I had such a great weekend at the City Spectacular last week! So much fun and laughter and all in wonderful sunshine. I was happy out! :-) Last week’s Dublin Event Guide was out a good bit earlier than in previous week and I am working hard on keeping that “trend” up. \nThe Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is this week’s main event. It is a lot quieter than the City Spectacular but nevertheless very popular.<\/p>\n

But unfortunately it is July already and the outstanding amount for July is still EUR 180 and only half a month left. So I really need to find that money before the end of the month. More Water Restrictions<\/h2>\n

Irish Water has announced that from Monday there will be even more water restrictions. The next step after the “hosepipe ban” will be a restruction of pressure or shutting off of water during certain periods. And it has been indicated that the pressure might be reduced to a trickle trickle in some areas of Dublin, Wicklow, Meath and Kildare between 00:00 and 05:00.<\/p>\n

This is a strategy that is used during water shortages in winter and at that time the reasoning is that turning down the pressure when people leave intentionally the tap running to prevent the water pipe from freezing will stop all the water being wasted. It is not clear though what the reasoning is in the summer. Do people leave their tap running in the summer too?<\/p>\n

If that is not the case or not the driver, than what is it that will reduce water usage? If the washing machine can’t run in the night, people will just run it during the day. If the swimming pool can’t be filled from 00:00-05:00 then it will be filled between 05:00 and 00:00. I really can’t see how this measure will save a significant amount of water. ….UNLESS it is meant to safe water because the still unrepaired (!!) leaks in the public water supply will lose less. These leaks are a HUGE problem, but Irish Water seems incapable of fixing them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Leap Card – Kids Go Free<\/h2>\n

From Monday 02 July until Sunday 15 July, Child Leap Card holders can travel free on all Dublin Bus scheduled services (excluding Airlink and Nitelink), all Luas services, all DART services, all Commuter Rail services in Dublin\u2019s \u201cShort Hop Zone\u201d and Bus \u00c9ireann services where TFI Leap Card Validators are available.<\/p>\n

Child Leap Cards are available for Age 5-15 or Age 16-18 and for the “Kids GO Free” to work, the cards has to have at least 1 cent of Travel Credit.<\/p>\n

St. Anne’s Park in Raheny is the venue for the yearly Rose Festival on Saturday and Sunday. On a nice day, this is a great festival for the whole family. Don’t expect to see too many roses, I would expect that there peak blossoming time is already over, but the festival is still worth a visit.<\/p>\n

There will be stalls selling plants and gardening equipment, crafts, food and treats. Childrens’ entertainment, free horse and carriage rides, a library tent and mobile library, the Wooly Ward Petting Zoo, Big Bear Planetarium, a climbing tower, a living history display of weapons, a Tai Chi demonstration and the Big Dig Archaeology workshop will all be features of the festival. In the Red Stables is a Art & Craft Exhibition and on the music stage you will be able to listen from 12:00-17:30 to the following performers:<\/p>\n

Dysfunktional, Brian Boru, Dublin Bluegrass Collective, The Medine, Tropical Storm, The Rats Deppers, David Bowie Tribute Band. Unfortunately the timings are nor listed.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but parking on site will cost a fee (in 2017 it was EUR 3 per car).<\/p>\n

(The information Dublin City provides is – as it is unfortunately often the case – quite superficial and lacks a LOT of detail. Not event the fee for parking on site is mentioned. The downloadable PDF with a map is very big in size and very thin in details.)<\/p>\n

It would have been great if Dublin City had created a public viewing zone for the World Cup Final at 16:00 on Sunday, but unfortunately that opportunity was missed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/p>\n

Life at the Edges – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
\n+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
\n+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
\n+ Animals that travelled to space
\n+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
\n+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/p>\n

The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

St. Anne’s Park in Raheny is the venue for the yearly Rose Festival on Saturday and Sunday. On a nice day, this is a great festival for the whole family. Don’t expect to see too many roses, I would expect that there peak blossoming time is already over, but the festival is still worth a visit.<\/p>\n

There will be stalls selling plants and gardening equipment, crafts, food and treats. Childrens’ entertainment, free horse and carriage rides, a library tent and mobile library, the Wooly Ward Petting Zoo, Big Bear Planetarium, a climbing tower, a living history display of weapons, a Tai Chi demonstration and the Big Dig Archaeology workshop will all be features of the festival. In the Red Stables is a Art & Craft Exhibition and on the music stage you will be able to listen from 12:00-17:30 to the following performers:<\/p>\n

Dysfunktional, Brian Boru, Dublin Bluegrass Collective, The Medine, Tropical Storm, The Rats Deppers, David Bowie Tribute Band. Unfortunately the timings are nor listed.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but parking on site will cost a fee (in 2017 it was EUR 3 per car).<\/p>\n

(The information Dublin City provides is – as it is unfortunately often the case – quite superficial and lacks a LOT of detail. Not event the fee for parking on site is mentioned. The downloadable PDF with a map is very big in size and very thin in details.)<\/p>\n

It would have been great if Dublin City had created a public viewing zone for the World Cup Final at 16:00 on Sunday, but unfortunately that opportunity was missed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
\n+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
\n+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
\n+ Animals that travelled to space
\n+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
\n+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n

On 18 July 1918 Nelson Mandela was born, which means that this year we celebrate the Centenary of his birth.<\/p>\n

The organisation All Together in Dignity Ireland (www.atdireland.ie) and other community groups will celebrate this day, which also is the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with a ceremony at the Famine Statues from 17:30-18:30.<\/p>\n

Before that, from 12:00-19:00, a number of workshops will take place.<\/p>\n

From 11:00-19:00 ‘Make Poverty History’ quotes will be on display on the Liffey railings at Custom House Quay.
\nFrom 12:00-17:00 two free workshops will happen close to the Human Rights and Poverty Stone. The topics are “From Dublin to Mandela: Write your message to Mandela” and “Your Rights Are Written in Stone” about the Make Poverty History Message at the Custom House Quay monuments.<\/p>\n

The formal ceremony from 17:30 will be a symbolic “Long Walk to Freedom” from the Famine Statues to the Human Rights and Poverty Stone. The participants will be invited to walk together the 40 meters from the Statues to the Stone while singing some songs and listening to readings from Nelson Mandela’s book ‘A Long Walk to Freedom”. The event will end with the broadcast of Mandela’s “Make Poverty History” speech.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Quays Festival from 19-23 July will take place in six venues along the Liffey. The venues are The Wiley Fox, The Grand Social, The Workman’s Club, Sin E, Liquor Rooms and the Sound House.<\/p>\n

There is no real common thread or link-up between the venues. They all do their own thing, but the common aspect of this Dublin Quays Festival is that all gigs are free and who could complain about that.<\/p>\n

The Liberties Festival 2018 will take place from 18-22 July. Susie and the Story Shredder …a work in progress is a show\/workshop that will happen in a number of libraries in July. The event will be in Walkinstown Library at 10:30 and at 13:30.<\/p>\n

“All children\u2019s stories are banned in the Kingdom of Levitas. King Levi says they make your brain go fuzzy and your hands turn green. Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. The Dublin Quays Festival from 19-23 July will take place in six venues along the Liffey. The venues are The Wiley Fox, The Grand Social, The Workman’s Club, Sin E, Liquor Rooms and the Sound House.<\/p>\n

There is no real common thread or link-up between the venues. They all do their own thing, but the common aspect of this Dublin Quays Festival is that all gigs are free and who could complain about that.<\/p>\n

Machine Pistols everywhere – But different consequences!<\/strong><\/p>\n

There were two machine pistol-related articles in TheJournal.ie last week and there are two completely different consequences coming from the discovery of these guns.<\/p>\n

The first article on Wednesday<\/a> explained that a “member of the public” FOUND a fully-loaded submachine gun belonging to no other than the Garda Siochana. The gun was in a bag in the boot of an armed Garda unit car and it fell out of the car for currently still unknown reasons. The gun was luckily brought to Store Street Garda station and was handed in.<\/p>\n

As a consequence of the incident, “A senior Garda officer has been appointed to examine all the circumstances relating to an incident involving an armed unit in Dublin city centre today.”<\/p>\n

The second article on Friday<\/a> described that also on Wednesday a car was stopped in Drogheda and the driver of the car had a large amount of prescription tablets. She was arrested and during a follow-on search a machine pistol and a ammunition were found in a parked car in Drogheda.<\/p>\n

The consequence in this case is that the woman will be in court tomorrow and will be charged in connection with the discovery of the machine pistol.<\/p>\n

The two stories have nothing to do with each other. In one case it was seemingly a criminal and\/or dissident republican that had the gun and ammunition in the car to be used for illegal activities. In the other case it was the law enforcement authorities that had the pistol, but lost it.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, though, both sides have very similar weapons and I would always prefer that the law enforcers have better and a lot more weapons than the criminals. The other interesting aspect is that a large part of the Gardai (is it still the majority?) are not armed at all, while the criminals have machine pistols in their cars. Is that a good situation? Me thinks: NO!<\/p>\n

And the final aspect: Imagine that Garda machine pistol had been picked up by the “wrong” person. I’d say the Gardai didn’t even realise that it fell out of their car until MUCH later … with no idea where exactly it fell out. :-O Clearly machine pistols are popular in Ireland and finding one on the streets of Dublin is like winning the lottery for the right criminal.<\/p>\n

About the consequences: Clearly the Gardai were authorised to have the gun, but the loss of it will hopefully have some consequences for the careless Gardai. And the woman in Drogheda? I wouldn’t be surprised if she will be released again “and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution”. If that happens you really have to wonder what a stupid legal system we have in Ireland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
