Filmbase has closed after 32 years<\/h2>\n

It might come as a big surprise to many: Filmbase in Temple Bar has announced on Thursday that they will regrettably have to close their doors after 32 years and will go into voluntary liquidation!! Filmbase was for all these years a place where filmmakers would find support, get training, rent equipment, get funding and it was also a great venue for film screenings, exhibitions and other events.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Filmbase team explains that the debts became just to big to continue. They were a member-run organisation with about 1000 members and relied heavily on external funding.<\/a><\/p>\n

Science Gallery’s Make Shop is closing<\/h2>\n

The Science Gallery is a really cool place and if you are a long term Dublin Event Guide reader you know how much I love the gallery and the exhibitions. About 5 years ago, they opened a Make Shop in Lincoln Place, next to the Dental Clinic and kind of opposite of the Clare Street entrance of the National Gallery. The Make Shop is a great space for learning how to craft electrical toys and usable items for a very very low price. You can build a radio or a torch with a small number of components and learn how to solder and lots of other things. Ideal for kids, but also suitable for adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

An initial buzz kept the place busy for a while, but since then it became a nearly ignored cousin of the Science Gallery. There were hardly any promotions for it lately and I would imagine it is relatively quiet there week after week.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday is St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s National Holiday. Because the public holiday is on a Saturday this year, we will get an extra day off on the following Monday.<\/a><\/p>\n

On St. Patrick’s Day itself the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take in Dublin (and elsewhere), but sadly usually the City Centre degrades right after the parade into a trouble zone with far too many drunk youths and a heavy police presence, Grafton Street and Temple Bar were in previous years areas to avoid and while every year there is the hope that things will turn out different, we still have the same problem year after year. Regrettably the St. Patrick’s Festival organisation has never made any attempt to offer an alternative to getting drunk to young people after the parade and that organisation doesn’t have responsibility for the state people put themselves into, it would be a good idea to see if alternative events after the parade could help solving the problem.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many shops will close on St. Patrick’s Day, but as far as I know all “out of town” shopping centres (Dundrum, Blanchardstown, Liffey Valley) are open.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bray’s St. Patrick’s Festival will happen on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a parade on Saturday at 14:00 from Town Hall down Main Street then into Quinnsboro Road and on to the Seafront (Strand Road) via Seapoint Road.<\/a><\/p>\n

At 17:00 the band Boomerang will play at the bandstand and later there will be numerous gigs in pubs and restaurants. <\/a><\/p>\n

At the Seafront is a big Funfair (daily from 12:00-20:00)<\/a><\/p>\n

And on Sunday the festival continues with an Open Air Ceili at the Boathouse from 11:00, a Puppetshow at the Boathouse from 12:00, a classic and vintage car show from 14:00-16:00 at the bandstand and a variety of gigs on pubs and restaurants in Bray.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Monday Street Theatre at the bandstand (14:00 and 15:30) and more gigs in pubs will happen.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are also two walks (Bray Head Walk on Monday at 12:00 and a Historical Walk 1t 15:00 on Sunday), but they both are booked out.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is a Seafood Festival in Howth from Saturday until Monday. Pubs and Restaurants in Howth will celebrate the festival with special seafood dishes and at Howth Harbour there are food stalls and a main stage and a “Living Howth Stage. The programme details are in this year very scarce. In previous years you would have found out a lot more on the pages above. Usually there are cooking demos, history tours and talks, exhibitions, children events, RNLI or Coast Guard events etc. This year none of this is mentioned. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

And another issue: Until 2015 the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival took place in late April, then – in their wisdom – the organisers moved it from 2016 to a six week earlier date to coincide with the St. Patrick’s weekend. For an outdoor festival like the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival a risky move. And it looks as if this year the Prawn Festival organisers should maybe reflect on that decision. St. Patrick’s Day is hardly ever warm, but this year it is extreme. Wrap up well!!<\/a><\/p>\n

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday will assemble around Parnell Square and will get going at 12:00. It will wind its way along O’Connell Street (on the opposite side from the LUAS). then go to College Green, Dame Street, Lord Edward Street, Christ Church Cathedral. Here the parade will take a left turn and go along Patrick Street to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and then continue into Kevin Street and the full length until Aungier Street. This last bit is an extension of he route and it is a relevant extension (see below!).<\/a><\/p>\n

Thee weather will be COLD but not as cold as originally expected. And every year there are up to 200,000 people standing along the parade route. The organisers will claim that it was more than half a million, but that is incorrect as simple calculations show. Still 200,000 is a lot and that means that you will not see much unless you are in the first 2-4 rows along the parade route. If you want to see the participants (7 colourful parade displays and 10 bands) and not just hear the bands, you either need to be there very early, bring a ladder (yes, people do that!) OR go to a place where the chance is a little better to get close to the parade. I would recommend Patrick Street, between Christ Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedral or probably even better at the end in Kevin Street. This is a new addition to the parade route and I would expect that there will be less people than in the totally overcrowded O’Connell Street and Dame Street, two areas you should definitely avoid!<\/a><\/p>\n

DON’T bring a pram\/buggy etc, you will NOT have a good day if you do. It is just much to crowded. Bring WARM clothes and if you don’t go early (people told me in previous years that they were at the parade route approx. 3 hours before the start to get a good place) don’t expect to see much.<\/a><\/p>\n

The temperature will be around 2-3 degrees at 12:00 with a Felt Temperature of well below that (approx. -7 degrees I found). There won’t be any snow on Saturday, but there will be rain! The snow will start at around 18:00, but don’t expect it to be much and it will also not stay.<\/a><\/p>\n

So all in all it will not be a great day for this parade and therefore watching it on TV from 12:15-13:55 might be an alternative worth considsering for some.<\/a><\/div>\n

Bray’s St. Patrick’s Festival will happen on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a parade on Saturday at 14:00 from Town Hall down Main Street then into Quinnsboro Road and on to the Seafront (Strand Road) via Seapoint Road.<\/a><\/p>\n

At 17:00 the band Boomerang will play at the bandstand and later there will be numerous gigs in pubs and restaurants.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the Seafront is a big Funfair (daily from 12:00-20:00)<\/a><\/p>\n

And on Sunday the festival continues with an Open Air Ceili at the Boathouse from 11:00, a Puppetshow at the Boathouse from 12:00, a classic and vintage car show from 14:00-16:00 at the bandstand and a variety of gigs on pubs and restaurants in Bray.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Monday Street Theatre at the bandstand (14:00 and 15:30) and more gigs in pubs will happen.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are also two walks (Bray Head Walk on Monday at 12:00 and a Historical Walk 1t 15:00 on Sunday), but they both are booked out.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is a Seafood Festival in Howth from Saturday until Monday. Pubs and Restaurants in Howth will celebrate the festival with special seafood dishes and at Howth Harbour there are food stalls and a main stage and a “Living Howth Stage. And another issue: Until 2015 the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival took place in late April, then – in their wisdom – the organisers moved it from 2016 to a six week earlier date to coincide with the St. Patrick’s weekend. For an outdoor festival like the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival a risky move. And it looks as if this year the Prawn Festival organisers should maybe reflect on that decision. St. Patrick’s Day is hardly ever warm, but this year it is extreme. Wrap up well!!<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Dublin: A Year in Words – Poetry and Spoken Word Trail” is a walk through the city stopping off in 7 locations for a spoken word\/poetry performance.<\/a><\/p>\n

Starting point is the St. Patrick’s Park next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and outside the Blossom Tree Cafe.<\/a><\/p>\n

Celebrate the breadth and diversity of the city\u2019s living poets on a curated trail, based on the poet\u2019s own work and the places that inspire them. Enjoy performances from an array of emerging and established poets including Natalya O\u2019Flaherty, Phil Lynch, Erin Fornoff, Dagogo Harte, Aifric Ni Ruairc and Abby Oliveira. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Bray’s St. Patrick’s Festival will happen on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a parade on Saturday at 14:00 from Town Hall down Main Street then into Quinnsboro Road and on to the Seafront (Strand Road) via Seapoint Road.<\/a><\/p>\n

At 17:00 the band Boomerang will play at the bandstand and later there will be numerous gigs in pubs and restaurants.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the Seafront is a big Funfair (daily from 12:00-20:00)<\/a><\/p>\n

And on Sunday the festival continues with an Open Air Ceili at the Boathouse from 11:00, a Puppetshow at the Boathouse from 12:00, a classic and vintage car show from 14:00-16:00 at the bandstand and a variety of gigs on pubs and restaurants in Bray.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Monday Street Theatre at the bandstand (14:00 and 15:30) and more gigs in pubs will happen.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are also two walks (Bray Head Walk on Monday at 12:00 and a Historical Walk 1t 15:00 on Sunday), but they both are booked out.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is a Seafood Festival in Howth from Saturday until Monday. Pubs and Restaurants in Howth will celebrate the festival with special seafood dishes and at Howth Harbour there are food stalls and a main stage and a “Living Howth Stage. The programme details are in this year very scarce. In previous years you would have found out a lot more on the pages above. Usually there are cooking demos, history tours and talks, exhibitions, children events, RNLI or Coast Guard events etc. This year none of this is mentioned. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

And another issue: Until 2015 the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival took place in late April, then – in their wisdom – the organisers moved it from 2016 to a six week earlier date to coincide with the St. Patrick’s weekend. For an outdoor festival like the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival a risky move. And it looks as if this year the Prawn Festival organisers should maybe reflect on that decision. St. Patrick’s Day is hardly ever warm, but this year it is extreme. Wrap up well!!<\/a><\/p>\n

College Green Plaza – It will kill us!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

As human beings, we love stability and routine and we hate change. In its effort to protect us, our brain is interpreting change and uncertainty as danger and does everything possible to bring is back to the routine again. That is one of the reasons why changing your life or aspects of your life is so challenging.<\/a><\/p>\n

But as we should know, there is nothing more reliable than that change will occur. So it often makes more sense to focus on how change can benefit us than to focus on resisting change.<\/a><\/p>\n

The opponents of the College Green Plaza, however, are resisting as much as possible and at times in hilarious or ridiculous ways.<\/a><\/p>\n

The An Bord Pleanala hearings are taking place at the moment. An Bord Pleanala is the Irish planning authority and they have to agree to Dublin City’s plans for turning the College Green Plaza into a pedestrianised area and to ban all sorts of traffic and before they make a decision, they have to give all interested parties an opportunity to express their concerns.<\/a><\/p>\n

I remember when many years ago it was suggested to introduce a “Lotto” game in Ireland. People were OUTRAGED and saw civilisation to come to a certain end if that Lotto thing ever was allowed. The prediction was that all the unemployed and the pensioners would spend EVERY single penny on Lotto tickets and widepsread poverty would be an absolute certainty. It was – as we know now total and utter nonsense. And since then the National Lottery, has introduced more and more and more different types of lottery games and society still functions.<\/a><\/p>\n

BUT, it will all change when the College Green Plaza is pedestrianised. Because that will now finally end civilisation as we know it….at least if you listen to the opponents.<\/a><\/p>\n

Before I give you some examples of the hilarious and ridiculous arguments the NO side is bringing up, allow me to tell you that I am not the biggest fan of the College Green Plaza plans. I have a car and use it often for work but also for transporting goods and people to events and to hobby locations and Dublin has a “problem” that you will encounter whenever you drive from South Side to the North Side and vice versa. That “problem” is that darn river that limits the crossing points and causes plenty of traffic bottle necks. Sure, all this is not helped by Dublin City’s traffic rules which are in part intended to manage the limited space for traffic and in other parts there to make it as difficult as possible to experience a smooth ride in Dublin traffic so that we all hopefully leave the car at home.<\/a><\/p>\n

My preferred North-South route was through O’Connell Street, across O’Connell Bridge and then towards College Green, passing by Grafton Street and then onwards to Merrion Square. But a few years ago we were not allowed to drive down O’Connell Street anymore. then the euphemistically named “Bus Gate”, which is was more correctly a timed street closure for cars at College Green was introduced and with the LUAS from Stephen’s Green to O’Connell Street, College Green became completely impassable for cars. So bit by bit by bit we had to get used to new routes and get used to the fact that College Green will just not be available anymore at all.<\/a><\/p>\n

It was different for busses and taxis. They still used the College Green route, but now face a closure, which they resist for numerous reasons. The Dublin traders also don’t want change as they are worried, that change will push people out of the City Centre to do their shopping in the Blanchardstowns and Liffey Valleys etc. Understandable in parts, but imagine, Grafton Street was once a street that was used by bi-directional car traffic and despite the pedestrianisation of Grafton Street people still come to the city centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

So what are these crazy concerns that town planners and city traders have?<\/a><\/p>\n

Town Planner Tom Phillips who represents the retailers thinks that people will go to Dundrum etc if the key traffic artery is cut off. He has a point, but he seemingly didn’t realise that that key artery has already been essentially cut years ago and that the LUAS put the nail in the coffin. The pedestrianisation is not changing anything anymore and it is somewhat unlikely that the LUAS will be banned from College Green. He also would have most like used the same argument against the pedestrianisation of Grafton Street!! He also claims that a College Green Plaza will bring a risk of terrorism!! Where that is suddenly coming from he doesn’t explain and it sounds like total nonsense.<\/a><\/p>\n

Representatives of car park owners in the city centre want compensation for people not parking there anymore. Dohh!!! That is the whole idea. Dublin City wants to keep cars out of the city. I suggest the car park owners knock down the car parks if nobody is using them anymore and turn them into apartments. That helps with another crisis and will probably make them a lot more money,<\/a><\/p>\n

The Taxi drivers tried to use the “disabled people” card. They claimed that the proposed changes would affect vulnerable people who needed taxis. I think they have a point, BUT should that now give them also permission to drive up and down Grafton Street? And if not, why is that argument valid for College Green, but not for Grafton Street and Henry Street etc?<\/a><\/p>\n

People with disabilites were concerned that proposed two way cycle tracks would cause a danger for people with disabilities and older people. Actually, cyclists in Dublin (the ones that ignore traffic lights) are a danger to everyone, not only people with disabilities and age. But I still think that that danger is slightly lower than the danger that cars do or can cause. I can’t comment on their other concern about the lack of a street kerb, something that seemingly causes a problem for guide dogs.<\/a><\/p>\n

But it continued! On Thursday then Parliament Street became an issue. Dublin Bus wants to be able to use Parliament Street (from Liffey to City Hall) in both directions to make up for the unavailability of College Green and it was said that 1600 busses would move through the streets per day. And now the locals there had an issue. A Dr Imelda Shanahan said that the fact that 1600 busses would need to go through Parliament Street would lead to breaches in air quality standards that will continue long into the future. Wait! The use of Parliament Street will do that? We have to assume that the same number of busses are currently going through College Green, so NOTHING will change to air quality good or bad, the same situation will just be relocated. So if there are breaches there now, these breaches will still be there….just in a different street!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Consulting architect Des McMahon correctly described that the street would be more a bus corridor than an inner city street. So Parliament Street would just become what College Green is now. Not great, but not the biggest deal either in a city wide picture. (I understand that locals feel differently.)<\/a><\/p>\n

In my opinion, the traffic situation caused by the LUAS is really bad, but I was in front of Trinity College last week and unless Taxis and Busses will be completely banned from there, chaos will rule in that part of the city. There are just sooo many busses going through and that flippin LUAS doesn’t help things.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since we had to put up with the street closure at College Green for a while I started to imagine how that new plaza could be used and I found lots of great uses for it. For markets and events etc. It would create what Dublin is lacking sorely: a City Centre plaza for central events. Smithfield totally failed and you can see why and there is NO other plaza available for weekly markets, for busking and open air music. There is a serious problem though: Dublin City will probably do their best to restrict the use of this plaza sooo much that it will be empty most of the time. So I think Dublin City should stop trying to bully us into accepting the plaza and should start trying to convince us that it is a great enhancement for city life. Tell us what you plan to have there. We don’t need an empty, car free place. But we do need an central inner city event space.<\/a><\/p>\n

Traders will be still worried, because they HATE inner city markets. They don’t see that the vibrancy and the fact that it attracts lots more people to go there will automatically have a positive effect on inner city trade. Instead they are ALWAYS worried stiff that a food stall or a product stall on a market will take business AWAY from them. Short sigthedness still rules!<\/a><\/div>\n
