Voluntary retirement age increased to 70<\/h2>\n
\n

A big change is afoot. On Thursday new legislation was agreed on by the Government that will allow all public servants to work until 70 if they want. Until now, public servants that were recruited before 2004 had a mandatory retirement age of 65 years of age. With our life expectancy continually going up and since active life should not be forced to end at the arbitrary age of 65, this change makes a lot of sense.<\/a><\/p>\n

People that want to retire at 65 can still do that, but the people that want to work longer are now allowed to.<\/a><\/p>\n

Public servants are all employees in the Civil Service (in government- and state-related roles), in Education, in the Health sector, in Justice and in Local Authorities. (The Defence Sector is also part of this group, but they have different retirement rules.)<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, there is a downside to that as well. Unsuitable employees could now stick around for 5 years longer. But they were probably already unsuitable before they were 65 and then it is not the fault of this upcoming law change.<\/a><\/p>\n

Leap Card – Kids Go Free<\/h2>\n

From Monday 02 July until Sunday 15 July, Child Leap Card holders can travel free on all Dublin Bus scheduled services (excluding Airlink and Nitelink), all Luas services, all DART services, all Commuter Rail services in Dublin\u2019s \u201cShort Hop Zone\u201d and Bus \u00c9ireann services where TFI Leap Card Validators are available.<\/a><\/p>\n

Child Leap Cards are available for Age 5-15 or Age 16-18 and for the “Kids GO Free” to work, the cards has to have at least 1 cent of Travel Credit.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour. <\/a><\/div>\n

The best event of the year is back this weekend! It is the City Spectacular (sponsored by Laya Healthcare) from Friday until Sunday in Merrion Square (some still remember it under the previous name, which was Street Performance World Championship) and the weather will be perfect for it!<\/p>\n

I LOVE the City Spectacular and will be there again on Saturday and Sunday and I would strongly recommend that you gather the whole family and come to Merrion Square from 12:00-19:30 on Saturday and Sunday<\/p>\n

There will be lots of street performers showing their skills from juggling via magic to acrobatics in 30-40 minute shows. Admission is free, but you reward the performers directly by putting money into their hat.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Street Performance there will be plenty of other activities for grown ups and kids (incl. Story Telling, Laughter Yoga, Kids Entertainment, Rugby Skills Session, a Sing Along Social, Family Zumba, Afro Dancing & Drumming, Fitness Classes) and to make sure that you won’t starve, a big Food Village.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event commemorates everybody who lost their lives in the two World Wars, in particular the estimated 60,000 Irish men and women from all parts of the Ireland who served and died in these conflicts.<\/a><\/p>\n

The ceremony will commence at 12:30 pm with a parade of the standards of Royal British Legion, regimental, ex-services organisations and commemorative associations. This is followed by an ecumenical service of remembrance, recitals and music and the laying of official wreaths by government and civic leaders, members of the Diplomatic Corps and Service and veterans representatives. Music will be provided by the combined bands of the Irish Defence Forces and the Royal Irish Regiment.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free but registration is required via the website below where also a lot of details and rules for the attendance are provided. It seems that registration is possible until 10:00 on Saturday morning, but the termination of ticket “sales” could change.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Green Door Market is an indoor food\/Farmer’s Market that many know from when it was located at Newmarket Square. Due to the redevelopment at Newmarket Square it had to move and is now on the Old Naas Road, opposite the entrance to the Royal Liver Retail Park. The best event of the year is back this weekend! It is the City Spectacular (sponsored by Laya Healthcare) from Friday until Sunday in Merrion Square (some still remember it under the previous name, which was Street Performance World Championship) and the weather will be perfect for it!<\/p>\n

I LOVE the City Spectacular and will be there again on Saturday and Sunday and I would strongly recommend that you gather the whole family and come to Merrion Square from 12:00-19:30 on Saturday and Sunday<\/p>\n

There will be lots of street performers showing their skills from juggling via magic to acrobatics in 30-40 minute shows. Admission is free, but you reward the performers directly by putting money into their hat.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Street Performance there will be plenty of other activities for grown ups and kids (incl. Story Telling, Laughter Yoga, Kids Entertainment, Rugby Skills Session, a Sing Along Social, Family Zumba, Afro Dancing & Drumming, Fitness Classes) and to make sure that you won’t starve, a big Food Village.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Amalgam in Tooth fillings: Harmless but DON’T use it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week a number of media outlets reported that EU had brought in a law that outlawed the use of Dental Amalgam for fillings for children under 15 and pregnant or breast feeding women. The law is from 2017 already, but it came into effect only on 01 July.<\/a><\/p>\n

So what is Amalgam? Amalgam is compound for tooth fillings that contains Mercury. Mercury is highly toxic but for some odd reason it is allegedly harmless when in your mouth.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Irish Times wrote in an article<\/a> “Mercury is the only liquid metal and, while safe when used in dentistry, has been associated with incidents of poisoning, as in the Bay of Minamata in Japan where, in the 1950s and 1960s, a disfiguring disease was identified to be associated with industrial-scale mercury poisoning.”<\/p>\n

So it’s safe, but causes poisoning!? How does that make sense?<\/a><\/p>\n

The Irish Times continued and claimed that the change was part of the Government’s adherence to the Minamata Convention, a United Nations agreement dating from 2013, which aims to protect human health and the environment by reducing, or eliminating altogether, the use of the chemical element mercury.<\/a><\/p>\n

But it might not surprise you that the Irish Government delayed the change until the very last moment and that it only did so because of a EU law change.<\/a><\/p>\n

Interestingly Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany have banned or restricted use of amalgam already in 2011. But the Irish Government thought it was appropriate to allow the use for another 7 years! SEVEN!<\/a><\/p>\n

Now why is this change happening? After all the Health Service Executive in Ireland said that the Amalgam compound was “a safe, reliable and durable filling material, and has been used successfully for over 100 years”. So something safe and perfect will be banned? Isn’t that odd? Bans are normally reserved for dangerous things, no?<\/a><\/p>\n

Well, interestingly if you are older than 15 or not pregnant, you can currently still get Amalgam fillings DESPITE the fact that many other countries saw the need to ban it.<\/a><\/p>\n

So is it dangerous or not? Dentists and Health Service Executive tell us that it is safe, but how could they not do that. It would imply that they were lying all along. The ban for children and pregnant women is a clear admission that it is NOT safe.<\/a><\/p>\n

DON’T use it and tell your dentist that you do NOT want any Amalgam fillings added!<\/a><\/p>\n
