Is this the beginning of the end? – Faceboo Changes and the Dublin Event Guide<\/h2>\n

Facebook was one of the most important ways for me to spraed the word about the Dublin Event Guide in recent years. With nearly 75,000 Fans, the community on Facebook grew much bigger than the 24,000 e-mail magazine subscriber list and it is a more interactive community. BUT the downside is that on Facebook every Page owner is totally dependent on Facebook’s algorithm to reach people unless you can and are willing to pay to get your message in front of your audience. I know (small!!) companies who spend more than EUR 2,000 per month on Facebook ads, but that will never happen for the Dublin Event Guide.<\/a><\/p>\n

So we are dependent on organic reach and that collapsed last week! Mark Zuckerberg had announced it about two weeks ago. They want to let us see more updates from our friends and less from Pages. That sounds good initially, but then you realise that Facebook is NOT a charity, so they will still need to make money through Pages paying for ads. I therefore don’t believe that “We now care for you, dear users!” line. It’s as believable as when Michael O’Leary from Ryanair says that he cares about Ryanair customers!<\/a><\/p>\n

But the bottom line stays the same: Pages will be shown MUCH less…unless you pay. The Dublin Event Guide page’s daily post reached lately approx. 10,000-15,000 per day and on the day after the algorithm change, this dropped to just above 1,400. So that is a dramatic change.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you don’t see the daily posts anymore, go to the Page, then make sure you have clicked on LIKE. Then click on FOLLOW and find “SEE FIRST”. When you have enabled that, you will see every daily Dublin Event Guide post. Also please tell your friends about it, because I will probably not get to reach them anymore. Quite annoying, but that’s the downside of Facebook! THEY control you! E-Mail Marketing is the only reliable way forward!<\/a><\/p>\n

Taxi Drivers of Change – Taxi Drivers and Aware<\/h2>\n

The mental health organisation Aware and is training taxi drivers to become “Drivers of Change”. 1 in 10 people in Ireland will be affected by depression at some point in their lives and since taxi drivers talk a LOT to many people, the programme will give prepare them to deal with customers with problems a lot better. The goal is to fight against the stigma against mental health in Ireland. <\/a><\/p>\n

Vatican tries to ban former President Mary McAleese from conference – Doh!<\/h2>\n
\n

Cardinal Kevin Farrell from Dublin, the most senior Irish person at the Vatican tried to ban former president Mary McAleese from the conference “Why Women Matter”, organised by “Voices of Faith” and scored an own goal. The conference was meant to take place in the Vatican and therefore the speakers had to be approved, but Farrell did not give his ok to Mary McAleese’s and two other speakers’ attendance.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Voices of Faith group is trying to get the Vatican to understand that women have the expertise, skills and gifts to play a full leadership role in the church.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mary McAleese was meant to be just a member on a discussion panel, but following the her non-approval, the organisers moved the conference to a location outside the Vatican and made Mary McAleese a keynote speaker.<\/a><\/p>\n

Someone should tell the Vaticanians, that when you are already in a hole, it is advisable to stop digging! :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Food Co-op Markets<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket Square has put a notice on their website that following an “incident” on 05 December, the structural integrity of part of the hall that was used for the markets every week and the cafe are not accessible anymore and it seems that means that the weekly markets (Pure Vintage Market, Rumble in the Jumble, Fusion Sunday Market and Dublin Flea Market) will be affected by this. The Flea Market will probably suffer the least because they always used the Green Door Market hall in addition to the Food Co-op hall, but the other markets will either not happen until further notice or will be severely curtailed due to lack of space.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Winter of Heritage”, “Spring into Heritage” and “Summer of Heritage” programes, are a series of free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. So began the social media phenomenon that is Humans of Dublin whose social media pages have over 175,000 followers. The extensive Jacob Biscuit Factory Archive held at Dublin City Library and Archive is thge basis of this exhibition that explores all aspects of the factory\u2019s twentieth century history and its impact on lives of Dubliners. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 February. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation
The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/p>\n

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Super Bowl LII (for 52) is the American Football Final for the 2017 season and it will take place on Sunday evening. The kick-off is at 23:30, but some pubs start the celebration way earlier and the TV programmes start at 23:00 or 23:15.<\/a><\/p>\n

The two teams competing are the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.<\/a><\/p>\n

A number of pubs in Dublin will show the game and I am listing a few of them below if admission is free, but make sure that you check that they will show the FULL game. It will most likely continue until at least 03:00 and that can be a problem for pubs on a Sunday evening<\/a><\/p>\n

Alternatively you can watch the game on BBC1 from 23:15 for free or on Sky Sport Main Event from 23:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to some OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

For years, this event was one of the most popular monthly events with a HUGE amount of people taking part. But since last year, it was more or less terminated for all of us in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.<\/a><\/p>\n

Outside but near to Dublin, you can visit

On 30 June 1922, the Record Treasury next to Four Courts, that contained Ireland\u2019s documentary heritage dating back to the thirteenth century was destroyed in an explosion and fire at the Four Courts in one afternoon. Millions of historical documents accumulatred over seven centuries were wiped out.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Beyond 2022 project is working towards the creation of a new online resource – the Virtual Record Treasury – which will provide a digital reconstruction of the Record Treasury of the Public Record Office of Ireland as it existed in 1922, on the eve of the fire. The Beyond 2022 team is working to assemble a complete inventory of loss and survival of the 1922 fire.<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate the launch of ‘Beyond 2022: Ireland’s Virtual Record Treasury’ project, a panel discussion of leading practitioners will discuss the digital challenge presented by The Archive of the Future, and the opportunities offered by outreach and international collaboration.<\/a><\/p>\n

I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!<\/a><\/p>\n

National Broadband Plan: The wheels are falling off…and so they should!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

A few years ago, the Irish Government decided that every single house in Ireland should get a minimum of 30 Mbit\/s of broadband connection. It is a totally crazy idea (and I will explain why) and it didn’t go too smooth yet with delay after delay. A shortlist of companies that wanted to submit a bid to deliver that National Broadband Plan (NBP) was created already in 2016, but not too much happened. This year now the tender document was meant to be issued so that the shortlisted companies can prepare their proposals.<\/a><\/p>\n

Two companies (Imagine and Gigabit Ethernet) didn’t make it on the shortlist and from three shortlisted companies (Eir, Enet and Siro), Siro (an ESB and Vodafone cooperation) already last year pulled out, which only left Eir and Enet on the list. This week Eir also declared that they are not interested any further and that just leaves Enet. A tender process still has to happen, but with just one bidder, it is virtually certain that Enet will win (as long as they fulfill all criteria). And it also means that Enet will be able to charge nearly whatever they want and the government will have to pay it. But that means YOU and I are paying it!<\/a><\/p>\n

So that NBP process is already broken and can’t be fixed anymore. Abandoning the whole plan and starting from fresh should be the ONLY option!<\/a><\/p>\n

How did it come to that mess?<\/a><\/p>\n

It all started with the nonsensical promise of 30 Mbit\/s to every house in Dublin. That is a stupid promise for soooo many reasons. Firstly, it assumes that the broadband service is NEEDED for something. Decades earlier a Universal Service Obligation (USO) forced Telecom Eireann (now Eir) to provide a landline to every house in the country no matter what the cost would be. At the time Telecom Eireann was owned by the government and a landline was seen as a requirement for people who lived in the middle of nowhere to stay in touch and to be able to notify emergency services if something happened. The price was high! Tax payers paid thousands to reach remote houses and it was never the house owner that had to pay, but he\/she paid the same as someone in the City Centre where phone lines would be just a few metres away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The successor to landline services are now broadband services and people living in the middle of nowhere therefore expect that they should now get broadband services for NO extra price. But imagine this scenario: You decide (free choice!) to live in the remotest place in Co. Kerry and you came up with the genius idea that setting up a haulage\/transport company for customers on the East Coast of Ireland is the perfect business for you. The streets are not great where you live, but because you decided that trucks need to get to you FAST, you now demand from the government that they will build a motorway to your company. Imagine! Everybody would say you are crazy to expect that and that you chose the wrong place for your company. No taxpayer would agree to pay for essentially a private motor way to you.<\/a><\/p>\n

If it is a ridiculous idea to build a HUGE road to the remotest place, why is it not a ridiculous idea to build broadband services to the remotest places? Sure if people want to pay the full price for it, they can have it. But to expect that all the other taxpayers will pay for their choice to live far away from infrastructure doesn’t seem to make sense. Right?<\/a><\/p>\n

Now, we are not unreasonable people, so let’s give them SOME Internet connection. They should also be allowed to order their goods from Amazon of Bookdepository if they want, sending and receiving e-mails is also ok and checking the news on a website is perfectly fine too. But uploading or downloading huge files or Netflix streaming is really not a basic requirement to live!<\/a><\/p>\n

It could be a requirement for a company, though. but that brings me back to the motorway example: If you need extraordinary infrastructure you either need to pay for it in full or need to go where the infrastructure can be provided in an economically feasible way.<\/a><\/p>\n

Because you are MUCH nicer and more caring than I am, you probably are now wondering how many houses and businesses we are talking about. I am glad you asked! It is around 900,000 (!) connections that were originally in that National Broadband Plan. That’s a lot of subsidised connections!!<\/a><\/p>\n

But then something important happened: When all these delays happened, the mobile phone companies, Imagine and Eir grabbed the opportunity and as fast as lightning (they are usually MUCH slower) they built infrastructure to the easy reachable customers. So now more than 300,000 easy reachable customers are already with services and with the low hanging fruit gone, the remaining 500k-600k connections are the ones that nobody really wants because you can’t build a business on that basis.<\/a><\/p>\n

And suddenly Eir’s withdrawal from the shortlist makes sooo much sense. They don’t want the scraps, the left-overs, the bottom of the barrel. In addition Eir knows, that if Enet wins the contract, Enet will HAVE to use Eir infrastructure to reach these 500,000, so Eir wins ANYWAY. Smart, right!?<\/a><\/p>\n

So why does the government not stop that silly National Broadband Plan? Because the 500k connections could be around 1mio voters! In addition they seem to think that Ireland depends on the small businesses in the middle of nowhere to remain competitive in the European\/international market.<\/a><\/p>\n

And what would make sense? It would be necessary to draw lines! That means that not EVERYONE will get broadband, but if you live to far away from a city or at least town, then you are on your own! Then the promised\/guaranteed bandwidth should be reduced to what is needed, not what would be nice to have. (Nobody NEEDS 30 Mbit\/s!) And finally, the National Broadband Plan should be re-started because one really important way to reach any remote locations is via mobile phone data services, so mobile phone service providers HAVE to get involved and the government has to entice them enough to get involved.<\/a><\/div>\n

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
