Bad News for the College Green Plaza<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin City had planned to pedestrianise the College Green area from the TCD front to approx. where H&M and Starbucks are and turn this new City Centre Plaza into a public amenity. (An article is here.<\/a>) It would have been the first and only City Centre event space and in my opinion it is the perfect location for a PROPER Christmas Market in Dublin.<\/p>\n

But the planning authority, An Board Pleanala, was not in favour of it because it would have a negative effect on traffic and would cause unacceptable conflicts between cyclists and pedestrains.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the moment College Green can only be used by buses and taxis and getting taxis out of this area would – in my opinion – be a good thing.<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way: The only chance a Christmas Market has in Dublin if it a) is in a central location and b) is organised and run by Dublin City, NOT an event management company and definitely not by DublinTown.<\/a><\/p>\n

The next steps that Dublin City will take regarding this, have not been revealed yet.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

The National Museum and UCD Centre for Experimental Archaeology have begun a research project examining how early medieval metals were used to make beautiful objects. Using a range of different investigative techniques, a selection of artefacts from the Museum have been analysed, recreated and used for the first time in over 1,000 years. This talk will provide an initial overview of this research, what it hopes to achieve and present some of its initial results.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Music and Dance for Diwali” is a performance by Sougata Roy Chowdhury (Sarod) and Labonee Mohanta (Kathak). They will present two ancient art forms of North India: music and dance. While highlighting their individual styles, along with the percussive rhythms of tabla, they creatively compose and exchange in exciting dialogue with one another. Sougata conveys the essence and emotional expression of moods in the Indian classical system. Labonee dances fiery footwork and pirouettes, complex compositions, dynamism and grace in movement.<\/a><\/p>\n

The next “Thursday Late” in the National Gallery is entitled “Fright at the Museum”. It is an opportunity to enjoy the Gallery after hours and this month they will get you into the Halloween spirit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Candlelit Tales (18:30-19:30) will bring their live storytelling theatre show to the caf\u00e9. They will be presenting “The T\u00e1in”, a modern retelling of the greatest tale of Irish mythology with live musical score.<\/a><\/p>\n

Food writer Michelle Darmody will lead a Halloween cookie-decorating workshop in the Atrium from 17:00-19:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

Two free tours focusing on some of the darker works in the collection will happen at 17:30 and 18:30. Meet your guide at the Merrion Square desk.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tropical Popical will create Halloween inspired nail art in the Courtyard. (Bookings are free and go live at the link below at 14:00 on Monday. Don’t miss it!)<\/a><\/p>\n

DJ Dermot Kelly will be in the Courtyard too, spinning some “ghostly good tunes” until 20:00. Halloween-themed bites and beverages will be on sale in the caf\u00e9 and courtyard all evening until 20:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Part of the Weekend Never Dies” is a rock documentary following the worldwide concert tour of the Belgian band Soulwax.<\/a><\/p>\n

Director Saam Farahmand filmed Soulwax on their recent international tour dates, capturing all the excitement, chaos and humour of the world tour. Whereas the Beastie Boys filmed one gig with 50 cameras, Soulwax filmed 120 shows with one camera in Europe, Japan, the US, Latin America and Australia. Go Voting on Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, on the coming Friday (26 October) the presidential election is taking place in Ireland and you should go and cast your vote if you have one! Only if you are an Irish citizen you get to vote and I know that MANY Dublin Event Guide Readers are not citizens in Ireland, but the rest should definitely go and vote.<\/a><\/p>\n

You might ask WHY? Because in the end it will have absolutely no impact on your life (or anybody elses) or on Irish politics or on your wealth or wellbeing. Yes, indeed, voting for the Irish President is a bit of a waste of time as far as real life issues are concerned. BUT using your vote, whenever you have the opportunity, is – in my opinion – a sort of duty for everone who cares about democracy. There will be no repercussions if you don’t vote, so the “duty” element is just a “moral duty”, but nevertheless it is relevant to keep democracy alive\/working.<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, you will ALSO have a vote about a referendum on that Friday. The referendum will decide if the Blasphemy article will stay in the constitution or not. (Blasphemy is the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred things.) Total nonsense in a secular society that does not depend on any church (anymore). And in the Irish version, the Blasphemy article even only covers the Christian definitiion of a “God” and ignores all other religions. Even more a reason to get rid of this silly article from 1935.<\/a><\/div>\n
