Since Thursday we are now with two legs in Summer. First with the meteorological leg on 01 June and since 21 June also with the astronomical leg after summer solstice. The weather is already nice and there are indications that next week will be even nicer. A Burger Bun shortage (and probably also a burger and sausage shortage combined with a bottled water shortage in Lidl and Aldi) is expected for this weekend and possibly next week. Tickets to see the Pope<\/h2>\n

If Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland is something that you want to experience, then Monday is an important day. From Monday the free tickets for the mass in Phoenix Park and the Angelus prayer in Knock can be booked. The Phoenix Park mass has a capacity of 500,000 and for the event in Knock approx 45,000 tickets will be available.<\/a><\/p>\n

The tickets will be available via the website for the World Meeting of Families: https:\/\/www.worldmeeting2018.ie\/en\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets to the World Meeting of Families (not free!!) are also available via that website, so make sure that you look for the free tickets to the mass, if that’s what you want and NOT for the tickets for the World Meeting of Families.<\/a><\/p>\n

When you have booked, the tickets are seemingly not transferable and you need to PRINT your tickets to get in. The mass in Dublin is on 26 August at 15:00, but make no other plans for the day. You will probably have to be there hours before the start of the mass.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Flavours of Fingal is a two-day event at Newbridge House that is a combination of a food festival, family event and agricultural show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Vintage Vehicles and a Stage with music performances and a magician are other features. In addition there will be a kids zone with bouncy castles, face painting, archaeological digs, cycle obstacle courses, kids golf and more. And there are sheepdog trials, vintage farming exhibits, a petting zoo and animal competitions.<\/a><\/p>\n

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2087″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

A great opportunity for 8 to 12 year olds to learn traditional drumming from around the world and traditional Native American games and sports.<\/a><\/p>\n

Somewhere between hurling and lacrosse, Native American Stickball is the oldest sport in North America. Written records exist of it in the 17th Century. Ace Greenwood from the Chickasaw tribe in Oklahoma will visit schools in the Cabra and Finglas areas and talk to children about Native American culture and song and give them a chance to try out stickball for themselves.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition, The Big Bang Festival of Rhythm and Dublin Circus Project will organise some of Ireland’s top drumming workshop facilitators and circus performers to work with local schools in the run up to June 23rd, introducing children to different drumming traditions from around the world.<\/a><\/p>\n

All are welcome to drop in! Children and young people of all ages are welcome to take part in drumming and circus activities, but please note stickball is limited to 8 to12 year old participants.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Farmer’s Market will run for another day at Pender’s Lane from 10:00-17:00 and there will be a treasure trail. More tours will take place, a pipe band will play, a soccer tournament will happen, Zumba on the Street, Children’s Entertainment, Jazz music, the Garda band, a Ceili, Science workshops, a Tea party, Trad music and lots more will be part of the festival. At 14:00 the neighbour from Aras an Uachtarain, Michael D. Higgins, will pop over to show his face. <\/a><\/p>\n

It is a VERY busy festival with a huge amount of diversity. Great to see that community’s come together to create such great events! Nearly all events are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies<\/p>\n

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery\u2019s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.<\/a><\/div>\n

Less obesity but lots more strokes and dementia!? Thanks, Leo!

So, our wonderful politicians, led by former doctor and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar decided that they have to protect us from ourselves and force us to be healthier by introducing the Sugar Tax (correctly: Sugar Sweetened Drinks Tax). The Irish Heart Foundation and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland also supported the tax and claimed it will be a significant step in the fight against obesity.<\/a><\/p>\n

The goal is to move people away from drinks that contain sugar and while there is the alternative of just drinking water, the probability is HUGE that people will move to diet drinks if they want to avoid paying the significant surcharge on drinks that contain sugar. Drinks containing between five and eight grams of sugar have experienced a price increase of 20 cent per litre and drinks with more than eight grams of sugar per 100 ml cost now even 30 cent more per litre.<\/a><\/p>\n

All this to FORCE us to be healthier!<\/a><\/p>\n

But did Leo Varadkar, the Irish Heart Foundation and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland really do their homework? Does avoiding sugar definitely make us healthier?<\/a><\/p>\n

Interestingly there is a study that was published by the American Heart Foundation in April 2017, that indicates that our politicians and the two health-sector organisations mentioned above, probably did something really really bad to the people in Ireland!<\/a><\/p>\n

The study<\/a> looked at 2888 people for stroke and 1484 people for dementia and checked if sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened drink consumption had any impact on the risk of suffering a stroke or getting dementia.<\/p>\n

And they found that artificially sweetened soft drink consumption was associated with a higher risk of stroke and dementia, while sugar-sweetened beverages were not associated with stroke or dementia!! :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

So if thanks to Leo and his boys you moved from sugar sweetened drinks to artificially sweetened drinks to save some money, you might not die of obesity, but you are much more likely to die of or at least suffer of a stroke OR lose your mind!<\/a><\/p>\n

In other words: Adults who had one or more diet drinks a day were 2.9 times more likely to develop dementia and 3 times more at risk of suffering a stroke compared to people who didn’t drink diet drinks. And drinking diet drinks is far worse than drinking drinks sweetened with sugar.<\/a><\/p>\n
