Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

Today’s Dublin Event Guide is very late, BUT there were virtually no events on Saturday, so I posted an update on Facebook and then added lots more events for Sunday until Friday. I hope that’s ok!<\/a><\/p>\n

An interesting few days with weather alarms, bread hysteria, snow apocalypse, trecherous blizzard conditions, 1 metre high snow fall, cancelled events and more. Not all of these happened in the way they were predicted, but it was interesting nevertheless. The forecast is “COLD” for at least another 10 days, but even until end of March, the temperature will never go above 11 degrees. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

As it looks, though, the snow will be gone soon and I’d say normality will return with plenty of bread supplies in all shops from early next week. :-D<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week there were no donations, but it’s ok because the February bills got fully paid. :-) Now we are in March and a new EUR 230 is needed to cover the cost before the end of the month. I need your help for that. So, if you have a few Euro, please help! The Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket Square has put a notice on their website that following an “incident” on 05 December, the structural integrity of part of the hall that was used for the markets every week and the cafe are not accessible anymore and it seems that means that the weekly markets (Pure Vintage Market, Rumble in the Jumble, Fusion Sunday Market and Dublin Flea Market) will be affected by this. The Flea Market will probably suffer the least because they always used the Green Door Market hall in addition to the Food Co-op hall, but the other markets will either not happen until further notice or will be severely curtailed due to lack of space.<\/a><\/p>\n

Apache Pizza bought by Spanish Telepizza<\/h2>\n
\n

Not the whole company of Apache Pizza, but a majority slice of the company was sold to Telepizza for a handsome EUR 10.7mio. Not bad for a franchising business with 130 outlets. :-O
Telepizza is a lot bigger with more than 1,600 outlets worldwide. And if you wonder why this big company is interested in the relatively small Apache, then you probably have to look in a joint venture that Telepizza is part of and that also owns the Irish Burger King franchise, so they were indirectly already active in Ireland, it seems.<\/p>\n

It is not clear if there will be any changes for Apache,, but the same management will remain in place, so that reduces the probability that there will be significant changes. Apache employs 2,300 people in Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

Jacob\u2019s Biscuit Factory & Dublin: An Assorted History<\/h2>\n

The extensive Jacob Biscuit Factory Archive held at Dublin City Library and Archive is thge basis of this exhibition that explores all aspects of the factory\u2019s twentieth century history and its impact on lives of Dubliners. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down in some old rights documents. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems they couldn’t stop it<\/a> or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so a highly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.<\/p>\n

Initially an attempt was made to add music, storytelling and other entertainment to the event so that the horse trading would be pushed in the background, but that didn’t work. So now it is back to horse trading as the main purpose.<\/a><\/p>\n

Trader need to register with Dublin City and get a trading license for the day and with all these restrictions the market is definitely not what it was before.<\/a><\/p>\n

Did it solve the problem? Well, it is highly unlikely that the horse traders now only twice a year sell and buy horses. So if they buy and sell more frequently then the trading happens elsewhere where the authorities can’t keep an eye on it. Consequently the problem might have gone away for Dublin, but if we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it is not happening!<\/a><\/p>\n

Now the big questions that people ask:
1) What is there to do?
2) I love animals. In the interest of the horses, should I go to the Horse Fair or stay away?<\/p>\n

1) There is not much to do at the event, but you will see a good few horses and a horse fair is a bit of a spectacle.
2) Many have the concern that going to the Horse Fair would support bad treatment of animals because sellers and buyers at the fair have been found in the past to mistreat the horses and ponies. However, your attendance (or not) will not have any impact on the horse fair and will also not influence the sellers or buyers to treat the animals in any other way than they normally do. Because the authorities are expected to be there in big numbers the horse handlers are probably on their best behaviour anyway. So it is unlikely that your attendance or non-attendance will have any impact on the welfare of the animals.<\/p>\n

So SHOULD you go there? Well, I was there in the “olden” times, when it was still a monthly market and it was an odd event but fascinatingly odd. There were some pretty horses and ponies and the people selling and buying were…unique. I also have been there once since the market got “cleaned” up and it wasn’t overly interesting, but that was a long while ago. If you go, please tell me about it!!<\/a><\/div>\n

Dr Ann Buckley (Trinity College Department of History) will discuss MS 78: A fifteenth-century Irish Antiphoner. Almost half a metre tall, MS 78 is a fine example of a late medieval choir book, one of the few to survive from Ireland. Beside music for services for saints Patrick, Canice and Bridget, it records the commemorations of numerous other all-but-forgotten Irish saints, including Magnan of Kilmainham.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Women in a Viking World: The Finglas Burial in Context” is a talk on International Women’s Day by archaeologist Maeve Sikora (Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland) about a special female Viking burial in Finglas, Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Viking burial found at Finglas in 2004 was richly furnished and was the first to be discovered in Ireland for over 100 years. This lecture will look at the evidence for female burial among early Viking Age graves in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland and explore how gender was expressed through grave-goods.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Augustine Henry Memorial Lecture “Is Scots Pine a Native Species?” with Dr Jenni Roche will look at one of the first tree species to colonise in Ireland after the most recent Ice Age, the Scots Pine. But about 5,000 years ago it underwent a massive decline and the last known specimen of native Scots pine in Ireland was dated to AD 400.<\/a><\/p>\n

Non-native stock was re-introduced in the Irish landscape and the species is now widespread. Yet the question remains open, did native Scots pine survive in some unknown refuge? In this lecture Dr Jenni Roche will outline the findings of this and other new research on Scots pine which has significant implications for the status of this species in Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

Donal Fallon, Historian will talk about architect Herbert Simms. Simms was employed by Dublin City Corporation during the 1920s & 1930s when the city was grappling with a housing crisis. Simms created Art Deco masterpieces of public housing and was interested in ensuring that council residents had adequate access to all the services they would need. He believed that ‘flats should last at least 200 years…..providing they were well maintained.’<\/a><\/p>\n

The Chancery Park Housing Scheme, close to the Four Courts, is an example of his work.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bread – The drama! <\/strong><\/p>\n

I never thought I would write a “This is Odd!” piece about bread, but this week’s events certainly warrant a story about odd behaviour and bread and more,<\/a><\/p>\n

When this week the end of the world was announced because there could be a storm and snow, people went into panic mode. The Red weather alarm is flagged up the second time. The first time, Dublin wasn’t really hit by Storm Ophelia in the way it was predicted and the snow and “live-threatening Blizzard conditions” this time? I wouldn’t say it was a RED condition, but, hey, I am no expert on bad weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

Back to the bread though: As soon as Yellow and then Red warnings were announced, people RUSHED to super markets and bought bread like there will be no tomorrow. First it was only bread, but then it also spread to ALL sorts of meat and eggs (!!) and bananas!<\/a><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the tins and pasta and all other durable foods, that are normally suggested for disaster preparation, weren’t in the same demand. It either suggests that people were not thinking OR that they didn’t really expect the weather apocalypse to last THAT long. The “not thinking” part refers to the quite short shelf life of bread. Unless you freeze it (Just lop it into a bucket in the backyard in weather like this!?) you will not enjoy the bread for long. But there is also the other question WHY do they all want to eat sooooo much bread? I don’t eat that much bread, so I wouldn’t know, but do people think that bread is the most important nutritional item in the home? They MIGHT not be able to buy it for one or two days. If they consequently buy three loafs to make up for it, does that mean they buy bread normally EVERY single day? Wow!<\/a><\/p>\n

I think the best “get rich quick” scheme in Ireland might be to open a bakery! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n
