Last night I went to the Science Gallery Birthday party and that took a BIG junk out of the time that I normally spend on compiling this weekly e-mail magazine. I shouldn’t really go to free events at all…especially if they are on a Thursday or Friday night! :-O I had targeted to get this mail to you before 11:00, but it took me until 13:00. Darn! “New” Luas causing problems!<\/h2>\n
\n

It is a good and a bad sign that the Public Transport system in Dublin is reaching max. capacity. Darts are packed, Busses are full and Luas trams need to be extended to deal with the amount of customers that want to use the systems. This is what the creators of Public Transport want. This is what they created all car traffic limitations for! But when it happens, then there is panic because nobody seems to have a “Next Step” plan in place. Dart platforms have been extended to the maximum. Busses are passing by bus stops without stopping and there is currently no plan to buy\/use\/deploy more busses on the busy routes and for the Luas the only way to deal with it is to extend the trams so much that now they don’t fit into our streets anymore. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

TheJournal.ie reports<\/a> that the new 55m long Luas is too long for O’Connell Bridge and therefore blocks traffic when its back is sticking out. But the longer trams are needed to accommodate all customers.<\/p>\n

What will we do when all three systems are overcrowded? <\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Food Co-op Markets<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket Square has put a notice on their website that following an “incident” on 05 December, the structural integrity of part of the hall that was used for the markets every week and the cafe are not accessible anymore and it seems that means that the weekly markets (Pure Vintage Market, Rumble in the Jumble, Fusion Sunday Market and Dublin Flea Market) will be affected by this. The Flea Market will probably suffer the least because they always used the Green Door Market hall in addition to the Food Co-op hall, but the other markets will either not happen until further notice or will be severely curtailed due to lack of space.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Winter of Heritage”, “Spring into Heritage” and “Summer of Heritage” programes, are a series of free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. So began the social media phenomenon that is Humans of Dublin whose social media pages have over 175,000 followers. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations

+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

Brad will then bring out on stage two different species of Dinosaur’s which some of the children can pet and interact with – Terry the Triceratops & Vinny the Velociraptor Dinosaur.<\/a><\/p>\n

As the Grand Finale of this fun Stage Show, 4 metre long Trixie the Giant T-Rex will appear and parents can take their photo with her as a memento of the day.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 February. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation
The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/p>\n

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is the last day before (catholic) lent and on that day other countries celebrate carnival, in Ireland the highlight of debauchery was to eat…pancakes, before the 40 days of food limitations during lent. It is a relatively rare coincidence that Ash Wednesday and St. Valentine’s Day fall on the same day and there is no real connection or contradiction unless you want to create one. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Ash Wednesday is the first day of lent for catholics and on this day you are not meant to eat meat and you are meant to fast.<\/a><\/p>\n

St. Valentine’s Day on the other hand is the day when many couples feel obliged to go out for dinner. I always strongly recommend against it IF you want good food and good service. Instead you could go on the day before or after and your restaurant of choice would be less packed, the price would possibly be lower (because some restaurants only have set menus on Valentine’s Day), the food choice would be wider and the service will be much better. Well, that is my LOGICAL assessment. But as we know, logic goes out the window on St. Valentine’s Day. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

You might also know that a piece of St. Valentine allegedly is in Dublin?
Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846) gave the remains<\/a> of Saint Valentine to the Carmelite “Our Lady of Mount Carmel” church at Whitefriar Street. It consists of some bones and some of his blood as far as we know.But as with all relics of Saints, you can never be sure. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although more than 24,000 people in Dublin were identified as either ‘boarders’ or ‘lodgers’ in the 1911 census, they are largely absent from the pages of history. This workshop considers the city\u2019s lodging phenomenon at the turn of the twentieth century. The term lodger encompassed a huge variety of people, including new migrants, single adults of limited means and fairly wealthy individuals without family protection. Their hosts were similarly varied. Reviewing key online sources, this workshop will be of interest to social and family historians.<\/a><\/p>\n

Are we booming or busting? – The confusion about the “current financial climate”
<\/strong><\/p>\n

A friend posted a notice from a small business in Dublin on Facebook. The business (the name or sector is not relevant for this post) closed its doors on 31 January and the explanation for the closure started with “due to the current financial climate”. Interestingly, that business was in the same part of Dublin where a 3-bed apartment on Daft.ie has a rental price tag of EUR 3,800 per month and it was not a million miles away from a number of areas in Dublin, where the pubs are booming like mad<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If we talked about a place far away from our world, we would wonder what is going on, we would be puzzled!! Why are there these type of significant contradictions happening: One business closes due to “the current financial climate” and other businesses are booming and house and apartment prices are higher than they were before. But it is just around the corner from us, in the middle of our life and neighbour hood. So are we booming or busting?<\/a><\/p>\n

The answer is most likely that we are BOTH in a boom and at the same time still in trouble. There are some companies who are (still) in trouble, some because they were not made or managed to be ever successful and others because the people running them are still in the mindset of “trouble”. But other areas are just ignoring that and it seems to work for them.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “current financial climate” is still in the head of people while at the same time they are prepared to spend like there is no tomorrow. It also seems that we have a new split in society with one part being still – at least partially – in the bad financial climate, while the other part is riding the crest again. Nearly all formerly bankrupt or at least “NAMA-treated” developers seem to be back in buying mode! :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? It leaves us in a weird and eerie twilight zone of a “boom-bust”, where the emotions about the economic situation might influence us more than the actual facts.<\/a><\/p>\n

It’s a pity about that small business, because without a doubt dreams and hopes were dashed, replaced by disillusionment and despair.But I would also guess that that small business had made it through harder times a few years ago. Maybe they just reached the point were they couldn’t take it any longer?<\/a><\/div>\n
