I am back in Dublin and life continues as normal, although I have another holiday coming up due to a wedding invitation and I am REALLY looking forward to it. More about that later! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

The events calendar is taking a little breather now in early November before the Christmas events start and they will be here a LOT sooner than you think. But “a little breather” doesn’t mean that you will get bored. There is still lots to do every week and if every you are not sure what to do one week, then go to the good old reliables like National Museum, National Gallery, Science Gallery etc and re-discover them!<\/a><\/p>\n

I will release this week’s Dublin Event Guide again in two stages. The website and smartphone app and Facebook Page will be updated close to 11:30 and the mail will be sent when I have added another 10 or so events for during the week.
UPDATE: I added nearly 30 (!!!) more events since 11:30. BUT the problem is that this week’s newsletter is so much delayed that it is no use anymore. HOPEFULLY you saw the Facebook announcement and were able to use the online version of the preliminary edition. I am trying to find the balance between sending time and completeness. But maybe I will just have to drop events and prioritise the sending time over the amount of events? What do you think? Apologies for the delay!!!!! <\/p>\n

Financially I am getting into a tricky situation. Last week the donations reached EUR 30, so that means EUR 40 were left over of the bill amount from October and the amount to reach in November is now EUR 280. This is a fairly big amount and the money has to be found before the end of November!! So PLEASE help if you can!!! There are plenty of events happening, but no headline event. Well, the Dublin Book Festival is happening, but nearly all free events are booked out by now, so that offers not much anymore. The summer events are over, Halloween is also gone, now the next event series will be Christmas, but you will have to wait another week or two for that. YES, it is THAT close!! Clowns Without Borders celebrates its 10th year in Ireland with this special event. All funds raised will go towards their upcoming tour to Iraq in Spring next year to bring laughter and joy to those who have been affected by war.<\/a><\/p>\n

Professional Singer and Vocal Coach Joan Shields is running a full day workshop in singing techniques entitled “Release Your Voice”. Bewley’s Cafe has re-opened<\/h2>\n

It only took close to 3 years and 12 mio, but since last Wednesday, Bewley’s Cafe in Grafton Street is open again. Only the ground floor opened for now. The first floor will follow in January and in March the Theatre will open as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is good that it is back and didn’t become a Starbucks like too many other places in Dublin, but it remains to be seen if it will still have the old Bewley’s Charm or if it will become another “coffee factory”. Instead of the original 180 seats, the new cafe will have 500 (!!) seats and will need to make a HUGE amount of money to a) pay the rent and b) get the massive renovation cost back.<\/a><\/p>\n

Campbell Catering is running Bewley’s after it bought the Cafe business from the Bewley family in 1986. The Cafe in Grafton Street was originally owned by the Bewley’s family but was then sold and leased back to get cash into the company. The cash is most likely gone and the accountants\/advisors that suggested that mad strategy are also probably long gone, but a rent of close to 1.5 mio per year is still there and is crippling the company. So just to pay the rent, the business needs to make a profit of 4,000 per day. Add running costs and staff costs and “raw material” cost and a proportion of the renovation cost and you can see that these 500 seats need to make a LOT of money. <\/p>\n

Let’s hope that it will work out, otherwise it might be another Starbucks. :-(<\/p>\n

Instead of Jazz&Blues, there will be mini-bedrooms!<\/h2>\n
\n

JJ Smyth was one of Dublin’s most popular Jazz & Blues live music venues for many many years. But life keeps moving and sometimes in dramatic ways.<\/a><\/p>\n

Brian Smyth was running the venue after he took over from his father (JJ) and turned the first floor into the live music venue in the late 1980s. It was the No 1 venue for Blues and Modern Jazz. But in 2016 he and his family decided to sell the pub and Brian had planned to focus on promoting music. Unfortunately he suddenly became ill<\/a> earlier this year and died on 22 June, only 47 years old.<\/p>\n

Less than a year earlier, in August 2016, one of the regular performers at JJ Smyth, outstanding Irish Jazz guitarist Louis Stewart had died and now the whole venue will be closed down as a music venue and a piece of (recent) music history of Dublin will come to an end.<\/a><\/p>\n

There was some hope that the buyers of the pub, Kateo Investment (owned by Edward and Elaine Cawley), would continue the live music tradition in the venue, but now submitted planning documents to Dublin City<\/a> that indicate that the pub will continue to operate on the ground floor and will have a lounge on the first floor, but a big staircase and lift will be where the stage was and therefore it will be its end as a music venue.<\/p>\n

The staircase and lift will lead to the upper floors where 19 bedrooms for short-term accommodation will be newly built. The bedrooms are quite small at 10-14 sqm, but with an extension of the building from 4 floors to 6 floors will be squeezed in above the pub floors.<\/a><\/p>\n

It’s a pity that JJ Smyth’s is going, but like Brian Smyth and Louis Stewart, we will all have to go and so will the things that we are currently passionate about.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Who is faking news about the traffic in Dublin? NTA or Dublin Chamber?<\/h2>\n

In an article in TheJournal.ie\/Fora.ie<\/a>, Killian Woods describes that the College Green pedestrianisation has experienced a set back because An Bord Pleanala, the planing authority who need to assess and agree to the plans, wants more information and more time. In the article he outlines that the NTA, Dublin Bus and local business owners were concerned the pedestrianisation would affect business.<\/p>\n

In that article he refers to a survey Dublin Chamber carried out that seems to contradict the NTA’s findings about the bus journey times after the bus lane alterations on the North Quays. The NTA says that some bus journeys are 45% quicker now, but Dublin Chamber only found 2% of respondents said there was an improvement of their commute time. Somebody is wrong here!<\/a><\/p>\n

And as far as the College Green situation is concerned, the battle will continue for another while. I expect that the pedestrianisation will happen eventually, but there will be more delays. The Luas works and the closure of College Green for cars that is already in place for quite some time will either already have had negative impact on businesses or not. The pedestrianisation will not change much, it will just make the temporary closure eternal.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Wild Apple Press is an American private press, printing mostly stories and imprints about Ireland and by Irish writers. The Press grew out the \u2018book arts\u2019 program at the University of Alabama in the mid-1970s, initially printing broadsides and ephemera. All type is handset and printed letterpress by Irish-American printer Jim Wilder in his print shop in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.<\/a><\/p>\n

Works from the Press have been included in collections at: Royal Irish Academy Library; National Library of Ireland; Russell Library, Maynooth University; Early Printed Books, Trinity College Dublin; Burns Library, Boston College; Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University; Catholic University of America; and Special Collections, University of Delaware.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition showcases contemporary fine printing and samples of the worldwide revival of letterpress printing.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation
The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/p>\n

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Four history experts, discuss Dublin’s rich historical past. Historian and writer Donal Fallon recently co-wrote “Come Here to Me: Volume 2 \u2013 More Unexplored Dublin Histories”. Historian and walking-tour guide John Gibney wrote “Dublin: A New Illustrated History” that describes the social, political, cultural and architectural past through anecdotes about personalities, goings-on, buildings, literature and song over the centuries. Aileen O\u2019Carroll is the manager of the Irish Qualitative Data Archive and recently co-wrote “The Dublin Docker: The Dockers and Stevedores of Dublin Port”, exploring Dublin\u2019s industrial life which was once the heartbeat of the city. Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Exhibits are for example
+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation
The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/p>\n

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours are provided with four tours on Friday and Sunday over the Summer and a reduced schedule in the winter. From 01 October until March 2018, the only tour is on Sundays from 12:00 and 20 places are available on that tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

This lecture is part of a series entitled “Beyond the Book of Kells: The stories of eight other medieval manuscripts from the library of Trinity College Dublin.”<\/a><\/p>\n

In this second talk of the series, Professor Simon Horobin from the University of Oxford will discuss TCD MS 212. This manuscript contains what is perhaps the great medieval English poem, William Langland’s Piers Plowman, an astonishingly rich and searching exploration of what it takes to live rightly in a society corrupt and corrupting. Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. “Concussion in sport \u2013 what is the current state of play?” is a talk about the risk and facts about sports-related concussion.
Barely a week passes without some concerning incident regarding this injury and it is very difficult for athletes and parents of athletes to decide if it still safe to take part in some sports.<\/p>\n

In this lecture, Steve Broglio and Mike McCrea will talk about the current research into concussions and its effects. Both are international experts in sports concussion and were part of the expert panel that formed the 2016 Berlin Consensus Statement that informs all clinicians how to manage concussion. They are also leading a study with colleagues examining 40,000 athlete participants, the biggest concussion study worldwide and are visiting Dublin as expert advisors to the Trinity College Dublin Concussion Research Group, including the Leinster Rugby programme.<\/a><\/p>\n

Veronica Heywood will talk about her return to her Hong Kong Childhood. She was born in Melbourne in 1942, at a time when her father, Graham Heywood, Assistant Director of the then Royal Observatory, was imprisoned in Shamshuipo POW Camp. After the war, the family was reunited and returned to Hong Kong in 1946. Her father served as Director from 1946-1956. Veronica lived at Tee Man Toy (the Observatory) from 1946 to 1953, which she describes as \u201can idyllic childhood\u201d. In 1953, she was sent to school in England, where she graduated from Central Saint Martin\u2019s Art College, London. Since 1968, she has lived in Ireland, where she works as a landscape painter and portraitist and is a guardian of the natural environment. Her paintings have been exhibited in Boston, Atlanta, Athens, Wales, Hampshire, Belfast, Dublin and in Hong Kong.<\/a><\/p>\n

Catalonia mess spills over to Dublin<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many years ago I met an elderly man from Catalonia who regularly left his home to spray political graffiti in favour of Catalan Independence on house walls in the town he lived. He was a nice man, but a nutcase at the same time. He did a good few other rebellious things as well. Nothing too big, but still his own bit of civil disobedience.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the time I read some information about Catalan Independence and it just didn’t make sense to me. In an age where working together is 100 times better than working against each other, it doesn’t make sense to declare independence in one small part of a big country even if that part at the time is relatively wealthy. It doesn’t make sense in Belgium, not in Germany (Bavaria would love to be independent) or in Catalonia and it certainly also extends to the nonsensical Brexit. We don’t have to agree with the status quo, the current rules of engagement and we should improve these rules, but the only future the internationally extremely small countries in Europe have is if they will work together.<\/a><\/p>\n

So, Catalan independence doesn’t make sense, BUT I think their current rules of engagement with the rest of Spain has to be looked at and should be improved. They called the referendum some weeks ago and it would have been really interesting to see a democratic result of that referendum not the skewed result that it had. But I was SHOCKED when I saw some of the pictures and videos about how the Spanish police acted against their own PEACEFUL Spanish neighbours. An absolutely unacceptable case of unjustifiable brutality. The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has proven that he is a totally incompetent politician and suddenly I had some sympathy for the Catalan fight for independence. I still think it is ludicrous, but if that is the treatment you get from the central government, then you just HAVE to rebel to a degree.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is nonsense to jail Catalan politicians and to accuse them of rebellion. A dialogue and a compromise has to happen! It can’t be that the rest of Spain will milk Catalonia, but it also doesn’t make sense for Catalonia to split from the rest. Madness on both sides!!!<\/a><\/p>\n

But now the madness has reached us in Dublin!<\/a><\/p>\n

John Lyons and Tiny McVeigh from People Before Profit have put a motion forward in Dublin City Council to raise the Catalan flag on top of City Hall for a month to show Dublin’s solidarity with Catalonia. And a protocol meeting of Dublin City Councillors voted in favour of this suggestion with 7:5 votes. On Monday 04 December the whole council will now vote about the Catalan flag in City Hall.<\/a><\/p>\n

Without a doubt the Spanish government is shivering in their boots with fear. Imagine if Dublin raises the Catalan flag, it might mean that Spain will have to give Catalonia the independence they want, because Dublin says so!! TOTAL nonsense!<\/a><\/p>\n

But if councillors will vote for it, we will have to ask WHY only one month?! Maybe we could replace the Dublin flag with the Catalan flag for good? And why only the Catalan flag, I am sure there are other parts of the world where people are oppressed. The Palestinian flag was already flying over City Hall. But there are more countries or parts of countries that should get our support. Next John Lyons will suggest to fly the Cork flag over City Hall to support Cork’s quest for independence? Odd people in the City Council! :-O<\/a><\/div>\n
