In 590 weeks (or more than 11 years), this never happened, but next week is a first! The first time in all these 11 years, the Dublin Event Guide will be on holidays. I will be away on a training course from Wednesday until Saturday and I will have absolutely no time to write the Dublin Event Guide next week, so unfortunately you will have to do without for one week.<\/a><\/p>\n

That ALSO means that there won’t be the daily updates on the Facebook page after next Friday for one week, because I won’t know what to write about if I haven’t done my event research.<\/a><\/p>\n

Doughnut Madness in Blanchardstown<\/h2>\n
\n

Is there something wrong with people in the Blanchardstown area? Very recently a doughnut shop opened at Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, but oddly (for a doughnut shop) it has a drive-through counter and it did open as a 24 hours operation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Do people really NEED doughnuts are 03:30 in the night? Well, it seems like that! Cars were queueing for more than an hour to get their doughnuts in the middle of the night. And some weirdos thought it was fun to beep their car horns while waiting and keeping the neighbours wide awake.<\/a><\/p>\n

It was so extreme that it makes you wonder if it was all planned or arranged by the doughnut company. There is no evidence for that, but the fact that such a huge among of people have to have their doughnuts in the night is a bit suspicious.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems that on Wednesday, the doughnut company has agreed to change their opening times and close from 23:30 until 06:00 in the morning. That should help with the noise complaints, but I am not sure if makes the customers of doughnut shop Krispy Kreme any saner. :-O<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Dublin Theatre Festival is happening from 27 Sept until 14 October and there are not many, but a few free events happening under the “Festival+” headline. All events are free but ticketed, so check them out as soon as possible. They will get booked out!<\/a><\/p>\n

Lustre showcases beautiful pieces designed and made by the most recent graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Jewellery & Goldsmithing, work in gold, silver, platinum and gemstones. A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Faberg\u00e9-style eggs.<\/a><\/p>\n

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word \u2018flux\u2019 also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Simon Home Run is a 5 mile (8km) run starting near the Papal Cross and finishing at the entrance to the American Ambassadors Residence, which is also quite near the Papal Cross. The run is a fundraiser for the Simon Community and is therefore not free.<\/a><\/p>\n

But different to many other (non-free) runs, at this run, the Simon Community and Deutsche Bank are providing children’s entertainment with games and face painting and a magician and there is also an entertainment stage where the U-Band will play a gig. The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 24 September until 07 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 140 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

On this last weekend, there are lots of History talks in the Printworks Building (former Revenue Commission building) at the lower courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be 14 talks in total on Saturday and Sunday and the website below lists them all. Some talks require booking, but most of them don’t and even the ones that require booking MIGHT offer a limited number of walk-up tickets.<\/a><\/p>\n

The talks will be about the Great Wars in Ireland, History Research, Third Reich, Stalin’s War on Ukraine, Sing for Suffrage, Story of HMS Erebus, Irish Revolution, Russian Romanovs.<\/a><\/p>\n

Meet Lady Harriet and other fascinating Irish characters travelling and collecting antiquaries in Egypt during the 18th and 19th centuries.<\/a><\/p>\n

Using newly transcribed family letters and diary entries, along with sketches and paintings, this talk will trace her journey from Alexandria to the third Cataract. Sculpture in Context – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin City Hall has a museum\/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.<\/a><\/div>\n

The yearly Open House Dublin event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and it gives you an opportunity to visit buildings that you normally would never get access to on a guided tour that focuses on the architecture of the building and the reasons behind why it was build the way it is.<\/a><\/p>\n

Open House Dublin starts already on Friday with a small number of tours\/locations and the main days follow on Saturday and Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free to all buildings and a full list of participating venues can be found here: http:\/\/www.openhousedublin.com\/index.php\/listings<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the venues gave out tickets on a lottery basis only and the tickets are all given out now. Many other locations are running tours throughout the day and while you might have to queue for a little you will get in – unless you arrive too late in the day.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly recommend this event, it is really great to get a chance to explore some of Dublin’s (iconic) buildings and to hear why the architects did what they did.<\/a><\/div>\n

Budget Day is coming…on soft slippers!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Tuesday 09 Oct, the Budget for Ireland for 2019 will be announced. In previous years the media was whipping their readers into a frenzy about what will be increased and what will be decreased and lots of interest groups warned the government about the terrible consequences of the new budget unless they turn it around in time before Tuesday.<\/a><\/p>\n

But it seems to me that this year the Budget Day is coming on soft slippers. There seems to be a lot less noise about the announcement on Tuesday than in previous years. It could be that it is just my perception, but it also could be that it is quieter because everyone knows that we can’t excpect much (good) from the budget, but that it also won’t be tooo bad.<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, Cigarettes prices will most likely go up again. Not for health reasons, but just to get taxes.<\/a><\/p>\n

Petrol and Diesel prices will probably go up as well (and you should fill up your car before midnight on Tuesday if you want to avoid the price hike for the last time).<\/a><\/p>\n

The 9% VAT rate for the hopsitality sector (hotels and restaurants) will probably go up and that will have a definite bad effect on your pocket if you ever eat out! The restaurants will ALL increase their prices the moment the VAT increase takes effect and the increase will never be limited to the actual VAT increase, but will be generously rounded up. (A 2% increase of that VAT rate should increase a EUR 20 dinner only by 40 cent, but I bet most restaurants will addat least EUR 1 to the price!)<\/a><\/p>\n

Income tax might fall a bit, but the other tax increases will most likely eat all the savings so that you end up with just a handful of Euro more in your pocket.<\/a><\/p>\n

DIRT (Deposit Interest Retention Tax), that’s the tax on the interest you earn for your savings, will go down, but that is just part of a many year plan of reducing it, so nothing new. And the Property Tax might go down a tiny bit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Nothing overly exciting! Maybe that is the reason for the reduced media hype!?<\/a><\/div>\n
