Ahh will it ever get warmer? On Thursday night Met Eireann warned again about temperatures of down to -4 degrees. That was not for Dublin, but still! In Dublin the temperatures are between +4 and +12 until next Saturday (14 April). That is still cold for Spring.<\/a><\/p>\n

I will be in Germany over this coming weekend and the forecast for Monday is +19! :-O That’s much nicer! I will see if I can bring some heat back in my suitcase.<\/a><\/p>\n

SuperValu and Tesco are in arms over being found out<\/h2>\n
\n

Everyone knows that SuperValu is not the lowest price shop when it comes to food shopping and Tesco is also more known for a wide range of products than for their great prices. Sure they both have regularly special offers and then might come close to other supermarkets, but in general the price level is much higher than the discount shops.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now Aldi got an accountancy firm<\/a> to do a price survey for a basket of products that undoubtedly was a little biased towards Aldi and unsurprisingly the survey found out that Aldi and Lidl are the lowest priced supermarkets and that SuperValu is the most expensive. Tesco is in the middle. The average cost were \u20ac65.04 in Aldi, \u20ac65.53 in Lidl, \u20ac76.54 in Tesco, \u20ac80.74 in Dunnes Stores and \u20ac95.50 in SuperValu.<\/p>\n

SuperValu and Tesco no complained about Aldi instead of bringing their prices down. That’s one way of dealing with it.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n

Sir Frederick William Moore (1857-1949 – Curator of the National Botanic Gardens) has had nine species of orchids named in his honour due to his specialist approach to these flowers. Inspired by Moore’s ties to the orchidologist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, botanic artist Margareta Pertl will exhibit paintings of all of the plants named after Sir Frederick Moore.<\/a><\/p>\n

Alongside Pertl\u2019s works, Deborah Lambkin, currently the official artist to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Orchid Committee, will showcase her illustrations of recently award-winning plants.<\/a><\/p>\n

Orchid associated material from the National Botanic Gardens archives will also accompany the exhibition along with a fine art print catalogue and elaboration on the tales of the depicted orchids by Brendan Sayers.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be on show in the Gallery Space of the Visitor Centre. Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

FAKE – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Las maestras de la R\u00e9publica \/ Women School teachers of the Republic” (2013, Directed by Pilar Pi\u00e9rez Solano) is a documentary that will be screened in Pearse Street Library on Saturday.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Education was a central tenet of Spain\u2019s Second Republic (1931-1939), with the objective of bringing culture and education to all parts of the country and all social classes. A group of female school teachers were part of this project and, working with male colleagues, also broke down barriers between male and female. These women stood for modernity and independence and Pilar P\u00e9rez Solano tells their story through archival footage and dramatized recreation of one young woman\u2019s experiences.”<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

For the 90th anniversary of the Istituto Luce, nine up-and-coming directors were given access to archival footage from WW1 to the late 20th century. Each presents a ten-minute short film aiming to build up a composite image of Italy. The result is an album full of different narratives which speaks of the outbreak of war, pleas for peace; building collapses and reconstruction; recollections of lost landscapes, and (possibly) lost realities; miracles, superstitions and dreams.<\/a><\/p>\n

The lecture series “Irish Women and the First World War” explores different aspects of Irish women from anti-enlistment activism to working in munition factories and war-time nursing. The final lecture assesses the legacy and long-term impact of the war on the role of women in Irish society. In parallel there is also the exhibition “Doing their Bit: Irish Women and the First World War” on display at Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 until 28 April 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

“War and Revolution: Framing 100 years of Cultural Opposition in Ukraine” is an exhibition by Dr Orysia Kulick, Research Fellow in Ukrainian Studies, School of Languages, Cultures and Literatures, TCD. It will be on show from Wednesday 11 April – Friday 11 May.<\/a><\/p>\n

The last century of Ukrainian history has been shaped by war, revolution and the struggle for statehood. The Russian Revolution of 1917 swept away the Romanov dynasty, unleashing five years of social upheaval in the southwestern borderlands. The Euromaidan Revolution of 2014 precipitated Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war in the Donbass. The decades in between saw civil war, famine, the Stalinist purges, mass repression and surveillance, as well as attempts by Soviet Ukrainians to reform and humanise socialism from within.<\/a><\/p>\n

Through striking works produced by several generations of writers and artists, this Exhibition on one hundred years of cultural opposition in Ukraine will provide visitors with a deeper understanding of Ukraine\u2019s complex historical legacies, as well as various modes of cultural resistance. <\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: One City, One Book” is an initiative by Dublin City Council that encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The One City, One Book choice for 2018 is “The Long Gaze Back” edited by Sin\u00e9ad Gleeson has the subtitle “An Anthology of Irish Women Writers”. The book is a collection of thirty stories from writers from the 18th Century to now. <\/a><\/p>\n

Throughout April there will be numerous events in connection with this literature event. The website is below and if you want to download the programme, you can do that here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Copying the Masters” is the revival of an old Gallery tradition of copying part, or all, of a painting as way of learning about past artists. 16 students from the National College of Art and Design, together with NCAD Lecturer in Drawing and Painting, Kenneth Donfield, will be working from 14:00-17:00 in the Grand Gallery as part of a four week collaboration.<\/a><\/p>\n

FameLab is a yearly competition in 30 countries and this event in the Science Gallery is the Ireland Final.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cArmed only with their wits and a few props, the top newest voices from the world of science, technology, engineering and maths will deliver three-minute talks on weird and wonderful science concepts. Expect to hear anything from why people are taller in space, to wasps that live inside figs and how there are good guys and bad guys when it comes to vaccinations.<\/a><\/p>\n

Presentations will then be judged according to FameLab\u2019s golden rules \u2013 the three Cs: Content, Clarity and Charisma. As an audience member you too can be involved in the judging process and have the power to rate the contestants along with the panel of judges.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The winner of FameLab Ireland will then go on to represent the nation at the international FameLab final at the Cheltenham Science Festival, UK in June 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

MusicTown from 13-22 April is intended to be a celebration of Dublin\u2019s rich music heritage and lively contemporary music scene. When the festival was proposed by Ray Yeates (Dublin City Arts Officer) four years ago, it was suggested that it should focus only on classical music, but he had invited a large group of people with an interest in music and events who thought it should be a lot more than classical music. Initially this was heard, but I see this year, that the festival is getting a more and more classical music schedule. In addition it turned from a “mainly free” festival to a “mainly NOT free”. <\/a><\/p>\n

An important corner stone, and the reason why it takes place at this time in April, is H\u00e4ndel\u2019s Messiah and its first performance in Dublin on 13 April 1742.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every year on 13 April a concert takes place on Fishamble Street, just outside were in 1742 Georg Friedrich H\u00e4ndel\u2019s Messiah had its World Premiere. This year is the 276th anniversary of this event and Our Lady\u2019s Choral Society will again perform excerpts from Messiah. They will be supported by the Dublin Handelian Orchestra. Conductor is Proinns\u00edas \u00d3 Duinn.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performance will be on the street no matter what weather, so be prepared. It is a great event in a historic location and the finale of the performance is always lots of fun (you will be invited to participate!).<\/a><\/p>\n

Cyclists seeing red & Cyclists vs motorists
<\/strong><\/p>\n

The newspaper journalists LOVE to stir sh*t and create confrontation! It sells the paper and that’s what their job depends on, so we fully understand that. ;-) However if you brought the wrong two sides up against each other you could get squashed in the middle, so you have to pick wisely! A good target to pick are cyclists and motorists. There is a natural dislike for each other it seems and also you steer far away from any racial or gender issues and accusations of discrimination.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week the Irish Times reported<\/a> that “More fines issued to cyclists but not to drivers parking in cycle lanes”. I get the link BUT this is just sh*t stirring! The journalist didn’t write about “More fines issued to speeding motorists than to drunk motorists” or something like that.<\/p>\n

Cars in cycling lanes is against the law (during the hours a cycling lane is active or if there is a full white line) and there is no justification for parking there. And in the same way, crossing a red traffic light is against the law and there is no justification for doing it, but comparing the number of tickets is nonsensical. <\/a><\/p>\n

It is intersting though that there were 571 (!) fines given to cyclists who crossed red lights in the Dublin region. Considering that you can hardly ever be at a red light as a pedestrian or in a car WITHOUT seeing a cyclists crossing a red light, this is just a tiny tip of a HUGE iceberg and but it did already amount to a sizeable number of 571.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a totally stupid and very dangerous thing to do at best of time! So I hope that the guardai will continue stopping cars and bikes who cross red lights!<\/a><\/div>\n

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
