National Dairy Council is spreading nonsense<\/h2>\n

The National Dairy Council has accused<\/a> “Social media channels” to confuse consumers about the health effects of dairy products and at the same time, they are doing their best to confuse consumers about almond milk, the biggest competitor to cow’s milk. It is nothing else than protecting their commercial interests, after all the National Dairy Council is just a milk producers’ organisation.<\/p>\n

Blaming social media channels for a changed consumer behaviour is just nonsense, BUT the Dublin Event Guide is happy to confirm all the prejudices the National Dairy Council has. :-P So let’s finish with this:<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Food Co-op Markets<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket Square has put a notice on their website that following an “incident” on 05 December, the structural integrity of part of the hall that was used for the markets every week and the cafe are not accessible anymore and it seems that means that the weekly markets (Pure Vintage Market, Rumble in the Jumble, Fusion Sunday Market and Dublin Flea Market) will be affected by this. The Flea Market will probably suffer the least because they always used the Green Door Market hall in addition to the Food Co-op hall, but the other markets will either not happen until further notice or will be severely curtailed due to lack of space.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Winter of Heritage”, “Spring into Heritage” and “Summer of Heritage” programes, are a series of free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. So began the social media phenomenon that is Humans of Dublin whose social media pages have over 175,000 followers. The extensive Jacob Biscuit Factory Archive held at Dublin City Library and Archive is thge basis of this exhibition that explores all aspects of the factory\u2019s twentieth century history and its impact on lives of Dubliners. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sixty years ago, the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 claimed the lives of many of Manchester United’s famous Busby Babes. Among the dead was Cabra native Liam Whelan, who appeared for the United side that lined up against Shamrock Rovers in Dalymount Park and who had previously played for Home Farm in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

Donal Fallon, Historian in Residence with Dublin City Council will look at the career of Liam Whelan and the rise of the ‘Busby Babes’.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, though, admission is free from 10:00-18:00 and Thursday (10:00-14:00) it will also be free. Wednesday is called “Restocked Wednesday” and Thursday is called “Half Price Thursday”, so you can see what is happening. At 14:15 then on Thursday, a clearance auction of all remaining books table by table will finish the event. All books have to go!<\/a><\/p>\n

The proceeds will be used to support the purchase of research material for the College libraries.<\/a><\/p>\n

A new 1-day Festival with a difference is coming to Dublin. The Mother Tongues Festival will feature musical performances, poetry readings and workshops for all ages, to celebrate UNESCO International Mother Language Day. Children and adults will be immersed in a world of languages and cultures. Artists and performers will be leading workshops in Irish, Japanese, Polish, French, Romanian, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, Indonesian, Chinese, Portuguese, and many other languages.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some free workshops and events, but it is not too easy to find out what is free and what isn’t. I hope to have some more concise information for you next week.<\/a><\/p>\n

Are Irish judges idiots??
<\/strong><\/p>\n

It seems that there is no end to astonishing decisions by judges in Ireland. This could be a case where drunk driving gets a little slap on the wrist or where the theft of social welfare money will be “rewarded” with the thief getting away with no punishment at all.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week another amazing story made it from the courts into the newspapers. The court decision that is absolutely unbelievable is already from 2013\/2016 and the reason why it is appearing now again is because thankfully the losing party has appealed the decision to the High Court and I can only hope that the 2016 decision will be overturned.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to an article in the Irish Independent<\/a>, this is what happened:<\/p>\n

A guy entered a pub in Rathmines one evening in April 2013. He ordered a pint and put EUR 10 on the counter. The barman picks up the EUR 10 note and says that this note is fake and possibly 10 other people in the pub heard that. The customer claimed that he got the note from the post office and therefore the note was not fake. Then the customer claims that he went to the Rathmines Garda Station, the note was tested and he was told that it is perfect. He then returned to the bar and told the barman what the garda said. The next day the customer went to his solicitor and sued the pub for defamation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sounds like a simple story, but I am still waiting for where the customer was defamed. The Circuit Court was totally on the customer’s side and awarded EUR 5,000 to the customer.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a super odd case, so keep reading, it gets a lot more interesting.<\/a><\/p>\n

But let’s look at the definition of defamation first. A defamatory statement is one which tends to injure a person\u2019s reputation in the eyes of reasonable members of society. So if the pub had been empty, the customer would not have been awarded a cent. But because there were some people in the pub that MIGHT have heard that the barman stated that this was fake money, it could be defamation. But it is ONLY defamation if the statement “injures a person’s reputation”. With the huge amounts of fake money going around, I think a lot more people than we know have handled fake notes. And if we assume that you might get a fake note as change and because most of us do not check every note we get, I think it is not certain that a person’s reputation is automatically damaged if somebody thinks that the money you have is fake.<\/a><\/p>\n

We can all FEEL to be defamed, but that doesn’t mean our reputation actually did suffer!<\/a><\/p>\n

But it continues!! Oddly, it turns out, that the customer did NOT go to the Garda Station in Rathmines and NO Garda confirmed that the money was “perfect”. The two gardai on duty that night said that nobody came with a potentially fake note and that they also don’t have a machine to check money. Wow! So did the the customer tell a big fat lie?<\/a><\/p>\n

Could that also mean that he did not get this note from the post office? Not that getting a note from a post office is a guarantee that it is not fake, but possibly the money was NOT from a source that is perceived to be reputable. Allegedly he told the barman that he got it from a “bookies or a shop” but in court the customer claimed that he said he got it from the Post Office.<\/a><\/p>\n

Looks to me that the customer’s statements might not be the most reliable? How can the Circuit Court in a situation like force the pub to give him EUR 5,000?<\/a><\/p>\n

Was that Circuit Court judge asleep? Odd!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
