After two super busy weekends, this one is a little quieter. Still lots of events, but some less than for the last two weeks. Thank goodness, some will say! :-) This week the National Gallery events are missing in this Dublin Event Guide because they misconfigured their website and it was unreachable. Oddly, the Science Gallery website was also not working properly and the Botanic Gardens website was changed and is now a total mess. People want to make my life difficult it seems. ;-) <\/a><\/p>\n

On the donation front we made a tiny bit of progress. The bill for June is now down to EUR 195. That is still a LOT of money to find in the next 2 weeks, so I really really need your help! Bloomsday!?!?! What is that? <\/h2>\n
\n

You either love it or you don’t care at all about Bloomsday, there seems to be nothing in between. It is a HUGE day for some and others don’t even know what it is about. If you belong to the latter group, let me help you a bit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bloomsday is a made up day and nothing of it is based on real events. James Joyce wrote the book Ulysses between 1914 and 1922 and the book describes one day, Thursday 16 June 1904 when Leopold Bloom, a fictional figure in the book, went about his business from 08:00 to the early hours of the next day. This invented day, lived by an invented person became Bloomsday.<\/a><\/p>\n

You could compare it to McClane Day! Which doesn’t exist!!! But would be the day just before Christmas when we copy all the things that John McClane did in Die Hard. We go to Nakatomi Plaza for a Christmas Party, have a disagreement in the toilet and then spend the rest of the day to fight against Max Gruber and some terrorists\/thieves with all sorts of weapons. So if McClane Day makes sense to you, then Bloomsday will also make sense.<\/a><\/p>\n

The James Joyce fans dress up like characters from the book in clothes that were worn by people around 1904, then they have a breakfast like Leopold Bloom and visit the locations he went to during the day.<\/a><\/p>\n

Library fines will be abolished<\/h2>\n
\n

Libraries in Ireland are a great resource that could be used a lot more, but if they are used more or not will probably have no impact on society or the economy or the happiness of the nation whatsoever. Reading books is a good thing but there are many ways you can read books and you can get your books. In my opinion the E-Book and Audio book selection has to be expanded significantly and the libraries should allow the users to suggest specific e- and audiobooks for purchase, but apart from that there is not much that needs to change.<\/a><\/p>\n

Michael Ring, Minister for Rural & Community Development, seems to think differently and I have to speculate that it comes from having nothing else to do in his department. Ring thinks that operating hours for libraries should be extended to 08:00-22:00 on 365 days a year (Who wants to be in a library at 21:00 on Christmas Eve!?!?) and he things that library fines have to go! At the moment the use of libraries is completely free and ONLY if you keep a physical book longer than the allowed loan period of three weeks (I think!) you have to pay a small, but increasing fine when you bring the book back. The purpose of the fine is to make sure that people bring the book back in time. But Ring thinks that it keeps people away from libraries.<\/a><\/p>\n

In an ideal world nobody will steal and everybody will love thy neighbours. But unfortunately the world is not ideal. That’s why we have laws. And in the same way as there will always be people (inlcuding politicians) that will try to “minimise” their tax payments, there will always people that will forget to bring back some or all of their loaned books.<\/a><\/p>\n

I think we should abolish library fines when we abolish fines for under declaring taxes.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ring thinks people will bring books back even if there are no fines because the libraries are owned by the communities: Ring thinks people will still return books even if there is no fine.<\/a><\/p>\n

He said: “I think people will respect the libraries because as I say it is not Government it is community, it is belonging to the people and we want to make these community hubs for the future.”<\/a><\/p>\n

“Ireland\u2019s Great Hunger Museum” at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, is sending its art collection to Ireland for the first time. The exhibition documents the scale of the famine, the horror of it, how it permeated and changed Ireland and the people that escaped it forever. The museum\u2019s collection, the only one of its kind in the world, constitutes an incomparable direct link to the past of almost 6.5 million Irish and 40 million Irish-American people.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bloomsday Events at James Joyce Tower and Museum<\/h2>\n

Bloomsday is around the corner again. The James Joyce inspired day that causes major palpitations for Joyce fans and doesn’t move the rest in the slightest. The festival runs from Monday 11 June – Saturday 16 June with the main Bloomsday on Saturday 16 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are plenty of events happening during the week, but nearly all of them are not free, some even quite pricey. Maybe that is an indication about the affluence of the audience that is Bloomsday mad?<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily there is one glorious exception! The James Joyce Museum in the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove will have a whole range events that are all free of charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

After a whole week of events, the final day and main day will look like this:<\/a><\/p>\n

The Tower opens at 08:00 for a day of Bloomsday festivities. Actor Bryan Murray reads excerpts from Ulysses at intervals over the morning and early afternoon, with occasional performances by Caitriona Ni Threaisaigh and Mary Pat Moloney and traditional contributions by Joycean pilgrims and the visiting public throughout the day.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be Bike Tune Ups, Bling UR Bike decorations, Cycling Information, Food and Smoothies made by a pedal powered Smoothie maker. \u201cCycle Circus\u201d performers and Street Entertainers will alos be present. <\/a><\/p>\n

The highlight of BikeFest will be a unique cycle stunt show from Ben Savage’s Savage Skills. Savage Skills riders have set Guinness World Records and won World Championships with their unrivalled abilities on two wheels. They will present four shows, on the half hour of 20 minutes duration during the event. Between shows Savage Skills riders will teach visitors safe cycling skills on their custom BMX track.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The title above is one I invented. It doesn’t fully describe the event, but the official title is “Freedom Machine Bike to the Bikefest!” and that tells you even less unless you understand what is going on.<\/a><\/p>\n

Freedom Machines were the bikes and the cycle is going from the Sails Sculpture on Clontarf Seafront at Alfie Byrne Road to St. Anne’s Park. So it is a super short cycle, but it is a cycle of a group of women to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the right to vote for women.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday, however, all genders and all ages are invited to join the women on the cycle to the Bike Fest in St. Anne’s Park, so everybody is welcome.<\/a><\/p>\n

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery\u2019s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dogs Trust Ireland is asking restaurants, hotels, workplaces, public transport and anything in between to allow dogs access their premises on this one day to make Ireland more dog friendly.<\/a><\/p>\n

And dog owners are encouraged to visit the premises that support “Dog Friendly Ireland Day” together with their dog.<\/a><\/p>\n

Oddly, though Dogs Trust Ireland missed an important aspect of this day: It is necessary to provide a comprehensive list that mentions all locations across Ireland where dogs are allowed in on that day. It seems that Dogs Trust had the right idea and participating premises could register and would get a Goody Bag with posters, treats and tips. But when they ran out of Goody Bags, they made the mistake to stop registration. Oops! And even the ones that managed to register are not listed on the website. Double Oops!<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin City Hall has a museum\/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2018″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

Don’t get sick in Ireland!! – Disastrous Irish Health System
<\/strong><\/p>\n

What a shocker! RTE News told us<\/a> Thursday that the number of people in Ireland who are on waiting lists to be treated or seen by a doctor has grown to a shocking number of over 707,000. This is an unbelievably huge number. 15% of the population of Ireland is waiting!! FIFTEEN percent!!<\/p>\n

According to the Euro Health Consumer Index from 2017, the number of Irish patients waiting for surgery or an outpatient appointment is “abysmal”. They have concluded that Ireland has the WORST hospital waiting list in Europe.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is not totally clear how RTE arrived at this number, but there is an Outpatient waiting list of 511,000 and an Inpatient waiting list of 78,000. There is planned procedure waiting list of 12,000 as well and adding all these up comes to around 600,000. so there are still 100,000 missing. But even if the waiting list was ONLY 600,000, that is still more than 12.5% of the population in Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n
