Another Dublin Event Guide is completed and the plans were to send it MUCH earlier than usually, but sometimes plans do NOT work out perfectly. I am away this weekend and therefore started working on it a good few days earlier, but that alone didn’t help. Clontarf Seawater Baths to open<\/h2>\n

I was surprised reading that because a “Seawater Bath” is not the thing that I would have expected to open for business in cold February. Well and then there also is the big question if a sea water swimming pool makes sense at any time in Ireland. But David Cullen (Publican, Hotelier and owner of Seafield Hotel and Spa in Co. Wexford and of Turk’s Head in Dublin) is clearly of a different opinion.<\/a><\/p>\n

He is leasing the baths for EUR 25k per year from Dublin City and has invested a whopping amount of 2.4mio in renovating the baths. And if you still question his sanity, I can tell you that he is not relying on the attractiveness and weather-compatibility of the baths alone, but a possibly bigger attraction and revenue generator is the fact that he has a pub license for the building that is next to he baths and where he will run a bar and restaurant. So even if nobody will ever enter the water, he will have a business.<\/a><\/p>\n

Walton’s Music Shop will close soon<\/h2>\n

What’s going on? The economy is allegedly recovering or according to the Central Bank has nearly fully done so, but shops are closing? Ahh it is the rents again…and the Internet.<\/a><\/p>\n

Walton’s Music shop is an institution and is one of VERY few music shops in Dublin. But, let’s face it, Amazon and Ebay etc are also an institution and Walton’s is (and probably has to be) ALWAYS more expensive than the online shops. So the price that we have to pay is either a higher one for products OR we have to accept that we will lose “high street” retailers.<\/a><\/p>\n

In this case, we are losing the retailer in George’s Street. They will still be in Blanchardstown though and the Music School will continue in the same place above the shop.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Food Co-op Markets<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket Square has put a notice on their website that following an “incident” on 05 December, the structural integrity of part of the hall that was used for the markets every week and the cafe are not accessible anymore and it seems that means that the weekly markets (Pure Vintage Market, Rumble in the Jumble, Fusion Sunday Market and Dublin Flea Market) will be affected by this. The Flea Market will probably suffer the least because they always used the Green Door Market hall in addition to the Food Co-op hall, but the other markets will either not happen until further notice or will be severely curtailed due to lack of space.<\/a><\/p>\n

Rabo Direct Ireland is closing shop and leaving us behind<\/h2>\n
\n

There was a time when the Rabo Direct bank was the new and cheeky kid on the block. A bank that didn’t have complicated and sneaky rules and that gave customers what they really wanted from a bank. 90,000 people became (or are still) customers but over the last few years it got quiet around Rabo Direct. No more advertisement, no new attractive offers, just quiet. This week we found out why: Rabobank lost interest in Ireland and on Wednesday they announced the final chapter, which is their closure and departure from Ireland by 16 May.<\/a><\/p>\n

Surprisingly only 31 employees will be let go, but 90,000 customers and 3bio of deposits are affected.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bank explained that the reason for the departure is a decision by their Dutch parent Rabobank Group to simplify the business model across the world and reduce costs, but you can’t help it and think that Ireland was just not interesting enough anymore. Will we end up again with just the “old style” banks like AIB, BoI, Ulster Bank and Permanent TSB. The bunch that was always here and that doesn’t know what innovative services and customer focus means? :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

Inspired by the success of the Humans of New York project, he began to walk the streets of Dublin interviewing and photographing those he met along the way. What he uncovered were the powerful stories that hide in plain sight as we rush about our busy lives, too busy to notice. So began the social media phenomenon that is Humans of Dublin whose social media pages have over 175,000 followers. The extensive Jacob Biscuit Factory Archive held at Dublin City Library and Archive is thge basis of this exhibition that explores all aspects of the factory\u2019s twentieth century history and its impact on lives of Dubliners. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

Engineers Week 2018 will take place in Ireland from 24 Feb until 02 March. It is a week-long festival of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland. The main target group is school children and students from Primary Level to Third Level,so if you have children in these age groups, have a look at what is on offer. <\/a><\/p>\n

However, I searched for events for “General Public” and found NONE and then I searched for “Families” and found one (but booked out).<\/a><\/p>\n

So does this event miss a trick? Would it not make sense to have a few highlight events to get people talking about the week?<\/a><\/p>\n

Even if you look for a Primary School-age event for your kids, you could run into trouble. Can you book the event for your child or are these events that school classes only can get to? Who knows?<\/a><\/p>\n

Engineers Week 2018 will take place in Ireland from 24 Feb until 02 March. It is a week-long festival of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland. The main target group is school children and students from Primary Level to Third Level,so if you have children in these age groups, have a look at what is on offer. <\/a><\/p>\n

However, I searched for events for “General Public” and found NONE and then I searched for “Families” and found one (but booked out).<\/a><\/p>\n

So does this event miss a trick? Would it not make sense to have a few highlight events to get people talking about the week?<\/a><\/p>\n

Even if you look for a Primary School-age event for your kids, you could run into trouble. Can you book the event for your child or are these events that school classes only can get to? Who knows?<\/a><\/p>\n

The event is organised by “Engineers Ireland” with a great number of events but maybe they could make this week more accessible?<\/a><\/div>\n

However, I searched for events for “General Public” and found NONE and then I searched for “Families” and found one (but booked out).<\/a><\/p>\n

So does this event miss a trick? Would it not make sense to have a few highlight events to get people talking about the week?<\/a><\/p>\n

Engineers Week 2018 will take place in Ireland from 24 Feb until 02 March. It is a week-long festival of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland. The main target group is school children and students from Primary Level to Third Level,so if you have children in these age groups, have a look at what is on offer. <\/a><\/p>\n

However, I searched for events for “General Public” and found NONE and then I searched for “Families” and found one (but booked out).<\/a><\/p>\n

So does this event miss a trick? Would it not make sense to have a few highlight events to get people talking about the week?<\/a><\/p>\n

Even if you look for a Primary School-age event for your kids, you could run into trouble. Can you book the event for your child or are these events that school classes only can get to? Who knows?<\/a><\/p>\n

Previously ignored by the British authorities and by their nationalist opponents, its propaganda potential was quickly recognised. Engineers Week 2018 will take place in Ireland from 24 Feb until 02 March. It is a week-long festival of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland. The main target group is school children and students from Primary Level to Third Level,so if you have children in these age groups, have a look at what is on offer. <\/a><\/p>\n

However, I searched for events for “General Public” and found NONE and then I searched for “Families” and found one (but booked out).<\/a><\/p>\n

So does this event miss a trick? Would it not make sense to have a few highlight events to get people talking about the week?<\/a><\/p>\n

Even if you look for a Primary School-age event for your kids, you could run into trouble. Can you book the event for your child or are these events that school classes only can get to? Who knows?<\/a><\/p>\n

A family-friendly heritage and cultural celebration will mark the first anniversary of the Irish State\u2019s acknowledgement of Traveller ethnicity (www.ethnicitycelebration.ie). The event will showcase Travellers\u2019 culture and heritage across music, art, craft, language and the community\u2019s social history through its creative traditions.<\/a><\/p>\n

Organised by a consortium of nine Traveller organisations it will feature prominent linguists, folklorists, actors, playwrights and will for the first time bring together the three National repositories of Traveller cultural assets housed in the UCD Folklore Collection, the National Library of Ireland and the National Museum of Country Life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The day will end with a music performance featuring Irish singer, Frances Black (Senator) and uilleann pipe player, Paddy Keenan.<\/a><\/p>\n

Swiss singer Marc Aymon, accompanied by guitarist Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Jaillard, will perform songs from his new project “\u00d4 bel \u00e9t\u00e9! Chansons \u00e9ternelles”. This project highlights treasures of Swiss heritage and encourages the public to rediscover the pleasure of singing together and reconnecting with our roots.<\/a><\/p>\n

Engineers Week 2018 will take place in Ireland from 24 Feb until 02 March. It is a week-long festival of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland. The main target group is school children and students from Primary Level to Third Level,so if you have children in these age groups, have a look at what is on offer. <\/a><\/p>\n

However, I searched for events for “General Public” and found NONE and then I searched for “Families” and found one (but booked out).<\/a><\/p>\n

So does this event miss a trick? Would it not make sense to have a few highlight events to get people talking about the week?<\/a><\/p>\n

Ageism or a genuine question? – Are we too non-discriminatory?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are looking for a boy-friend\/girl-friend\/husband\/wife\/partner or a person for ANY other role in your life (e.g. baby sitter, chauffeur, pool boy ;-), cleaner, butler etc), you have a certain type of person in mind. You might have an idea if that person should be male or female, you know what skills that person should have and without a doubt you also think about that person’s age.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is extremely unlikely that you will select a male baby-sitter that is 80 years of age if he applied for the job and if you are looking for a life-partner you DEFINITELY have an ideal age range and lots of other “parameters” in mind.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is normal and everyone would agree that it makes sense. However, if a company is looking for an employee, they are NOT allowed to make a decision based on age. EVEN if the applicant is 64 and the other 20 people in your company are all under 25 you are NOT allowed to rule someone out because of age. Do you have to employ the 64 year old who will retire in one year? No! But if the reason for not hiring him is age, it could cost you a LOT. So what do you do? You INVENT reasons for rejecting him or you lie about your reasons. So making things up is ok, but being honest is not? Yep, that’s the world we live in.<\/a><\/p>\n

The background of the story is this<\/a>: The State’s further education and training organisation “Solas” was looking for an Assistant Manager for its Limerick Training Centre in 2013. Someone who was an employee in Solas already applied for the job and he was coincidentally 60 years of age. If that person had the skills and all other pre-requisites then the age shouldn’t be much of a problem, but Solas doesn’t allow you to work after 65, so in this case the employee only had 5 years left and maybe the company would have liked to get some more years out of this appointment.<\/p>\n

A question was asked that referred to the age of the applicant. The applicant claims he was asked “Do you not think at this stage that you should be taking it easier?” and Solas claims they asked “What motivates you to take on this role at this stage in your career?”. No matter what the wording was (and we will never find out!), the question was about the age.<\/a><\/p>\n

The poor applicant felt that an assumption was made about his ability to do the job based on his age and he couldn’t sleep that night because he felt unfairly treated. So he sued Solas and the Labour Court (officially: Workplace Relations Commission) sentenced Solas to pay him 20,000 Euro. Not because he should have got the job and didn’t. Not because he was fired, because he wasn’t. No, just because the FELT that injustice was done to him.<\/a><\/p>\n

We don’t know if he got the job, but what is your guess: Would he have sued Solas if they had given him the job? I’d say he would have happily taken it and suddenly would have much less unfairly treated.<\/a><\/p>\n

And do we think that age was the only problem? Well, if he was supremely suitable and another candidate was less suitable but was younger. It would be odd if the employer chose the less suitable candidate. And if two candidates were exactly evenly suitable, but there is only one job than SOME criteria has to be found to make a decision. And should it then not be permissible to use ANY criteria?<\/a><\/p>\n

Sure, we will all feel a little miffed when we get older an start feeling pushed out of the areas in life that we would like to be in. But who do you sue if you are 65 and the 20 year old man or woman that you adore doesn’t want to marry you because you are too old? Ageism? Nonsense!<\/a><\/p>\n

There is NO justification in awarding someone 20k because in an interview a question about his age was asked. Political correctness or non-discrimination is definitely gone mad!!<\/a><\/p>\n

Oh and by the way, do you think that the 20k punishment will stop the employer next time to make a decision based on age? Not in the slightest, they will just not ask the question anymore and will instead PRETEND that the decision was based on skills\/aptitude\/attitude etc. Result: The 60 year old applicant will still not get the job, but he will never find out why. Well, that is a a good improvement, dear Workplace Relations Commission.<\/a><\/p>\n
