What a busy week again. Sooo many events and it is looking similarly busy next week as well! The weather gods did send the sunshine to other countries and I saw that for Germany a heatwave is predicted for next week. But while a heatwave in Ireland is 5 or more days above 25 degrees, for Germany a heatwave is 5 days above 30 degrees. Different standards! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

On the donation front it is STILL very serious! The July bill as reduced to EUR 125 through the help from some wonderful people, but there is only ONE week left in July. I really need to find that money before the end of the month. Ahh, the Festival of Curiosity. It is happening this week and it is a great festival. BUT after many years of at least SOME free events, it seems that this year every single event costs at least EUR 4. It is an extremely popular festival anyway so that most events are already booked out for a while, but it would have been nice to have at least one bigger outdoor event that is accessible for everyone and is free. (I am aware that there is a sort of sound installation at Wolfe Tone Square, but it is not recommended for children under 10 years of age (Why??) and I am not sure if there is that much to do at this installation.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Quays Festival from 19-23 July will take place in six venues along the Liffey. The venues are The Wiley Fox, The Grand Social, The Workman’s Club, Sin E, Liquor Rooms and the Sound House.<\/a><\/p>\n

There is no real common thread or link-up between the venues. They all do their own thing, but the common aspect of this Dublin Quays Festival is that all gigs are free and who could complain about that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. The Festival of Curiosity is happening this weekend and the only free event and also one of the very few events that don’t need tickets is the “Playground of Sound: Songs of the City and Sounds of the Sea” on Wolfe Tone Square.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a playful outdoor touch-reactive installation for adults. Touch the plants to conduct your own personal choir. Find a partner for the sea-saw to activate the sounds of the sea and hold hands with a friend on the twin-swing to compose the bird-song and hear the dawn chorus \u2013 together creating playful and unique songs of the city.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 14 July to 18 August 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Theatre Festival (DTF) is taking place from 27 Sept – 14 Oct 2018 and I heard that this Tuesday there will be 10 free tickets up for grabs in St. Stephen’s Green for one of the DTF shows. :-O <\/a><\/p>\n

Ten theatre seats will be placed somewhere in St Stephen\u2019s Green and the first 10 people sitting down on one of the seats will win a pair of tickets for a DTF show. The organisers tell us that the competition starts at 12:30 and you will have to enter the park via the gate under the arch opposite Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

I am not sure if there are any other rules or how it will be prevented that people who are already in the park will claim the seat first and it will also be interesting to see how possible mass interest could\/might be handled, but I’d say Theatre Festival goers are civilised people so that probably no issues will arise. ;-)<\/a><\/div>\n

Malahide Has It Festival 2018<\/h2>\n

It has a slightly odd name, but it is a free event and very popular, so we are not complaining. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

The Malahide Has It Festival 2018 will take place from 27-29 July. There will be a Funfair, Face Painting, Balloon Modelling, Kids Treasure Hunt, Kids Storytelling, Historical Walk, Puppet Shows, Tai Chi, Tug o’ war, music and food and it will all take place on the Malahide Green and in New Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, though, it is a bit of work to find a schedule of all the activities. The website for Malahide has no information at all and the Facebook Page below has no details (yet?) either. Let’s hope that this will change before Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission to the festival events is free.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin City Hall has a museum\/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.<\/a><\/div>\n

Enough of Brexit! Already! – Get on with it!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am an unapologetic supporter of the European idea. It makes 100% sense that smaller nations get together and form a bigger and more powerful union to deal with global challenges. But 51% in the UK thought differently and because of this small majority most politicians in Europe are occupied with that Brexit thing instead of with the solution of REAL problems and issues. In the UK it seems that NOTHING else is happening than discussions about and political resignations over Brexit.<\/a><\/p>\n

No, Brexit doesn’t make sense, neither on a global political level nor on a strategic level (together we are stronger), but older Brits outside of London seemingly thought that “Make Britain Great Again” would be a desirable goal and after months and months of reading about backstops and the Northern Irish border and idiots like Boris Johnson and the inability (even complete lack of attempt) of the pro-Brexit side in the UK to come up with a workable solution for a separation, I am getting fed up with that Brexit nonsense.<\/a><\/p>\n

Especially after reading the very pro-Brexit and totally anti-Ireland comments as a response to journalist Gaven Reilly’s Tweet on Thursday here https:\/\/twitter.com\/gavreilly\/status\/1019636060001918980<\/a> I thought that the best approach might be to just let them go quickly (or alternatively kick them out of the EU fast) and then let them see what mess it will cause. Just F off, Britain! :-S<\/p>\n

I do not believe that it will be a possibility to find a border-free scenario between Northern Ireland and Ireland that will be agreeable on all sides. Instead I think we will have to deal with the fact that – for a while at least – there will be a border again between the two countries as it was between other countries in Europe before the Schengen agreement. That is not ideal, but we just have to live with it. It shouldn’t be the biggest problem!<\/a><\/p>\n

Sure, there are lots more unresolved issues, but do we really want to give a Johnson and Rees-Moog so much power that they tell WHOLE Europe what we have to focus on? Just GO!<\/a><\/div>\n
