Oh ohhhh! The “normal” Irish summer weather will be back this weekend. After such a long wonderful and warm time we shouldn’t complain, but it is the weather and it can take the abuse. ;-) The forecast says RAIN on Saturday and Sunday and max temperature on Saturday of just 16 degrees. Eeeek! On Sunday it will hopefully climb to 20 again.<\/a><\/p>\n

A pity for the many outdoor events that are planned for this weekend. But don’t let a bit of rain stop you: Get that umbrella or raincoat out again and enjoy what Dublin has to offer!<\/a><\/p>\n

On the donation front I am HAPPY today! The July bill has been paid in full, thanks to a generous donor who said he wanted to pay his yearly 12 Euro for a whole number of years in one go. THANK YOU! This week the main events are the Kite and Balloon Festival “Atmosphere 2018” in Dun Laoghaire on Saturday, then there is Bray Air Display on Saturday and Sunday (but go on Sunda you want to go!) and there is “Hotter Than July”, a world music festival on Smithfield Plaza on Saturday. Malahide Has It, a community festival in Malahaide is the final one on the list of top events. With weather and work in mind, I will probably only make it to “Hotter Than July” on Sunday, but I hope you will venture to more! :-)<\/a><\/div>\n

New Coastal Cyling Route announced<\/h2>\n
\n

The Journal.ie announced on Friday that Fingal County Council has announced that planning permission had been issued for a new coastal cycling route and pedestrian path linking Baldyole and Portmarnock.<\/a><\/p>\n

New shiny cycling paths are always good news because they benefit cyclists, pedestrians and car users and make life safer for everyone involved and when all is finished the new piece will allow a continuous link between Baldoyle and Malahaide. That’s even better news.<\/a><\/p>\n

But there is a shocking aspect to that great announcement: The price for that new piece is indicated as in the region of EUR 2.5 mio. Well, 2.5 mio is not too bad for a good piece of cycling path AND pedestrian path, but then I read the article again and discovered that the distance is “nearly 2km”. WOW! More than 1.25 mio per kilometer!?!?<\/a><\/p>\n

And then the Director for planning and strategic infrastructure at Fingal Council is quote with “The Baldoyle to Portmarnock route is the first phase of a major initiative to provide a Greenway along the entire coastline of Fingal.” The entire coastline of Fingal is 88km long, Does that mean they have EUR 110mio to spend on a cycling path? Or does it mean: It’s a great idea but it will never happen?<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the last weekend of the “Exhibiting Art In Georgian Ireland” exhibition at the Irish Georgian Society.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a world-class exhibition of eighteenth-century Irish paintings to mark the restoration of the City Assembly House and to commemorate the Society of Artists in Ireland who erected the building over 250 years ago.<\/a><\/p>\n

Celebrating the building\u2019s original incarnation as the first purpose-built public gallery in Britain and Ireland, the Exhibition will re-assemble works by Society of Artists members such as Thomas Roberts, Jonathan Fisher, James Forrester, Robert Carver, Robert Healy and Hugh Douglas Hamilton, including many pieces which were first displayed in the room in the series of exhibitions the Society held there between 1766 and 1780.<\/a><\/p>\n

Look Beyond is an exhibition of photographs taken by a group of 16 people who have had mental health difficulties. The exhibition was organised by See Change, the National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership and is an output of a research project conducted by Dr Maria Quinlan and Dr Et\u00e1in Quigley from University College Dublin and Maynooth University.<\/a><\/p>\n

Devonian Plant Fossils: A window into the past<\/h2>\n

This is a joint exhibition between the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, the Geological Survey Ireland and the Natural History Museum and it will show-case the 360 million year old fossils from Kiltorcan Quarry, Co. Kilkenny.<\/a><\/p>\n

Kiltorcan is internationally known for its rich assemblage of excavated fossils but this is their first significant public display. The fossils provide a glimpse into the plant world at the end of the Devonian Period.
The first significant adaptive radiation of life on dry land occurred during the Devonian Period. Free-sporing vascular plants began to spread across dry land, forming extensive forests which covered the continents. By the middle of the Devonian, several groups of plants had evolved leaves and true roots, and by the end of the period the first seed-bearing plants appeared.<\/p>\n

The exhibition can be viewed daily in the Gallery, Education & Visitor Centre. Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Malahide Has It Festival 2018 will take place from 27-29 July. There will be a Funfair, Face Painting, Balloon Modelling, Kids Treasure Hunt, Kids Storytelling, Historical Walk, Puppet Shows, Tai Chi, Tug o’ war, music and food and it will all take place on the Malahide Green and in New Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 14 July to 18 August 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. Atmosphere is a yearly kite, balloon and flight festival, but because it is happening on the same weekend as the Bray Air Display this year (Dohh!) no kites are allowed to fly at the kite festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

But don’t despair, there will still be kite and flight related events: expert kiters will teach workshops on kite aerodynamics and design and you can make your own kite.<\/a><\/p>\n

In the Balloon Zone there will be a Ballon Dome and a variety of Inflatables (Assault Run, Giant Slide, Climbing Wall) and professional balloon modellers will create all sorts of extravagant ballon models.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Flight Zone will feature a Planetarium where a 360degree 3D projection will let you enjoy the atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bark in the Park is a sponsored dog walk in Phoenix Park on Sunday. “Sponsored” means “not free”, but there is no specified or minimum amount that you have to pay and people that can’t afford it, will not be sent away. The money goes to the Irish Blue Cross, an animal charity. <\/a><\/p>\n

In addition to the 4km dog walk there are also dog classes, training demos, dog competitions with prizes and games.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Curator’s Tour of the current temporary “Print, Protest, and The Polls: The Irish women\u2019s suffrage campaign and the power of print media, 1908 \u2013 1918” exhibtition in the National Print Museum will take place at 14:30 on Saturday and on Sunday with Donna Gilligan.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition commemorates the centenary of the first female vote in Ireland through exploration of the use of print media by the Irish suffragists, and their opponents, in their methods of promotion and protest.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday the “Hotter Than July” world music festival is happening. It is a little ironic that it takes place AFTER the hot period in July and unfortunately some rain is forecasted for Sunday, BUT the temperatures are expected to reach 20 degrees, so don’t stay at home! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Hotter Than July will feature Irish and international music and is a family-friendly cultural diversity event. Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

She gathered eyewitness accounts of crimes against humanity committed in the second Chechen conflict and investigated torture, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions. No justice has been served yet in Natalia Estemirova’s case and her murder remains unsolved nine years after she was killed.<\/a><\/p>\n

Amnesty International will screen the film “Who killed Natacha?” by by the French journalist Mylene Sauloy. The film follows the investigation into the death of Natalia Estemirova, who was known to her friends as Natacha.<\/a><\/p>\n

“10 years of Graphene – Why the hype and what\u2019s next?” is a talk in the Science Gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2008, Professors Jonathan Coleman and Valeria Nicolosi, Investigators in AMBER and Trinity\u2019s Schools of Physics and Chemistry respectively, published a paper in Nature Nanotechnology describing a new method to produce defect-free graphene nanosheets. Graphene is a single atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms and has extraordinary properties from strength 200 times that of steel, to conductivity, permeability and flexibility. These developments have led to breakthroughs in a number of applications areas, notably energy storage devices and electronics.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out more about what graphene could enable, from sensors to replacing plastics. Professors Coleman and Nicolosi will each give a 20-minute public talk about their research at the conclusion of their 10th anniversary one-day academic workshop in Trinity. This talk does not require a background in science, it is for anybody with a curiosity about the materials of the future! There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience.<\/a><\/p>\n

Live is TOUGH when you are given the correct change!<\/strong><\/p>\n

OMG! What has our world come to? A gentleman was traveling on the DART from Lansdowne Road to Dun Laoghaire and he bought a ticket at the ticket machine. The ticket was EUR 2.70 and he had only a EUR 20 note. So he put the money in the machine and the machine gave him a ticket AND gave him the CORRECT amount of money back. But that didn’t please this gentleman and he had to make a video clip to complain about ….. the fact that the machine gave him the correct amount of money in COINS. What a HORRIBLE and UPSETTING experience!! :-O <\/p>\n

The gentlemen was not just anybody, no, it was Conor McGregor’s father and I guess that is one of the reasons why it got picked up by a number of people and then also made it into some media channels. Someone also grabbed the video and made it available for all of us on YouTube https:\/\/youtu.be\/hrq-2FFFcrc<\/a> so that we can have a laugh or a head-shake about the tough tough life that McGregor’s dad has to endure. <\/p>\n

Oh, you wonder WHY getting coins back was a problem? Well, didn’t you know that he wears a “slim-fit, hand-fitted, Hugo Boss suit”, so where in god’s name would he room for coins?? <\/p>\n

Life is sooooo tough for some!! <\/p>\n
