During the week the Facebook algorithm shock has happened, so we lost LOTS of Dublin Event Guide supporters because they can’t see the daily posts anymore. NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra & Choir – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

On 28 January the NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra & Choir will perform a concert in the Mahony Hall of the Helix as a final concert of their UK & Ireland concert tour. They will perform works from Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Whitacre, Whitwell and Riebl.<\/a><\/p>\n

The orchestra has 69 musicians and the choir 42 singers with an average age of 16 years. Together with the Australian orchestra and choir, the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, the Ossia Youth Choir and the Belvedere College Chamber Choir will perform.<\/a><\/p>\n

The French Embassy, the Institut Fran\u00e7ais Paris and the IFI are presenting the first “Night of Ideas” in Ireland, a worldwide event that celebrates the stream of ideas between countries, cultures, topics and generations.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event will start with the Irish premiere screening of the documentary “The Russian Revolution Through its Films (L\u2019utopie des images de la R\u00e9volution russe)” selected at the 2017 Mostra of Venice with director Emmanuel Hamon and scripwriter Thomas Cheysson in attendance. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the Power of images featuring director Emmanuel Hamon, screenwriter Thomas Cheysson, Dr Ailise Bulfin of UCD and Donald Clarke of the Irish Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

The film will be screened in French with English subtitles, the discussion is in English.<\/a><\/p>\n

Is this the beginning of the end? – Faceboo Changes and the Dublin Event Guide<\/h2>\n

Facebook was one of the most important ways for me to spraed the word about the Dublin Event Guide in recent years. With nearly 75,000 Fans, the community on Facebook grew much bigger than the 24,000 e-mail magazine subscriber list and it is a more interactive community. BUT the downside is that on Facebook every Page owner is totally dependent on Facebook’s algorithm to reach people unless you can and are willing to pay to get your message in front of your audience. I know (small!!) companies who spend more than EUR 2,000 per month on Facebook ads, but that will never happen for the Dublin Event Guide.<\/a><\/p>\n

So we are dependent on organic reach and that collapsed last week! Mark Zuckerberg had announced it about two weeks ago. They want to let us see more updates from our friends and less from Pages. That sounds good initially, but then you realise that Facebook is NOT a charity, so they will still need to make money through Pages paying for ads. I therefore don’t believe that “We now care for you, dear users!” line. It’s as believable as when Michael O’Leary from Ryanair says that he cares about Ryanair customers!<\/a><\/p>\n

But the bottom line stays the same: Pages will be shown MUCH less…unless you pay. The Dublin Event Guide page’s daily post reached lately approx. 10,000-15,000 per day and on the day after the algorithm change, this dropped to just above 1,400. So that is a dramatic change.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you don’t see the daily posts anymore, go to the Page, then make sure you have clicked on LIKE. Then click on FOLLOW and find “SEE FIRST”. When you have enabled that, you will see every daily Dublin Event Guide post. Also please tell your friends about it, because I will probably not get to reach them anymore. Quite annoying, but that’s the downside of Facebook! THEY control you! E-Mail Marketing is the only reliable way forward!<\/a><\/p>\n

17 bus routes will be diverted away from College Green<\/h2>\n
\n

Because the Luas trains are getting longer to deal with the demand and because all the buses and taxis cause delays on the College Green stretch, 17 bus routes will be diverted from this Monday. Inexplicably, it was decided. however, not to remove taxis from that route (yet).<\/a><\/p>\n

The buses 25, 25a, 25b, 25d, 37, 39, 39a, 70 and 25x, 27x, 32x, 33x, 39x, 41x, 51x, 66x, 67x will be affected and more details about the new route can be found in this RTE.ie articl<\/a>e.<\/p>\n

Supermacs’ announces six new outlets – A foreigner asks WHY? ;-)<\/h2>\n

As you know, I didn’t grow up in Ireland and never lived in the countryside, maybe that is the reason why I don’t get Supermacs?<\/a><\/p>\n

They announced the creation of 400 jobs<\/a> (Great!) and the opening of six (!) more outlets, which will bring the number of outlets in Ireland to a whopping 114! That is a great achievement, but I just don’t get how and why. Now I have to admit that I only once ate in Supermacs, so what is it that gets people excited about them?<\/p>\n

To me, they seem like an odd mush-up of McDonalds, KFC, Subway and your local (Italian) chipper and I then wonder if it is a “Jack of all trades and master of none” scenario or if their food is better than the one from the mentioned competitors.Why would you go to Supermacs and not go to the others?<\/a><\/p>\n

Three (!!) stores will open in Cork, and the others are in Balbriggan Co Dublin, Donegal town and Naas, Co Kildare. So maybe only country (especially from Cork) people get it? ;-)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The “Winter of Heritage”, “Spring into Heritage” and “Summer of Heritage” programes, are a series of free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. The extensive Jacob Biscuit Factory Archive held at Dublin City Library and Archive is thge basis of this exhibition that explores all aspects of the factory\u2019s twentieth century history and its impact on lives of Dubliners. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Temple Bar Tradfest 2018 will take place from Wednesday 24 Jan until Sunday 28 Jan. There are non-free and free events taking place, but it is sooo difficult to identify from the website what is free that I gave up frustrated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The general rule is that all headline events<\/a> are not free. All “Frontline” events were free but are nearly all sold out (Interestingly, you had to pay EUR 2.99 to get a free ticket. :-O).<\/p>\n

So what is left? The Music Trail<\/a> is left! 15 pubs in Temple Bar take part and will have gigs during the Tradfest that are free.<\/p>\n

The Family Concerts<\/a> in the Printworks building at Dublin Castle on Saturday (12:00-17:10) and Sunday (12;00-16:20) are also free.<\/p>\n

And if you have kids, look through the list of Tradkids events<\/a> and you will find a few free ones.<\/p>\n

There is also a Tradfest App that might help you, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out.<\/a><\/p>\n

As far as I can see, there is NO outdoor stage with music, maybe that is the Family Concert at Dublin Castle. I guess it is just too cold for playing instruments outdoor .<\/a><\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation
The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/p>\n

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Temple Bar Tradfest 2018 will take place from Wednesday 24 Jan until Sunday 28 Jan. There are non-free and free events taking place, but it is sooo difficult to identify from the website what is free that I gave up frustrated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The general rule is that all headline events<\/a> are not free. All “Frontline” events were free but are nearly all sold out (Interestingly, you had to pay EUR 2.99 to get a free ticket. :-O).<\/p>\n

So what is left? The Music Trail<\/a> is left! 15 pubs in Temple Bar take part and will have gigs during the Tradfest that are free.<\/p>\n

The Family Concerts<\/a> in the Printworks building at Dublin Castle on Saturday (12:00-17:10) and Sunday (12;00-16:20) are also free.<\/p>\n

And if you have kids, look through the list of Tradkids events<\/a> and you will find a few free ones.<\/p>\n

There is also a Tradfest App that might help you, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out.<\/a><\/p>\n

As far as I can see, there is NO outdoor stage with music, maybe that is the Family Concert at Dublin Castle. I guess it is just too cold for playing instruments outdoor .<\/a><\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. William Butler Yeats died on the 28 January 1939. This tour of the exhibition “Yeats: The Life and Work of William Butler Yeats” looks in particular at his great contribution to the Irish Cultural Revival. This documentary “Terramatta” tells the story of the diary that Vincezo Rabito (born in 1899), a semi-literate man from Sicily, wrote during his life. His memoir, written partly in the Sicilian dialect with semicolon instead of spacing, is an amazing and unique description of life in Italy and Sicily during the years of the two world wars and the economic growth. The documentary is a collection of historical footage of the Istituto Luce, original pages of the diary of Vincenzo Rabito and other private footage.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you are NOT a celt or pagan, then you are like most of us for whom the Seasons now are defined by their meteorological aspects and based on Meteorology, 01 February is NOT the first day of Spring, instead, we will start that season on 01 March. One more silly rule is gone: Alcohol on Good Friday
<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday the Dail approved<\/a> a change to the Intoxicating Liquor Act, that will remove the ban that stopped pubs, restaurants and off licenses from selling alcohol on Good Friday. It was an outdated law from 1927, from a time when Ireland was still VERY catholic, but it is a clear example where the Catholic Church still had a bigger impact on the state than it should have. This is the one and only reason why – in my opinion – this law change is a good change.<\/p>\n

We don’t need a nanny state that tells us what to do based on church rules! No, I am NOT suggesting that now you should have alcohol on Good Friday! You should drink or not drink based on YOUR preferences, not based on a state or church rule (but if you prefer not to drink because of a church rule that is important to you, that is also 100% fine!).<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, too much alcohol is consumed in the Irish society, but a ban on Good Friday will not solve that problem and picking on that one day doesn’t make sense. I am totally in favour of strategies that reduce the consummation of alcohol through education, but not through a nonsensical Good Friday ban.<\/a><\/p>\n

There is now only one other day left when the selling of alcohol is forbidden and that is Christmas Day. Some think if the selling of alcohol was allowed on that day, then suddenly pubs and restaurants wouldn’t give their staff a day off anymore. But if that is the driver. then we should have a law that regulates if pubs, restaurants and off-licenses are allowed to open or not, not a regulation “through the backdoor” via an alcohol selling ban.<\/a><\/p>\n

I will continue to stay away from alcohol on Good Friday (not for religious reasons, but just because I don’t drink much anyway), but I am 100% in favour of a lifting of the ban. Is it this time me who is odd!?!?! :-)<\/a><\/div>\n

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
