Bloomsday is around the corner again. The James Joyce inspired day that causes major palpitations for Joyce fans and doesn’t move the rest in the slightest. The festival runs from Monday 11 June – Saturday 16 June with the main Bloomsday on Saturday 16 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are plenty of events happening during the week, but nearly all of them are not free, some even quite pricey. Maybe that is an indication about the affluence of the audience that is Bloomsday mad?<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily there is one glorious exception! The James Joyce Museum in the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove will have a whole range events that are all free of charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

100 years ago on 09 June 1918, thousands of women marched to Dublin City Hall and other important buildings throughout Ireland to sign a pledge condemning conscription. The day was called L\u00e1 na mBan (Woman’s Day). <\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday, the National Library commemorates this day from 14:30-16:00. The iconic Reading Room will be open where we will have digitized photographs, posters and much more on display.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

It got a lot quieter around Street Feast than in previous years, but it is happening again in 2018! And the website claims that in the Greater Dublin area there will be 414 events. That is a LOT! :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

Street Feast is a neighbourhood festival organised by YOU and your neighbours. The idea is that you meet up with friends and neighbours and organise a lunch\/feast\/event on Sunday in your local street, in a garden or a park.<\/a><\/p>\n

You don’t need to tell anyone, but if you are neighbourly and are happy for other people to come to your event, you can post it on the Street Feast website. And if you are at a loose end and would like to join another feast, you can find some via the “Go To One” link on the website. It is not too certain, though if all these promised 414 street feasts will really happen. Some have very little information.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but you need to organise the food yourself.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Dublin Kite Festival 2018 will take place this weekend on North Bull Island\/Dollymount Strand off Clontarf.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be Kite Making workshops, Kite flying demonstrations, an introduction to Powerkites, Buggy and land.kiting demonstrations and a kite maker competition. There is also a food village.<\/a><\/p>\n

You don’t need a kite to go to the festival. There is plenty to see, but if you have a kite, bring it and let it fly!<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free. The schedule can be found on the website below. There will be a free Shuttle Bus service to the festival from Clontarf Road junction with Causeway Road. Bloomsday is around the corner again. The James Joyce inspired day that causes major palpitations for Joyce fans and doesn’t move the rest in the slightest. The festival runs from Monday 11 June – Saturday 16 June with the main Bloomsday on Saturday 16 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are plenty of events happening during the week, but nearly all of them are not free, some even quite pricey. Maybe that is an indication about the affluence of the audience that is Bloomsday mad?<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily there is one glorious exception! The James Joyce Museum in the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove will have a whole range events that are all free of charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bloomsday is around the corner again. The James Joyce inspired day that causes major palpitations for Joyce fans and doesn’t move the rest in the slightest. The festival runs from Monday 11 June – Saturday 16 June with the main Bloomsday on Saturday 16 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are plenty of events happening during the week, but nearly all of them are not free, some even quite pricey. Maybe that is an indication about the affluence of the audience that is Bloomsday mad?<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily there is one glorious exception! The James Joyce Museum in the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove will have a whole range events that are all free of charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery\u2019s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.<\/a><\/div>\n

Bloomsday is around the corner again. The James Joyce inspired day that causes major palpitations for Joyce fans and doesn’t move the rest in the slightest. The festival runs from Monday 11 June – Saturday 16 June with the main Bloomsday on Saturday 16 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are plenty of events happening during the week, but nearly all of them are not free, some even quite pricey. Maybe that is an indication about the affluence of the audience that is Bloomsday mad?<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily there is one glorious exception! The James Joyce Museum in the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove will have a whole range events that are all free of charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bloomsday is around the corner again. The James Joyce inspired day that causes major palpitations for Joyce fans and doesn’t move the rest in the slightest. The festival runs from Monday 11 June – Saturday 16 June with the main Bloomsday on Saturday 16 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are plenty of events happening during the week, but nearly all of them are not free, some even quite pricey. Maybe that is an indication about the affluence of the audience that is Bloomsday mad?<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily there is one glorious exception! The James Joyce Museum in the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove will have a whole range events that are all free of charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Enda Kenny to be named “European of the Year” – Ohh!?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Journal.ie reported on Thursday<\/a> that Enda Kenny will receive the “European Movement Ireland\u2019s European of the Year Award” and he is getting that prize “for his work in building Ireland\u2019s relationship with Europe throughout some of the most challenging circumstances in our recent history”.<\/p>\n

The Journal.ie allows people to comment on news and while it was a big mistake to remove the thumbs down option on these comments, the commenting sometimes gives an interesting insight in people’s thoughts AND there are some hilarious (and some stupid) commenters active on the platform so that it is often worth a read.<\/a><\/p>\n

The comments to this message were mainly surprise, incredulity and ridicule for Enda Kenny and the prize givers, but most commenters missed the main point…or where somewhat mislead by TheJournal.ie.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since the headline read “European of the Year”, most would initially think that he was voted the most European person from all over Europe of the Year, but that is not the case. The “European Movement Ireland” only looked at Irish people (or people in Ireland) and that means the list would be VERY short, so it is really the “Irish European of the Year” award. Now suddenly we are not surprised anymore that Kenny got the prize. If you can only choose between a couple of people, then EVEN an Enda Kenny can win a prize! :-O<\/a><\/p>\n
