MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I hope you and your families will have a great Christmas!<\/a><\/p>\n

As you can imagine, the Dublin Event Guide is a good bit “thinner” this week, but there are still events happening, just not so many. ;-) I have used the opportunity to add some other bits of information especially for people that are not from Ireland and that are not spending Christmas with locals. Lily O’Brien’s sold to Polish company for 40mio<\/h2>\n

A very successful and also very popular Irish company from Kildare has been sold this week: Lily O’Brien’s, the manufacturer of fine and tasty chocolate pralines was sold to a Polish Company for the nice amount of EUR 40mio.<\/a><\/p>\n

The good news is that – at least for the moment – the existing management will continue running the company and Ann O’Brien who started it in 1992 will stay on as advisor and also the jobs will stay in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. But these things can change faster than you think, so watch this space!<\/a><\/p>\n

Lily O’Brien is obviously in the food sector where the rules are different, but imagine the same rules applied as for Internet companies:
The crazy Snapchat valuation was $29bn in 2016 when they had a revenue of only $366mio. That is a factor of 79! If Lily O’Brien’s was in the same sector, the sales price could have been 2.37bn because they had a 2016 revenue of 30mio. I’d say the previous owners would have loved that price!<\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids could be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

In previous years the biggest Outdoor Christmas Market in Dublin took place around the CHQ Building. In some years it was a very good attempt, in other years less so.<\/a><\/p>\n

This year, the George’s Dock platform was turned into a Christmas Party venue with big tent. Outside the party bookings, you won’t get access to the platform, but next to the CHQ Building a few Christmas Market stalls form the entrance to the party venue and access to the Apr\u00e8s Village is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are 12:00-19:00 and the opening days are 07-10+14-23 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

The focus is very much on selling the EUR 16 Euro per person tickets for the party venue “Apr\u00e8s Lodge”, so I am not sure yet how good the Christmas Market component “Apr\u00e8s Village” is, but I will check it out at the next opportunity.<\/a><\/div>\n

The market area is quite small along the “Metals”, which is from the Dun Laoghaire’s MarineRoad near the City Hall towards the LexiCon library along the Queen’s Road, along the harbour, but at least it is an outdoor Christmas Market, something Dublin can’t manage to organise! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Christmas Eve – What’s happening?<\/h2>\n

Christmas Eve is an extremely busy day and then an oddly quiet day.<\/a><\/p>\n

The City Centre and the Shopping Centres will be absolutely packed (and there will be a significantly larger proportion of men than women becoming increasingly irate and buying stuff that shouldn’t be bought by anyone :-) ) and the hectic increases throughout the day until around 15:00-16:00, when the shops in the City Centre start to close. Some shopping centres are open until 18:00, but that is it then! NO more shopping for Christmas 2017!<\/a><\/p>\n

An unusual calm starts engulfing the City Centre once the shops are closed and only pubs remain open to take in the shoppers that want to end the day with Christmas Drinks. Then the Christmas Masses start with Children’s Masses around 18:00 and then for the grown ups at 20:00, or “midnight” mass at 22:00 in some cases even at midnight. <\/a><\/p>\n

Pubs stay open for another bit (until around midnight) but things are a lot quieter than on a normal evening.<\/a><\/p>\n

….and then Christmas starts!!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids could be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours are provided with four tours on Friday and Sunday over the Summer and a reduced schedule in the winter. From 01 October until March 2018, the only tour is on Sundays from 12:00 and 20 places are available on that tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Important: If you want to come to the Christmas Eve mass, make sure that you arrive early. It will be standing room only, so if you arrive after 19:30, be prepared that you might have to stand. <\/a><\/p>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known gospel choirs in Ireland will give you a chance to experience a mass with a difference. Christmas Day – What’s happening? <\/h2>\n

Christmas Day is the main day of Christmas in Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

For Families with children, the day starts VERY early. Most kids can’t wait to check if Santa Clause brought them some presents (and ate the cookies and drank the milk or the Guinness that they left for him). So morning time is present time for the kids. (In families with no kids or older kids the presents are exchanged just before the Christmas Dinner.)<\/a><\/p>\n

For others the day starts with a traditional Sea Swim at the Forty Foot in Sandycove, south of Dun Laoghaire or in Portmarnock. Sounds freezing cold? Well, the water should be around toasty 9 degrees, that is not THAT bad. You can watch the lobster red swimmers emerging from the waters.<\/a><\/p>\n

More sports after that? Then the GOAL runs could be for you. They happen in numerous locations (https:\/\/www.goalglobal.org\/events\/event\/goal-mile) and are an easy on mile run for charity GOAL. One of the biggest ones will be in Phoenix Park at the Papal Cross from 10:30-12:00. It is not a free event, but a charity event on Christmas Day does make a lot of sense.<\/a><\/p>\n

What next? Visiting friends and family while the turkey is simmering in the oven and then back home for the Christmas Dinner around 15:00. After that flaking out with a full belly in front of the TV? Or playing some games? Too much food, too much alcohol, but it is all part of Christmas. :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

If you are a tourist in Dublin, you will NOT like this day! Dublin’s hospitality is on “on ice” for a day. Nobody is properly looking after tourists and I think it is unfair not to warn them. If you are looking for food in town, go to a Spar or Centra because you won’t find a restaurant open. The good news is though, that these extraordinary circumstances only last for a single day. Things will improve on 26 December.<\/a><\/div>\n

The second day of Christmas holidays is St. Stephen’s Day on 26 December. In many countries this is a proper holiday, not so in Ireland! Shops in the City Centre and all shopping centres open on St. Stephen’s Day, many for the full day from 09:00-18:00. The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids could be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids could be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

How do foreigners find out about Irish culture?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Culture” is a complex thing! Dublin has a very multi-national population and at some point many of the people from other countries will go to their home country and will bring a piece if Irish culture with them or might even be seen as experts on Irish culture. But have they really lived in Ireland?<\/a><\/p>\n

This is not an Ireland-specific problem, but the Brazilian community in Dublin spends most of the time with other Brazilians, the Polish community sticks together, the Chinese community does the same and I could go on. By not living with Irish people, however, this means that the international community will never really get in contact with Irish culture.<\/a><\/p>\n

They don’t know what the Late Late Toy Show means in Ireland. Or the Rose of Tralee. They don’t have experienced Christmas Day in an Irish family. They have never heard of Horlicks and when they hear “Irish stew”, they think it should contain Guinness or other new fandangled things.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now you sure could say that nobody needs to know about about the Rose of Tralee or Horlicks or the Child of Prague because even among the Irish younger population these things lose relevance. But it still means that there are parallel universes in the same country where all people involved THINK they know what Irish culture is, but they don’t!<\/a><\/p>\n

At Christmas, Brussels sprouts are obligatory here! Gammon\/Ham and Turkey BOTH are needed to have a proper Irish Christmas Dinner. But does a Brazilian or Polish or Chinese or German who lives here but has never lived in and with an Irish family know these things?<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe there should be “culture classes”? ;-) To make sure that at least the stories are told, even if they other nationals won’t get a chance to live it?!<\/a><\/p>\n
