When you receive this newsletter it is time to look forward to the weekend and what a busy and varied weekend this will be. ;-) Quite a number of events are taking place this weekend and for me the most important will certainly be the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. It is one of the best, if not THE best festival of the year. Sure there are other festivals and I am not ignoring the Electric Picnic, Oxegen and Castle Palooza, but they are by far not as family friendly and all-age-group-friendly as the Festival of World Cultures AND they are not free. But, hey, if Dun Laoghaire is too far for you, then you will find lots more to do.

Oh, I need your help again! No, I am not asking for money again. :-) Money is always welcome, but something happened last week that had not happened for a long time and you can help with it. Normally at least 30 – 50 people join our Dublin Event Guide Community every week, but last week it was the first time less than that. :-O So, I need you! Keep telling your friends and colleagues about the Event Guide! Win brownie points with them by introducing them to the weekly guide of all free events in Dublin. They can simply sign up by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. And if you want to give them something OR if you work in a company, study in a University, are near a shop with a blackboard or have any other opportunity to spread the word, maybe these flyers/tear-off-posters help:
http://www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
http://www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
Thanks for all your help! I will definitely pay you back. Not with money, but with lots of information about free events. ;-)

————-
Thanks to the wonderful people Niamh K., Jennie R., Semin S., Gavin H. and David G. who helped me this week with their donations. I couldn’t do it without you!

If you can help – and help is much appreciated – you can donate through PayPal or via a secure credit card transaction on http://www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, Mike G, Andrej G, Deirdre R, Vanessa O’L, Chris McK, Frank B, Dolores P, Cornelia K, Cathy A, Orla C, Kevin McC, Steph G, Wanda J, Siv M-J, Niamh niS, Gwen H, Jasmin T, Ian O, Eva C, Will P, Gráinne P, Caroline R, Elizabeth F, Suzanne B, Adele G, Jack C, Keeva H, Mairead MacM, Niamh G, Siobhan C, Jackie B, Penny O’D, Kathryn K, Aidan G, Ciara G, Deirdre L, Stephen D, Mary Q, Donald P, Aidan C, Julia Sch, Isak R-B, Sharon O’S, Brajan V, Nancy O’D, Zelie McG, Niamh K, Jennie R, Semin S, Gavin H, David G and www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.flamencoindalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges). To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! All I am asking for is 1 single Euro per month (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). For a whole year that is less than 3 pints or less than 2 gin+tonic or similar. I know times are tough for many and if 12 Euro per year is too much and you ALREADY have given up going to the pub, paying for taxis etc then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you but please pay it forward (i.e. do something good for someone else – it doesn’t have to cost money)! However, if you can spare two drinks per year to help with the cost for this weekly newsletter that helps you save so much more than EUR 12, then please help with your contribution.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page http://www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______________________________
______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
ANTARCTICA WITH NEW HORIZON EXPEDITIONS
– Join Irish Adventurers on Expedition Cruise – Special Price Offer-
New Horizon Expeditions, an Irish company, are inviting you to travel to Antarctica in January 2010 on a fantastic trip. Festival of World Culture, Heritage Week and sooo much more! It is very difficult to give you advise on what to do this week and I would love to divide myself into lots of pieces and do a bit of everything. But since that is not possible, I unfortunately will have to give the Heritage Week a miss and instead will go on Sat or Sun in the morning to the People’s Photography Exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green and will then spend the rest of Sat AND of Sun in Dun Laoghaire. There are sooo many concerts, workshops, demonstrations, markets etc that I will just stay in Dun Laoghaire. Hopefully the weather will hold out. I would love to go to the Which Course Expo, but I will probably not manage.
If you are in Dublin, have a look at the Comedy event in Shebeen Chic on Sunday evening!
On Monday I recommend the Career Boot Camp in the National College of Ireland for all people that are looking for a job.
On Tuesday both the “Green Drinks” and the Plan Ireland event sound very interesting. I will be from Wednesday to Friday at the Ultimate Marketing Seminar in the D4 Hotels (former Jury’s Inn) and am looking forward to it. Cathy didn’t just get what she was looking for, but even got more! (Interesting what you can achieve if 4700 people conspire together for a common goal.). Cathy now has not one, but two venues and as a Thank You to all of you, she is offering some great prices for a competition. There will be two lucky winners and the winners will have to be female because the FITT Bootcamp is only for women, but if you are male you certainly are allowed to enter the competition if you want to surprise a woman in your life in case you win. ;-)
One winning reader will get a free membership (3 months valued at EUR 190) for the IT Blanchardstown indoor bootcamp classes (Monday & Wednesday @ 18:00) and another reader will get a free membership (3 months valued at EUR 190) for the Corduff Sports Centre Classes (Monday & Thursday @ 20:00).
Details for the FITT Bootcamp (for ladies only) can be found at http://www.fittpt.com. Did you see Liberty Hall flashing and “shining”? If you did, you probably were very surprised. If you didn’t, you will hear and see a lot more about it: As part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, Liberty Hall will be turned into a HUGE low-resolution screen for YOUR animations. The launch was on Wednesday and that’s why the lights were turned on already, but all will go live on 24 Sept. Until then you can create and submit your own animations. They are just re-starting after a summer break and will meet next time on the first Wednesday in September (02 Sept) in the Goose pub off Gracepark Road at 20:00. It is an informal gathering of people who love to read and are willing to maybe read books they wouldn’t normally consider and you are more than welcome to join. The areas covered are Glasnevin, Whitehall, Artane & Drumcondra and for details you can contact Brian on 087 2363282.

POVERTY REQUIEM – CALLING ALL SINGERS TO TAKE PART
Do you want to take part in a massive choral performance for UN World Poverty Day? STEPHEN’S GREEN
I have been at this last year and it is definitely worth a visit: The 2009 People’s Photography exhibition will take place on Sat 29 + Sun 30 Aug from 10:00-18:00. Over 200 photographers will show their work/art/hobby on the railings (i.e. the fence) of St. Stephen’s Green. The photographers come from many different countries and last year I was a little surprised that a very large proportion was Polish. If you are interested, photographers are happy to sell their work directly to you and you might go home with a wonderful piece of art for your living room. :-) The event is run on a non-profit making basis and after expenses are paid, donations are made to two charities (Simon Community and the National Council for the Blind). Over two days there are an incredible amount of free concerts, dance performances and workshops. There will be lots of delicious food and other boots that sell goods on a street market. It is virtually impossible to describe the whole festival here and you should definitely have a look at the website and then just go. ;-) I will be there on Saturday and Sunday and will probably spend most of the time at the main stage in Newtown Smith Green (between the Dun Laoghaire Pier and the 40 Foot). If you want to meet me during the two days, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FOWC as the subject. Force Majeure is commonly used in relation to natural disasters (‘acts of god’ such as hurricanes or earthquakes) or war, strikes or riots for example. In suggesting these events are due to circumstances beyond our control, it relieves us from the responsibility of our actions. The artists in this show all explore how natural and man-made power operates and reveal some of the mechanisms and connections that make us, and the world we have built, operational. www.thelab.ie

REGULAR MONDAY EVENTS
* Every Mon from 20:00-22:00 in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, 78 Grafton Street, the recently-formed music collective the ‘Lazy Band’ is playing roots, trad and folk songs from Ireland, England, America and anything else they like. The lecture is part of the 9th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky and is entitled “What is Light?” Lecturer is Leo Enright. Leo Enright, a broadcaster on Space Exploration and Science, explores the history of Ireland’s sometimes tenuous connection with luminosity
– while naming and shaming some modern big wicks. He will focus on the importance of continuing public access to dark skies, especially during the present ‘Golden Age’ of astronomy, whilst noting that historically Ireland has sometimes been defined by the absence of light – why else would the Romans have called it Hibernia?
The event will take place on Wed 16 September 2009 at 19:00 in the Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Admission is free but places are limited. For booking please visit http://shop.ria.ie/shop/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=22&cat=Event%2BRegistration

______________________________
______This is odd!!______________

DRINKS PROMOTIONS – YES OR NO?
It is always amazing to observe how the organisation that is allegedly trying to get us all to “drink sensibly” operates. If you know or realise that this organisation, called MEAS (Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society) has been set up and is funded by the drinks industry (to protect the industry against the set-up of a state body which would be a lot less sympathetic) it makes more sense, but is still astonishing. During the week MEAS decided on two complaints that they had received. In one case a pub offered pints from 15:00-19:00 for the not very reduced price of EUR 4. This is the period where there was hardly any business in the pub and they wanted to attract a few more people (mainly pensioners). Because the price reduction is time limited, MEAS decided that it was encouraging irresponsible or immoderate consumption, such as binge-drinking, drunkenness or drink-driving. Fair enough, you might think: Happy Hour reductions are not allowed so MEAS did the right thing. I agree!
But then who can explain this: A night club in Stillorgan ran a promotion that offered all drinks on every Saturday during a whole month for just EUR 2. In my naivety I would think that this much more “encouraged irresponsible or immoderate consumption, such as binge-drinking, drunkenness or drink-driving”. Alcohol throughout the whole day, for a really low price? Yep, definitely a problem. But what does MEAS say? They decided: EUR 2 for the whole day is NOT a problem, but EUR 4 for 3 hours IS a problem. This is not just odd, it is totally irresponsible and condemnable! Somebody said to me MEAS are muppets and I can see the point in this statement.
Interestingly the MEAS decision makes a lot of sense: The nightclub in Stillorgan needs to get people to survive, the pub on Baggot Street just wanted a handful more people. So let’s “sacrifice” our friend who can easily live with the punishment. We will be seen to do a good service and then let’s make sure that our other friend in Stillorgan can continue to encourage people to consume alcohol irresponsibly to ensure his survival. Shocking stuff, but it does make sense when you keep in mind that the alcohol industry and the pub owners run MEAS.
http://www.meas.ie/page.php?intPageID=591
http://www.cheapeats.ie/2009/08/26/cheaper-beer-promotion-banned/

—————–
If you are bored this week, then there is no helping you. ;-) It is probably the busiest weekend of the year, so make the most of it. Weather? Hey, we are in Dublin! So, yes, it will rain. But with umbrellas and rain gear for the – hopefully temporary – showers you will be well prepared and can still enjoy all the cool events this weekend.

Have a great weekend,

–Joerg

*********************************************
For donations please go to http://www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
**********************************************
You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail.
