Huge Facebook Challenges and more!<\/h2>\n

Facebook have changed their algorithm again and where my daily post reached more than 12,000 people last Sunday, Three days later, the daily post then reached 1,200. That is a shocking drop and means that Facebook is more or less useless to reach you and to spread the word. So now the focus has to be back on this weekly e-mail magazine because that is the only reliable way to reach you. BUT I still haven’t cracked the challenge of getting this mail out to you before 09:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

I have my work cut out! :-\/ And I have decided that I will stop putting the daily posts on Facebook once the average daily reach drops below 800 people. It is just not worth the work anymore at that point. Sorry!<\/a><\/p>\n

Another big challenge are the finances. Donations are kind of drying out at the moment and I haven’t yet decided how much debt I will carry before I will have to close down the whole Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but there has to be a cut off somewhere. I will keep you posted when it is decided.<\/a><\/p>\n

Holidays vs Dublin Event Guide<\/h2>\n

If you are a Dublin Event Guide reader for a while, you will know that I am not letting holidays or other things stop me from compiling and sending the weekly e-mail magazine to all 24,000 subscribers. Usually I plan holidays around the Friday\/Saturday deadline and also work while on holidays on the Event Guide to get it to you. 543 weeks now without a single interruption.<\/a><\/p>\n

But on 22 November I am going (for the first time in the last 10 years) on holidays that interfere with TWO weekends and I am currently considering what to do. It will either a mini-version of the weekly magazine OR there might even be NO magazine at all. I am looking for your input on how to handle it, so drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FAR FAR AWAY as the subject line.<\/a><\/p>\n

I will be away from 22 November until 01 December, which means that I would have to do a full Dublin Event Guide while away and with all the frustrations with Facebook and donations, I am considering the option of NOT sending a newsletter at all. I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.<\/a><\/p>\n

Prints and drawings by German artist K\u00e4the Kollwitz (1867-1945) will be shown for the first time in the National Gallery of Ireland. \u201cK\u00e4the Kollwitz: Life, Death and War\u201d will give the Irish public an opportunity to discover this important woman artist who created almost 300 prints, around 20 sculptures and some 1,450 drawings during her long career. 38 prints and drawings from the rich collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Germany will be shown. Kollwitz\u2019s work reminds us of the horror and ultimate futility of war. <\/a><\/p>\n

The National Print Museum is inviting to their exhibition “The Wild Apple Press”.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Wild Apple Press is an American private press, printing mostly stories and imprints about Ireland and by Irish writers. The Press grew out the \u2018book arts\u2019 program at the University of Alabama in the mid-1970s, initially printing broadsides and ephemera. All type is handset and printed letterpress by Irish-American printer Jim Wilder in his print shop in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.<\/a><\/p>\n

Works from the Press have been included in collections at: Royal Irish Academy Library; National Library of Ireland; Russell Library, Maynooth University; Early Printed Books, Trinity College Dublin; Burns Library, Boston College; Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University; Catholic University of America; and Special Collections, University of Delaware.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition showcases contemporary fine printing and samples of the worldwide revival of letterpress printing.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours are provided with four tours on Friday and Sunday over the Summer and a reduced schedule in the winter. From 01 October until March 2018, the only tour is on Sundays from 12:00 and 20 places are available on that tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

“K\u00e4the Kollwitz – Images of a Life” is a documentary by director Ralf Kirsten (93 minutes, GDR 1986, German, with English subtitles). It is a cinematic portrait of German artist K\u00e4the Kollwitz (1867-1945). The film traces her artistic stimulus and relates it to the political events of the 20th century.<\/a><\/p>\n

“K\u00e4the Kollwitz was 47 years old and already a well-established artist in Germany and abroad when Peter, her youngest son, volunteered to join the German army in World War I – two weeks later, he was killed. This painful tragedy changed Kollwitz\u2019s life and art forever. She became a radical pacifist, and through her art she reflected on her son and on the meaning of war. After signing a petition against the Nazis, she was excluded from the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and her art was labeled \u201cdegenerate.\u201d Lonely and sick, Kollwitz spent the last days of her life near Dresden and died at the age of 78, before the end of World War II.”<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out a range of information on how to make your home warmer and cosier and cut down on your energy bills. There will be demonstrations of the “Home Energy Saving Kit”, which is available to borrow free-of-charge from all Dublin City Public Libraries.<\/a><\/p>\n

The kit contains six practical tools to give you an idea of how much energy you are using at home every day. You can also check out the interactive lighting display, which shows you the difference between old, traditional light bulbs and more energy efficient CFLs and LEDs.<\/a><\/p>\n

Find out a range of information on how to make your home warmer and cosier and cut down on your energy bills. There will be demonstrations of the “Home Energy Saving Kit”, which is available to borrow free-of-charge from all Dublin City Public Libraries.<\/a><\/p>\n

The kit contains six practical tools to give you an idea of how much energy you are using at home every day. You can also check out the interactive lighting display, which shows you the difference between old, traditional light bulbs and more energy efficient CFLS and LEDS.<\/a><\/p>\n

Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin on 30 November 1667 and is the author of Gulliver\u2019s Travels, the most popular Irish book ever written. To celebrate Swift\u2019s life and legacy, Dublin City Public Libraries will run a programme of talks, exhibition and events as part of a citywide programme for Swift 350 Festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

In a series of illustrated talks Brendan Twomey will describe and celebrate the complexity of Swift\u2019s life, his personality and works unfolding the story of a clergyman, philanthropist, and writer. In addition Enda Leaney, Senior Librarian will give a brief overview of the Dublin City Library & Archives\u2019 extensive Swift Collections, including first editions of Swift\u2019s works, illustrated children\u2019s editions, and rare items relating to the life and work of Jonathan Swift, including Wood\u2019s Halfpenny.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Modern architecture in Ireland reached a high point in the early \u201960s and one of its most celebrated figures was Robin Walker. Robin studied under Le Corbusier and later worked alongside Mies van der Rohe in Chicago. Upon his return to Ireland he became a key agent in the shaping of the emerging modern nation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Looking again to Dublin\u2019s streets which he has so faithfully recorded in earlier works (James Gandon, A Life; Alive, Alive Oh!), S\u00e9 Merry Doyle follows Simon Walker, a quarter of a century after Robin\u2019s death, as he explores the legacy of his father\u2019s work. The film allows Walker\u2019s buildings to speak for themselves, taking us with Simon in his search for Robin\u2019s architecture of place. Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) US radical political economist David M. Kotz will talk about the Russian Revolution, 100 years since it took place in 1917.<\/a><\/p>\n

He is Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Distinguished Professor of Economics at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and he wrote the books “Russia’s Path from Gorbachev to Putin: The Demise of the Soviet System”, the “New Russia (2007)”, and “The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Capitalism” (2015).<\/a><\/p>\n

A short book entitled “Organiser: Aspects of the life and work of Kevin McMahon”, edited by Scott Millar and Cian McMahon, will also by launched on the night.<\/a><\/p>\n

The end of the Circus …as we know\/knew it!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t know when I was at a circus the last time. It must have been when I was 10 years of age or younger and I don’t know either if it was once or twice that I was at a circus, but it was definitely not more often.<\/a><\/p>\n

So, I am clearly not a mad Circus fan and no Circus could build their business on people like me. But it did make a big impression on me. I remember clowns, and jugglers and a round sandy arena, but I also remember tigers and lions and elephants and possibly monkeys.<\/a><\/p>\n

Thinking back, it was the animals and the clowns that impressed me most. I didn’t know if the animals were treated appropriately, but I was 10 and it wasn’t the first time that I had seen animals in cages or on leashes, so it didn’t concern me hugely. Since my circus visit back then, I have heard about mistreated animals, but I also have heard about circuses making huge efforts to look after the animals well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now it has been announced<\/a> that from January 2018 the use of wild animals in circuses in Ireland will be banned and I am in two minds about it.<\/p>\n

Obviously I am not supporting or condoning the abuse or bad treatment of animals (“wild” or non-wild!), but at the same time I remember the visit to a circus as a hugely positive and educational experience. I also wonder why only “wild” animals will be banned and if these “wild” animals are still that wild? What about a tiger whose parents and grand-parents and great-grand parents all were part of a circus. Is that still a “wild” animal? Or is it a “domesticated” animal. And why are ponies and dogs seen as different type of animals. They once were wild as well, I guess. And mistreating them is also not acceptable. We are training dogs with no hesitation to do tricks for us, but there is objection to train formerly wild animals.<\/a><\/p>\n

Would it no have been an option to work on ensuring that no circus mistreats animals? I am clearly no expert in this area, but I am wondering.<\/a><\/div>\n

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to http:\/\/www.dublineventguide.com<\/a>, where they can subscribe.
