I love bank holiday weekends and this one is even better because it loks like it will be warm and even sunny. Spring has arrived!! Finally! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There are lots of events happening this weekend and it is a weekend to get out. If you have a garden, you will have perfect weather for doing some work there. But then you will miss the events! So maybe do the work on Monday and go to events on Sunday. It’s a good compromise!<\/a><\/p>\n

The bill situation is still looking ok, but now is the time when I need to ask for help again. The outstanding bill for May has been reduced to EUR 135. Hurray! We are getting busier! This weekend there is a Family Festival Wekend in St. Anne’s Park (Sat-Mon) and the Bray Jazz Festival is happening (Thurs-Mon). In addition there is the New Market Collective Market in Dublin 8 and a “Dogs’ Day Out” at Kilruddery House near Bray. Interesting is also the National Open Farm Day event on Monday. <\/a><\/p>\n

The Sophisticats is a great Jazz and Swing band that plays music from the “Roaring Twenties” to the Sing Era and even some “vintage” versions of today’s hits.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fronted by the outstanding Jazz singer Joan Shields, who is backed by some of the best Jazz musicians in Dublin, this will be a great night out with cool music and you are invited (but it is not compulsory) to come in vintage dress to help the atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n

The venue Bagots Hutton is still a bit of a well kept secret, but it is perfectly suited for an event like that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maplin is closing down<\/h2>\n

I heard during the week that Maplin in Jervis street is closing down. I am not sure what the dates are, maybe it will be gone already this weekend, but it seems that a closure sale is happening right now. The reason for the closure is that the whole Maplin company went into admisnistration at the end of February as has been reported here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One one hand it is a surprise that Maplin is closing because it was always so horribly overpriced that there must be a huge margin in the business. On the other hand, it is surprising that it survived for more than 40 years as it is such an overpriced shop.<\/a><\/p>\n

There were 2 shops in Dublin and one in Dundalk, Cork, Galway and Limerick. The UK Operation had more than 200 shops and over 2300 employees.<\/a><\/p>\n

The flipside is that soon we will have only Starbucks and Centras left in the streets of our cities as all other shops will have moved to online sales or have closed down. In the medium term that is definitely a problem, but with the high prices in retail shops it is not a big surprise that this is happening. :-O<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n

“\u00c9ireannach – A Worldwide Exhibition linking people with plants through Botanical art” is a new exhibition in the National Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/p>\n

Botanical Art Worldwide is a collaboration between botanical artists, organizations and institutions worldwide. Twenty-three artists are creating and exhibiting botanical artworks of native plants found in each of their countries to create a record of today\u2019s botanical diversity. Digital slide shows of up to forty works, with all other countries\u2019 images will be shown at each venue during the run of each exhibition. The Irish Society of Botanical Artists will be hosting an open day on the 18th of May which will include a tour of the exhibition, demonstrations and a chance to meet the artists involved.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be on show daily in the Gallery Space in the Visitor Centr.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a difficult description as everybody ages and therefore the tagline doesn’t make THAT much sense. In essence, the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not too much either as nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared and in all honesty most 55-60 year olds wouldn’t be close to insulted if they were classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? We don’t know really know!! So I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-) I hope that explanation helps a little.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website has a good enough search facility, although I never understand why event organisers subdivide Dublin into four or five “territories”. You can see the full programme here<\/a> but I will also never understand why organisers will not make programmes downloadable. <\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 72 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events are sorted in reverse order, starting with the 30 May. Talk about confusing “older” users!?<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a difficult description as everybody ages and therefore the tagline doesn’t make THAT much sense. In essence, the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not too much either as nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared and in all honesty most 55-60 year olds wouldn’t be close to insulted if they were classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? We don’t know really know!! So I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-) I hope that explanation helps a little.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website has a good enough search facility, although I never understand why event organisers subdivide Dublin into four or five “territories”. You can see the full programme here<\/a> but I will also never understand why organisers will not make programmes downloadable.<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 72 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events are sorted in reverse order, starting with the 30 May. Talk about confusing “older” users!?<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

FAKE – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a difficult description as everybody ages and therefore the tagline doesn’t make THAT much sense. In essence, the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not too much either as nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared and in all honesty most 55-60 year olds wouldn’t be close to insulted if they were classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? We don’t know really know!! So I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-) I hope that explanation helps a little.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website has a good enough search facility, although I never understand why event organisers subdivide Dublin into four or five “territories”. You can see the full programme here<\/a> but I will also never understand why organisers will not make programmes downloadable.<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 72 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events are sorted in reverse order, starting with the 30 May. Talk about confusing “older” users!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a difficult description as everybody ages and therefore the tagline doesn’t make THAT much sense. In essence, the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not too much either as nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared and in all honesty most 55-60 year olds wouldn’t be close to insulted if they were classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? We don’t know really know!! So I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-) I hope that explanation helps a little.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website has a good enough search facility, although I never understand why event organisers subdivide Dublin into four or five “territories”. You can see the full programme here<\/a> but I will also never understand why organisers will not make programmes downloadable.<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 72 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events are sorted in reverse order, starting with the 30 May. Talk about confusing “older” users!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a difficult description as everybody ages and therefore the tagline doesn’t make THAT much sense. In essence, the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not too much either as nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared and in all honesty most 55-60 year olds wouldn’t be close to insulted if they were classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? We don’t know really know!! So I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-) I hope that explanation helps a little.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website has a good enough search facility, although I never understand why event organisers subdivide Dublin into four or five “territories”. You can see the full programme here<\/a> but I will also never understand why organisers will not make programmes downloadable.<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 72 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events are sorted in reverse order, starting with the 30 May. Talk about confusing “older” users!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery\u2019s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.<\/a><\/div>\n

Slovenian artist Janez Jan\u0161a\u2019s work deals with problems of identity, reconstruction, copying and acting. In November 2007, he directed Fake It! a dance piece based on five famous choreographies by other artists. It was created as a response to the lack of access to acclaimed international dance performances in post-communist Slovenia. In this talk, Janez will explain the process and products of this performance, and how authorship and copyright can be viewed within performance art.<\/a><\/p>\n

Beginning with a conversation about poetry in general and what led the participants to poetry, the discussion will move on to consider a specific work. Each poet will choose one poem from their work prior to the event. Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a difficult description as everybody ages and therefore the tagline doesn’t make THAT much sense. In essence, the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not too much either as nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared and in all honesty most 55-60 year olds wouldn’t be close to insulted if they were classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So where does that leave us? We don’t know really know!! So I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-) I hope that explanation helps a little.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website has a good enough search facility, although I never understand why event organisers subdivide Dublin into four or five “territories”. You can see the full programme here<\/a> but I will also never understand why organisers will not make programmes downloadable.<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 72 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events are sorted in reverse order, starting with the 30 May. Talk about confusing “older” users!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2018″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

Election Posters? Yes or No?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elections usually come with a small discussion about election posters. At every election a vast amount of “Vote Me! Vote Me!” posters with the faces of the numerous candidates are put up on lamp posts and bridges all over the country. But it is not certain, possibly even doubtful, if the posters have any positive effect on voters. Many think that they are just totally ineffective and do not influence voters at all.<\/a><\/p>\n

The rules around election posters are very strict. They are only allowed to be on display from a clearly specified date before the elections (max 30 days) and until 1 week after the election. If posters are up too early or didn’t get removed in time, they are considered as litter and the party will get fined for each poster that has been found. But even with all these rules, many think posters should be forbidden completely.<\/a><\/p>\n

And then a Referendum comes along that doesn’t just bring mugshots of wannabe politicians onto the posters, but instead shows foetuses, pregnancy bellies with painted babies on them and other graphic posters by the NO side with all sorts of dramatic and seemingly not always truthful warnings. The YES side on the other hand might be accused of too much simplifying the options. And since we know that this is a hugely emotional disagreement between YES and NO and that it is highly unlikely that the posters will change someone’s opinions, I am totally in favour of forbidding all election and referendum posters in future.<\/a><\/p>\n

Keep the lampposts free from litter and save the money for better uses!<\/a><\/p>\n
