I know it is already long gone and the weather since hasn’t been great, but last weekend was really nice, wasn’t it? If you miss the sun, just remember how you enjoyed it last week and realise that there will be more days like that again. When? Hmmm, ok, you DO realise that you are in Ireland, don’t you? :-P

I didn’t see much of the sun last week because I was inside of the D4 Hotel for three (in my case actually four) days at the “Breakthrough to Success” seminars. Some of you did come to the seminar. Some I met, others I knew about but because I don’t know you personally, I wasn’t able to identify you among the 400 people. I have no exact idea how many people from the Dublin Event Guide Community were there, but – to be honest – I had hoped for more. I had a great time there and met a huge amount of really nice people. Despite the fact that I was at the same event a number of times by now, I still get something out of it and definitely recommend it. A new date has not been set yet, but I expect that it will be back in about 6 months or so in case you are interested and missed it this time. http://www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324

This week’s Event Guide will reach you later than I would prefer, but last night – just when I settled down and started working on it – my day job called me to duty because we had a problem with a connection to a customer (my day job is in telecommunications). So I had to work for another 3 hours or so, which then has a ripple effect in the morning and delays the completion of this newsletter. Apologies if it didn’t make it in time for your usual read. I hope you will forgive me. ;-)

For this week’s “Feel Good” Slot, I came across a You Tube video about Gratitude. Gratitude is thankfulness or appreciation for positive things that happen to you. You think it is a little odd to think that the “attitude of gratitude” could make you feel better? Well, there are even studies that show that gratitude can enhance your emotional wellbeing! Try it out! For the coming week start your day by saying thanks to your creator/god/the universe for something good that happened the day before or will happen that day and if you don’t feel better by the end of the week, you will get your money back. ;-) have a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jF6u4GJQ-U

Last week I said that it seemed to me that the Oktoberfest on George’s Dock was not taking place this year and I am happy to say that I was wrong http://www.oktoberfest-dublin.com/index.htm! Thanks to Petra L and Miriam A. In addition I mentioned the Festival of World Food which took place in Marlay Park last year and Petra L is telling me that it unfortunately got cancelled. It was planned for 03+04 October and it is not on the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown events list anymore. I can’t find a press release or similar anywhere that states that it is cancelled, but Petra works in the food business and therefore obviously found out first.

Please keep spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): http://www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
http://www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
[ad]
————-
Thanks to Louis M and Gerard Ph. who helped this week with a donation. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
iHERB.COM – HERBAL, AROMATHERAPY, HEALTH PRODUCTS
iHerb.com, one of the largest online stores for herbal products, cosmetics, aromatherapy and naturopathy, including Vitamin supplements etc is currently offering a significantly reduced International Shipping Rate to Europe. (The class was booked out within 2 days from announcing it. :-O) After that I plan to go to the BizCamp Dublin to listen to some talks and later we will sing at a wedding with the Graceland Gospel Choir in Leixlip. Then back to Dublin and either a bit more of BizCamp or of the Krav Maga class.

On Sunday I can take it easy and I am looking forward to it!! In the evening I will be back at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass and that should be good too.

On Monday the Climate Change Wake-up Call and the Bluegrass gig sound interesting. Surprisingly all went to plan and even the vandals have delivered what they were expected by damaging the first few bikes. But seriously, it seems it is a great success and the bikes are getting around. If you are a Dublin Bikes subscriber and would like to know where there are bikes available, you can go to http://dublinbikes.mobi to see exactly how many bikes are at which location. If you have not subscribed yet, you can do that on www.dublinbikes.ie

LUAS VS DUBLIN BUS – ACCIDENT
Most likely you have heard about this first and quite serious collision between a Luas and a Bus. Spookily (at some point) the story went that it happened on the 16th, involved the No. 16 bus and there were 16 people injured. But in the meantime the number of injured people grew to 21. It is not clear who’s fault it was, but it seems that one of the two went through a red light … and CIE says it was not the bus driver. Here is more about the accident http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0917/luas.html , but the reason for mentioning it in this category is because I found some interesting pictures here http://unreal.ie/forum/thread/5068

DUBLIN NEWS REEL – VIDEO NEWS FROM LAST WEEK
Nick Carosello is doing a great job reporting back from the different events that take place throughout Dublin.
Last week it was a video of the Smithfield Horse Market. My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. So, it is an event with a lot of subevents. ;-) Let me quote the explanation from the Mind the Gap team: “Over the course of two months the group have explored areas across Dublin city considering how we can re-imagine our civic society. Throughout Absolut Fringe we will present a range of interventions that will inform and delight. The project is based at thisisnotashop on Benburb Street Dublin 7 where you can get information and contribute to our exhibition of ideas for the city.
# 18 Sept at 18:30: Operetta – A lone performer looks out over the city and sings a lament to its citizens. Mind The Gap presents a solo operatic performance on
Foster Place of arias that highlight the current plight of the city and its uncertain future.
# 19 Sept at 08:00-11:00 Don’t Quote Me – Projected on the outside of the iconic Screen cinema, Mind The Gap looks to the silver screen to investigate Dublin’s current dilemmas. The city, planning, corruption, and the fall of a nation are explored through the history of cinema.
# 19 Sept at 12:00-15:00: Flower Show – Following from the tradition of competitive window box competitions in the Smithfield area, Mind The Gap offer you the chance to come to Smithfield Plaza and design your own flower box display to be adjudicated
by Lord Ross of Birr Castle, Father to Lord Oxmantown. Take this opportunity to bring plant life to the plaza.
# 20 Sept at 15:00: The Big Freeze – Goethe famously said “architecture is frozen music.” Taking inspiration from the architecture of Smithfield Plaza, a brass band will perform The Ride of The Valkyries by Wagner. This collaborative performance highlights the peaks and troughs of Smithfield Square as a public space.
# Ongoing event/installation: Public Seating – Mind the Gap will provide alternative public seating in the city for visitors and commuters over the course of
Absolut Fringe. Inspired by the urban myth that Santiago Calatrava designed the James Joyce bridge on the back of a napkin, we invite you, the viewer, to present your ideas for the city of an ever-expanding array of napkins. The gallery will also host The Smithfield Archive presenting the history of the area and unrealised proposals for its regeneration.
A complete list of all events AND some possible surprise events will be listed here: www.Mindthegapdublincity.blogspot.com

FAMILY & ADULT EVENTS – NATIONAL MUSEUM
# Adult Gallery Talk: Bringing the Dead Zoo to Life Sat 19 Sept from 12:00-12:30 in Collins Barracks: http://www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=530
# To find out more about Ice Age Animals you hva to come on Sat from 14:00-16:00 to “Inspectorium: Glacial Caps” in Collins Barracks. http://www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=563

NATIONAL GALLERY PROGRAMME
On Sat 19 Sept at 14:00 a Tour to the Highlights of the Collection takes place and at 15:00 the Family Programme looks at “Reflections” with Aoife Dwyer. (Avaaz means “voice” in many languages.) Avaaz receives no money from governments or corporations, and is staffed by a global team based in Ottawa, London, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Buenos Aires, and Geneva. On Mon 21 Sept, Avaaz is asking you to make your opinion known about climate change by going out and taking part in a giant worldwide flash-mob. A flash-mob is a fun, peaceful demonstration in which participants assemble suddenly in a public place, blending in with the crowd, perform an unusual action simultaneously for a few minutes, and then quickly disperse. They will be mostly self-organising, so should be easy for everyone involved.
The default time for the wake-up events will be 12:18 on 21 Sept, standing for the 18th day of the 12th month (the final day of the vital UN climate conference in Copenhagen, the deadline for a new climate treaty). Thousands of simultaneous climate wake-up call flash mobs are intended to focus global attention on the climate crisis.
In Dublin the meeting time is the suggested time of 12:18 and the location the North Earl Street junction with O’Connell St, Dublin, that is near the spire and at or close to the James Joyce statue. But apart from the launch of the Dublin Bikes scheme, which was seemingly (and unnecessarily) delayed to coincide with the Mobility Week most of us have not felt any difference, I guess. Now, on Car Free Day (Tues 22 Sept) suddenly all activities will be let loose: On Tues 22 Sept Merrion Square West will be closed to traffic from 19:00-19:00 and “a number of events will take place throughout the day in Merrion Square to increase awareness of non-motorised means of transport”. Also on Tues 22 Sept, from 08:00-18:00 a section of the Old Blessington Rd in Tallaght will be closed at the junction with Belgard Square East to facilitate events in conjunction with European Mobility Week.
You would like to know what exactly is taking place on Merrion Square? Well, wouldn’t we all like to know that!?!? But you forgot that it is Dublin City organising the event! This means that it will be well organised – by an external event management company – but nobody is allowed to find out about it. Grrrr! Do I sound frustrated? I AM!
At least South Dublin County Council (Tallaght) know how to let people know: http://roads.southdublin.ie/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=299&Itemid=62 but it just makes it even more shocking that Dublin County Council can’t get their act together.

EYP – TWEET MY WORLD
EYP (European Young Professionals) is inviting to an event where you can learn everything about Twitter. On Tues 22 Sept from 19:30-22:30, the Royal SAS Hotel in Golden Lane, Dublin 8 is the location where you will be taught in 3 workshops all you need to know. I have to admit that Twitter is so trivial that I don’t understand why people don’t just try it out. You can’t do much wrong! But if you prefer to be taken by the hand and instructed on your path, then the workshops “Tweet-my-friends”, “Tweet-my-job” and “Tweet-my-company” will tell you all the tricks and inside knowledge. And as usual the EYP event is free. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=130085272170

OPEN MIC WITH THE LAST TYCOONS – O’DOONOGHUES
Mark K tells me that on a Tuesday the the band The Last Tycoons do an Open Mic night in O’Donoghues on Suffolk Street, it’s free and anyone can get up, sing a song or do whatever they like. http://www.facebook.com/pages/ODonoghues-Open-Mic/71834618844

REGULAR TUESDAY EVENTS
* In the Bankers Inn on Trinity Street (off Dame Street) at 21:30: An acoustic singer-songwriter session hosted by Dave Murphy. Why on that day is not totally clear to me. I guess it is the 250th anniversary of Arthur Guinness starting his business, but what happened on 24 Sept 1759 is not completely clear to me. I am not impressed with the Guinness’ marketing stunts, by the way. But their marketing seems to work, and after tall they are in the business to make money. But collecting signatures as a condition to give a donation to a charity? The signatures did do nothing and Guinness doesn’t need my signature to give money to their own charity, so I don’t get it! You were meant to believe that your signature is important, but to me that is nearly a condescending way of treating customers. Then the campaign on facebook to have Arthur’s Day as a public holiday. It smells a lot like a marketing stunt, don’t you think?! And “Arthur’s Day” itself isn’t as impressive as I was hoping it would be when I heard first about it. Yes, concerts are a good thing and lots of them will take place on 24 Sept, but considering how much money people leave with Guinness every day, it would have been great if Guinness would have given something back to the customers by providing a free big gig. Instead all concerts cost money. A bit disappointing, I think. The only consolation is that the concerts at least seem somewhat discounted!

OPEN MIC NIGHT – LUCAN COUNTY BAR
Ian Smith, a talented guitar player and friend of mine, is in the process of setting up a new Open Mic event in the West of Dublin. Admission is free and there are spot prizes for participants. All types of music welcome and both musicians and listeners are very much invited to come along/participate. And there is a taxi company in the building, in case you had a few drinks. ;-) http://www.lucanspahotel.ie/ENG/map.html

REGULAR THURSDAY EVENTS:
* The Bionic Rats play live Reggae and Ska every Thursday in Turk’s Head from 22:00. From 17:00 until late (some locations are open until midnight!) there are hundreds of different events and places to visit. It is a Museum Night combined with lots more. If you are anywhere near Dublin, I strongly recommend that you have a look at the programme on www.culturenight.ie to see what interests you. You can download the full programme here http://culturenight.ie/docs/Programme2009.pdf or check on the website to see what is happening in the different parts of the City Centre. I will definitely make the most of this night.
I would recommend that you particularly pick locations to visit that are normally not free because the rest you can see at any time throughout the year, but the non-free ones you might not see otherwise. Don’t forget either to check pages 40-43 in the full programme!

CULTURE NIGHT: FOAM PARTY
The Science Gallery is inviting to a Foam Party during Culture Night to coincide with their Bubble Exhibition and they are inviting here: “We’ve got bubbles!
