After a great but a little short holiday in my mothercountry (or fatherland) I am back in Dublin, but nothing really prepares you for a temperature of 7 degrees in April (!!) when you had the pleasure to enjoy 21 degrees for a few days. What is wrong this year? I don’t remember it ever that cold for that long. In just about 2 weeks some people will tell us (incorrectly!) that it is the start of summer. The Ranelagh Players Theatre Group will perform their newest play “Sugar \/ Some Like it Hot” from Thur 12 April until Sat 14 April at 20:00 every night. It is a stage version of Billy Wilder’s comedy film “Some Like It Hot” from the 50s. Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis were in the film.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is EUR 12 \/10 and tickets will be available at the door.<\/a><\/p>\n

No, it didn’t look like we ever would get there, but forecasts indicate that next Wednesday (18 April) is the first day this year on which the temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees, not even in the night. It won’t last though, two days later, the night temperatures are down to 7 degrees again, but at least we have two days!<\/a><\/p>\n

Could that be the summer 2018?? :-D Two days of temperatures up to 17 degrees? You never know! Many of us had nearly given up hope already. Enjoy Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, they will be the best days.<\/a><\/p>\n

Topaz filling stations undergoing an odd re-branding<\/h2>\n
\n

All 420 Topaz filling stations in Ireland will be re-branded to<\/a> “Circle K” at a cost of a mad EUR 20mio. There is absolutely no need to move away from the well established “Topaz” brand in Ireland and in my opinion the new “Circle K” brand looks much cheaper than the Topaz brand, which makes the move even more odd.<\/p>\n

Here is a picture of a Topaz station<\/a> and here is one of a Circle K filling station<\/a> in the USA.<\/p>\n

But a LOT has happened with Topaz recently. Topaz was owned by Denis O’Brien and in 2015 he sold it to the Canadian company Couche-Tard, which has something like 6500 filling stations in North America and 1500 other stores and also is operating convenience stores and\/or filling stations in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Mexico.<\/a><\/p>\n

The global Circle K stores and filling stations is the reason why it was decided to bring the Irish brand in line with the global branding. But remember that Topaz only recently re-branded all Esso filling stations to Topaz and now another rebrand is happening. 20mio to make your brand look cheaper than before. Mad! You might also remember that Topaz was some while back Statoil and Shell, so a lot of rebrands and changes. :-O<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

O’Connell Round Tower at Glasnevin Cemetery to re-open<\/h2>\n
\n

If you have ever been at Glasnevin Cemetery or at least have driven by, then you know that there is a mighty high round tower in the cemetery and it is built above the grave chamber of the O’Connell family.<\/a><\/p>\n

Irish politician Daniel O’Connell is buried there and the 55m high tower was built in 1855 to commemorate him. Via a staircase on the inside people were able to climb to the top and get a great view from there. But in 1971 a bomb explosion damaged the staircase and the tower was closed until this week.<\/a><\/p>\n

A new staircase with 198 steps has been installed and on Saturday the tower will re-open. Admission is combined with admission to the Glasnevin Museum and costs EUR 12 for adults and EUR 9 for children.<\/a><\/p>\n

The museum\u2019s collection, the only one of its kind in the world, constitutes an incomparable direct link to the past of almost 6.5 million Irish and 40 million Irish-American people.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sir Frederick William Moore (1857-1949 – Curator of the National Botanic Gardens) has had nine species of orchids named in his honour due to his specialist approach to these flowers. Inspired by Moore’s ties to the orchidologist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, botanic artist Margareta Pertl will exhibit paintings of all of the plants named after Sir Frederick Moore.<\/a><\/p>\n

Alongside Pertl\u2019s works, Deborah Lambkin, currently the official artist to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Orchid Committee, will showcase her illustrations of recently award-winning plants.<\/a><\/p>\n

Orchid associated material from the National Botanic Gardens archives will also accompany the exhibition along with a fine art print catalogue and elaboration on the tales of the depicted orchids by Brendan Sayers.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be on show in the Gallery Space of the Visitor Centre. Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition it unfortunately turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition it unfortunately turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition it unfortunately turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

For men and women across Africa, marriage is nearly universal. However, the duration of marriage is far from equal. Large age gaps and lower rates of remarriage after divorce and widowhood mean that women\u2019s married lives are much shorter. One in ten African women above the age of 14 is a widow, and six percent are divorcees.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dominique van de Walle is a Lead Economist in the World Bank\u2019s Research Department and she will talk about the findings from a small but growing number of rigorous descriptive and quantitative studies that investigate welfare and marital shocks.<\/a><\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition it unfortunately turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

“Does Irish History have a Future?” is a symposium hosted by the Irish Historical Society.<\/a><\/p>\n

Four decades ago, Robert Dudley Edwards published \u2018An Agenda for Irish History, 1978\u20132018\u2019, laying down various prescriptions for younger historians which, he indicated, they would ignore at their peril.<\/a><\/p>\n

His far-sighted agenda raises two broad issues for the rising generation of Irish historians. First, to what extent have Irish historians achieved what Edwards considered essential for the survival of the profession? Second, what prescriptions would it be reasonable and desirable to propose for the future of Irish historical practice over the next four decades, assuming (as Edwards posited) that \u2018mankind has successfully avoided the danger of destroying all life upon earth\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n

Four historians will be invited to offer their views on these issues in presentations of 15 minutes, to be followed by an open discussion.<\/a><\/p>\n

For more than twenty years a number of Italian writers have been digging deep into the dirt of society. In their crime novels, authors such as Massimo Carlotto, Carlo Lucarelli and Giancarlo De Cataldo do not hesitate to paint a dark portrait of the Belpaese, one in which the conventional divisions between good and evil, fiction and reality are blurred. These are the writers of Italian Noir, whose stories aim at exploring the black heart of Italy. Between April and June 2018 the Italian Institute of Culture will host the three mentioned noir writers.<\/a><\/p>\n

Massimo Carlotto is one of the major figures of Italian noir. He was born in Padua in 1957. He began his literary activity with Il fuggiasco (The Fugitive, 1995) but his most famous character is the Alligator, alias Marco Buratti, an original private detective. His books have been translated into many languages and his novels, challenging the conventional divisions between fiction and reality, depict a world in which injustice is a given fact and the Belpaese shows its black heart.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event will be introduced and moderated by Dr. Marco Amici (University College Cork).
The conversation will be both in English and in Italian.<\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition it unfortunately turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery\u2019s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.<\/a><\/div>\n

“The Victorian Global Bookshelf: Asian Literature in English Translation, 1845-1915” is a lecture followed by a workshop.<\/a><\/p>\n

In the late 18th + 19th centuries, most of the canonical poetry and fiction, philosophy and scripture in Persian, Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese and other Asian languages was translated into English. But in addition to academic translations made for the use of scholars, missionaries, and colonial officials, hundreds of editions were also created for the general, non-expert reader.<\/a><\/p>\n

During this lecture and workshop, you will find out who produced these translations and who published them. And you will discover how they were read and used, based on personal copies owned and annotated by Victorian readers.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event will start with a lecture in the Long Room Hub, given by Dr Alexander Bubb, followed by a books workshop in the Henry Jones Room of the Old Library. Both events are free and open to all, but pre-registration is required for the workshop and numbers are limited.<\/a><\/p>\n

The singers and players of Chant 21 are delighted to present you with a blooming bouquet of musical performance. Among the 17th centurt Italian music genres, the secular chamber cantata is the least well known. The typical cantata begins with a recitative and the appearance on stage of a pastoral character who alternates bewtween the role of the narrator and his own character by switching btween recitatives and arias. This fascinating evening of lute music and human voice will feature masters such as Claudio Monteverdi, Luigi Rossi, Antonio Cesti among others.<\/a><\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition it unfortunately turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

Throughout April there will be numerous events in connection with this literature event. The website is below and if you want to download the programme, you can do that here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the publication of the essay collection “Twenty-First Century Popular Fiction”, the School of English is hosting a day-long symposium on the theme of \u2018Popular Fiction in Transition.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

Since the 1990s, the study of popular fiction has been transformed from a relatively niche topic into one of the most vibrant and rapidly expanding areas of inquiry within contemporary literary studies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The symposium will bring together academics, fans and authors in lively discussion panels to consider current and future trends in popular fiction, including increasing genre hybridity, new and emerging genres and popular fiction\u2019s relationship to transmedia elements such as film, TV and podcasts.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Airport and Aer Lingus are having a laugh!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last Friday I flew to Germany with Aer Lingus. It was an early start with a departure time of 07:00, so most people are not too keen to go for a healthy walk or jog at around 06:00 when you are on your way to the boarding gate. But Aer Lingus is considering our health and must have assumed that I was indulging the night before, because they were determined to get me to walk the calories off.<\/a><\/p>\n

You check in Terminal 2 and you already know that for a tiny island, the airport in Dublin forces you to walk mad distances, but when you find out that your plane is not at Terminal 2 at all, but instead is parked at the Terminal that Aer Lingus is allegedly NOT using anymore, i.e. Terminal 1, then you feel that someone is having a laugh.<\/a><\/p>\n

So you check in at Terminal 2 and then walk alllllll the way to Terminal 1 to board your flight. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

If that is not odd then wait for the return flight story:<\/a><\/p>\n

On Tuesday we flew back to Dublin and arrived around 22:00. Usually you can leave the plane through the front and back door, but we were told that we will only be able to leave through the front door and that a bus will bring us to the terminal. But when we got out, there was no bus. Instead we were directed to a (new) walk way that brought us to a building that I had never seen before. I thought this is an extension of Terminal 2, but not so fast! We entered the building through the door on the right and were told to queue at the door OUT of the building in the left. :-O What for? To wait for the bus!<\/a><\/p>\n

So you walk from the plane to this isolated new building, enter the building just to queue again to get out. Then you take the bus and it brings you to Terminal 2 where you have another loooooong walk to passport control and exit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Are Dublin Airport and Aer Lingus that incompetent? Have they ever seen any other airports where buses bring passengers to the terminals? The bus normally waits next to the plane and then brings you to the airport. Why do we have to walk to a terminal to enter a bus that will bring us to a terminal. The new isolated building is called “South Gates” as I found out later. It was opened in December2017 after being built for EUR22 mio and is only used by Aer Lingus for flights to Britain and Europe. Connection to and from the terminal is only via bus.<\/a><\/p>\n

Can anyone tell me why Terminal 2 was built? Are any flights departing from and arriving at Terminal 2? Or do we have a situation where Terminal 1 and (mostly empty) Terminal 2 are already not big enough anymore? If that is the case then the future is not looking good.<\/a><\/p>\n
