Last weekend was mad! I worked on the Dublin Event Guide on Thursday night and Friday night without sleep. I had to be at some other job early on Saturday morning and time was tight, but I just managed to get the Dublin Event Guide out to you in time. In the evening, I was invited to a birthday and could not NOT go. I got back not too late, but I just crashed. I didn’t have a drop of alcohol, but I don’t know how I got into bed. I functioned perfectly the whole day, but the moment my brain got permission to switch off, it did that INSTANTLY. :-O<\/p>\n

NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra & Choir – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

On 28 January the NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra & Choir will perform a concert in the Mahony Hall of the Helix as a final concert of their UK & Ireland concert tour. They will perform works from Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Whitacre, Whitwell and Riebl.<\/a><\/p>\n

The orchestra has 69 musicians and the choir 42 singers with an average age of 16 years. Together with the Australian orchestra and choir, the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, the Ossia Youth Choir and the Belvedere College Chamber Choir will perform.<\/a><\/p>\n

The French Embassy, the Institut Fran\u00e7ais Paris and the IFI are presenting the first “Night of Ideas” in Ireland, a worldwide event that celebrates the stream of ideas between countries, cultures, topics and generations.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event will start with the Irish premiere screening of the documentary “The Russian Revolution Through its Films (L\u2019utopie des images de la R\u00e9volution russe)” selected at the 2017 Mostra of Venice with director Emmanuel Hamon and scripwriter Thomas Cheysson in attendance. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the Power of images featuring director Emmanuel Hamon, screenwriter Thomas Cheysson, Dr Ailise Bulfin of UCD and Donald Clarke of the Irish Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

The film will be screened in French with English subtitles, the discussion is in English.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dealz to add clothes “sub-shops”<\/h2>\n

The discount shop chain Dealz, which is the Irish branch of the British Poundland, has announced that they will add a cheap (they might have used another word! ;-) ) clothes line to their products and will put concession outlets in 30 Dealz stores. The clothes are EUR 5 or less and are consequently competing with a price point that is Penneys’ battle ground, but Dealz claims that they don’t want to compete with Penneys.<\/a><\/p>\n

I like Dealz and regularly buy stuff there (e.g. stationary, batteries, phone charger cables etc), but I am not impressed with this new addition, because it will probably use up a lot of space in the shops and that means the other products will have to reduced. So very selfishly, I would vote against another discount clothes line, what’s your opinion?<\/a><\/p>\n

Storm names and Weather Panic – the hilarious side!<\/h2>\n

It seems that for the last 2-3 years, Met Eireann is a lot more “panick-y” than before. Suddenly we have Yellow, Orange and Red weather warnings where before it was just the usual daily forecast of “gale force winds”. And every time Met Eireann announces a warning – which seems to be twice a week or even more frequently – the newspapers and TV stations fall over each other in sensationalising the upcoming weather Armageddon.<\/a><\/p>\n

Another new things it that storms are now named to make them more identifiable. Many of you might remember Hurricane Charley in 2004, which was one of the strongest hurricanes ever to the USA, causing $13bio of damage. Or Hurricane Katrina that destroyed New Orleans in 2005. But what about Storm Fionn, a bit of a blowier weather than usual?<\/a><\/p>\n

It now has emerged that even the meteorologists don’t agree with each other and that one storm might have four different names when it passes through Europe. On panels the history of the factory, the workers, the products it produced and its role in Irish life are described.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out the history of the Jacobs cream-cracker, who was the marketing genius to develop the concept of Jim Figgerty, and how did major national and international events from World Wars to 1916 Rising impact the business, customers and staff.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is in the Vaults of Dublin City Hall and will run from December until March. It will be closed from 22 December until 03 January 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n

How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Temple Bar Tradfest 2018 will take place from Wednesday 24 Jan until Sunday 28 Jan. There are non-free and free events taking place, but it is sooo difficult to identify from the website what is free that I gave up frustrated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The general rule is that all headline events<\/a> are not free. All “Frontline” events were free but are nearly all sold out (Interestingly, you had to pay EUR 2.99 to get a free ticket. :-O).<\/p>\n

So what is left? The Music Trail<\/a> is left! 15 pubs in Temple BAr take part and will have gigs during the Tradfest that are free. There is also an IMRO Conference<\/a> on Thursday if you are a musician\/in the music business. The Live at the Hub<\/a> gigs during the day on Thuirsday and Friday are also free.The Family Concerts<\/a> in the Printworks building at Dublin Castle are also free.<\/p>\n

And if you have kids, look Throughout he list of Tradkids events<\/a> and you will find a few free ones.<\/p>\n

There is also a Tradfest App that might help you, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out.<\/a><\/p>\n

As far as I can see, there is NO outdoor stage with music, maybe that is the Family Concert at Dublin Castle. I guess it is just too cold for playing instruments outdoor .<\/a><\/div>\n

The Temple Bar Tradfest 2018 will take place from Wednesday 24 Jan until Sunday 28 Jan. There are non-free and free events taking place, but it is sooo difficult to identify from the website what is free that I gave up frustrated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The general rule is that all headline events<\/a> are not free. All “Frontline” events were free but are nearly all sold out (Interestingly, you had to pay EUR 2.99 to get a free ticket. :-O).<\/p>\n

So what is left? The Music Trail<\/a> is left! 15 pubs in Temple BAr take part and will have gigs during the Tradfest that are free. There is also an IMRO Conference<\/a> on Thursday if you are a musician\/in the music business. The Live at the Hub<\/a> gigs during the day on Thuirsday and Friday are also free.The Family Concerts<\/a> in the Printworks building at Dublin Castle are also free.<\/p>\n

And if you have kids, look Throughout he list of Tradkids events<\/a> and you will find a few free ones.<\/p>\n

There is also a Tradfest App that might help you, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out.<\/a><\/p>\n

As far as I can see, there is NO outdoor stage with music, maybe that is the Family Concert at Dublin Castle. I guess it is just too cold for playing instruments outdoor .<\/a><\/div>\n

Temple Bar Tradfest 2018<\/h2>\n

The Temple Bar Tradfest 2018 will take place from Wednesday 24 Jan until Sunday 28 Jan. There are non-free and free events taking place, but it is sooo difficult to identify from the website what is free that I gave up frustrated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The general rule is that all headline events<\/a> are not free. All “Frontline” events were free but are nearly all sold out (Interestingly, you had to pay EUR 2.99 to get a free ticket. :-O).<\/p>\n

So what is left? The Music Trail<\/a> is left! 15 pubs in Temple BAr take part and will have gigs during the Tradfest that are free. There is also an IMRO Conference<\/a> on Thursday if you are a musician\/in the music business. The Live at the Hub<\/a> gigs during the day on Thuirsday and Friday are also free.The Family Concerts<\/a> in the Printworks building at Dublin Castle are also free.<\/p>\n

And if you have kids, look Throughout he list of Tradkids events<\/a> and you will find a few free ones.<\/p>\n

There is also a Tradfest App that might help you, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out.<\/a><\/p>\n

As far as I can see, there is NO outdoor stage with music, maybe that is the Family Concert at Dublin Castle. I guess it is just too cold for playing instruments outdoor .<\/a><\/div>\n

During the week something happened that was somewhat unexpected in the context of the Eighth Amendment development when Michael Martin (Fianna Fail leader) and Leo Varadkar (Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach) both made their opinion known about their stance on the Eighth Amendment decision. There is something odd about that clause in the constitution and it could also be seen as odd that Micheal Martin made a U-turn about it. So I started writing about it for this section. No, not about the pros and cons of abortion, only about the pros and cons of that clause in the constitution.<\/a><\/p>\n

But once I had it written, I decided not to publish it here. The discussion is just too polarised and too emotional to include it here, even if I am NOT taking sides on abortion but only look at the situation of the Eighth Amendment. So no This is Odd this week, cause I used up my allocated time for that article.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you absolutely want to know what I wrote, you can find it on my personal blog<\/a>, but if you feel very strongly about that clause in the constitution, remember, that I am a foreigner who has NO CLUE and just do NOT click on any link that might be in this paragraph.<\/p>\n
