Hi all!<\/p>\n
The weeks are just flying and as soon as one Event Guide is finished, the next one needs to be written. I can hardly keep up with all the other spare time activities I am pursuing, but when it comes to the Thursday night the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) gets highest priority again.<\/p>\n
I have to admit that sometimes I wonder if I shouldn’t spend my time differently because approx. 25 hours per week is a lot. But then I get a few supportive mails and a few donations again and that drives me on again. ;-) I am still looking for this big sponsor that allows me to look after the Event Guide in a bit more professional way, but until I have found him\/her, I will continue as well as possible for a hobby.<\/p>\n

\nAbout 1.5 years ago I was searching for free events and by coincidence came across this seminar. I had no clue what it was and the claims sounded a little dubious. A free 3-day seminar where I am taught things that have the potential to change my life? I thought “There must be a catch!” But I went to the seminar and can certainly say that my life was influenced in a big and positive way. The seminar was attended by approx. 400 people and the atmosphere was hugely uplifting. In the beginning it takes a little while until I got comfortable with the American way of positivity and keeping the energy up. It certainly is different to the European ways ;-) but I can certainly say that there was not a boring moment over these three days. You learn how to set goals and how to pursue your goals in a better way. You identify the things that stop you from achieving the goals and are going through lots of exercises to overcome the limitations and to achieve your goals in a more effective way. All is based on and around NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and I find the whole area hugely interesting.
\nThe seminar is completely free and there is no catch, but obviously there “ain’t such thing as a totally free lunch” so the price you have to pay is the same that you are prepared to pay when you watch TV: To get lots of good and free content, you have to live with some advertisement. The 3-day seminar is a promotional event where many courses are promoted. Chris Howard is the person running the “Breakthrough to Success” seminar and he is impressive himself, but after going through the 3-day seminar twice, I decided that I want to learn more and did one of the non-free courses. BRILLIANT stuff! No, it is not cheap, but I entirely enjoyed it the first half of the course and will do the second half in October. At the end of the course I will be qualified as a NLP Master Practitioner and will have a Master qualification in Ericksonian Hypnosis (that’s conversational hypnosis, not the stuff that you see at stage shows).
\nIs the free seminar for everyone? Hmmm, that is a question for which there are LOTS of answers. I think it is for everyone, but not everyone is ready to go through it. If there are things that you want to achieve and you just can’t get there, then it is for you. In the 3-days you will learn so much that you can continue working on your goals with a totally different motivation and energy. But you have to take part properly. If you are not sure if something that is a little challenging will agree with you, then don’t go, but wait until you literally are prepared to do ANYTHING to achieve your goals. The seminar will be in Dublin again from 11-13 September (Friday-Sunday) and the question I am asked most of the time is if you HAVE to go on the Friday (i.e. take a day off work). I learned a number of languages and missing the first third of the language course wouldn’t have been a good start to learn a language well, so if you can’t go to the course on Friday, maybe leave it and go when you can attend all three days. \nThe European Young Professionals (EYP) networking group regularly organises interesting events. Some are standard meet-ups and some are events that have a learning element or introduce you to different, new, exciting experiences. Most events are free, but for some – the ones with the learning experienced and with the name “The Academy” – an admission charge is unavoidable. Claire from EYP contacted me this week to tell me about their next event. It is an “EYP -The Academy” event called “Latin Quarter” and is an evening of Latin dance, food and drink, on Thursday 27 August 2009 at the Button Factory in Temple Bar. Stunning salsa & tango shows by professional dance groups “Afrimania” and “Tango Ireland”, followed by a fun introductory dance class, and lots of free tasty tapas courtesy of Pintxos, Temple Bar will be available. \nDoes the widespread censorship in China upset you? I believe very much in right to express your opinion and to share information freely and it does upset me what happens in China. Censorship of any sort is a hugely disturbing antidemocratic process. I am not suggesting that all types of content should be readily available, illegal content should not be available but it has to be stopped by pursuing the source and should never be done by an intermediary that is not qualified to assess the legality of the content.
\nThe bad news: Eircom is not much better than the Chinese government! It emerged this week that from 01 Sept Eircom will (without a court order!) block Internet access to www.thepiratebay.org<\/a>, the world’s biggest torrent website. The Pirate Bay does not contain any illegal content, but information on the website can be used to find content that is copyright protected but as well non-protected content. It is a sad day for Irish civil liberties when censorship creeps in again!

There was a problem with some credit cards, but it should be working now. So just try again if you didn’t get the registration confirmation the last time. \nVodafone has started listening to customers! :-O A discussion forum on their website was the first step, the www.missionred.ie<\/a> initiative followed where customers can vote for new features (a good idea but Vodafone are approaching not in the best way, but that is a different story. :-) ) And now there will even be a Vodafone Customer Forum on 27 Aug.

\nA very much under-promoted event is the Dublin Sand Sculpture Exhibition. I only cam across by coincidence in a blog and didn’t see it myself yet. Ruaille Buaille in South King Street (underneath the Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre), better known by the previous names Major Tom’s or Down Under, has closed after the parent company went into liquidation. This event reflects the psychology of a modern professional artist and the multiplicity of roles inherent in operating as a visual artist. Through experimentation it analyses typical activities necessary to disseminate artworks to an audience. These include proposal making, profile emphasis, C.V. building and professional codes of conduct. Traditionally the keeper of a museum, this project examines the curators\u2019 role and relationship to the artist as a creator of opportunity.<\/p>\n
\n‘The Red Thread’ by Paki Smith and ‘Drawings from India’, a collection of anonymous Indian drawings comprising yantras, spiritual diagrams, sketches of mythological birds and figures, and astrological charts will be on show. This 8 piece band play the music of all the great soul artists, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Charles Wright and many more. The lead singer is amazing and all the band members are hugely talented and experienced. \nFinally it is around the corner: Next weekend the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures, the highlight of the festival season every year (at least for me, that is!), will take place. The programme is announced and in some locations you can find a small brochure that contains all events. The brochure has the picture of a bollywood-type dancer on the front and the colour is a kind of turquoise. I picked up mine in the Dublin Tourism office in Suffolk Street. There are some workshops and if you want to take part in them you might have to pre-book, so have a look at the programme. The lecture is part of the 9th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky and is entitled “What is Light?” Lecturer is Leo Enright. Leo Enright, a broadcaster on Space Exploration and Science, explores the history of Ireland\u2019s sometimes tenuous connection with luminosity
\n– while naming and shaming some modern big wicks. He will focus on the importance of continuing public access to dark skies, especially during the present \u2018Golden Age\u2019 of astronomy, whilst noting that historically Ireland has sometimes been defined by the absence of light – why else would the Romans have called it Hibernia?

\nTraditionally Ireland is biggest greeting card sending nations in the world. I remember years ago how some people were nearly able to wall paper all the walls in the living room with Christmas Cards. It always amazed me how many cards were sent (and how little often was written on the cards :-) ). In recent years, it seems that text messages and e-mails have replaced the sending of cards in many cases. This week I found out why the greeting card manufacturers and shops need a lot worse economic times to wake up. I was in Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre (and it seemed that even more units were abandoned than last time I was there!) and since I needed a Greeting Card where an e-mail was not appropriate, I went to the Greeting Card Shop near the Ticket Master outlet at the Grafton Street entrance of the shopping centre. The cards were not great and I didn’t find any pricing codes – I thought! One card – not very spectacular had the pricing code 7.20 on the back and I was wondering what the code meant when I realised that 7.20 meant that the unimpressive card was priced at EUR 7.20 !!! This is MADNESS! We are talking here about a lousy piece of cardboard that has some unimaginative message printed on it, which will be read once and then the card will be thrown away and they want to charge me EUR 7.20??? Not a chance! I am not sure if that is a “special” price in this shop or if I didn’t buy a card for such a long time that I didn’t realise the massive price hike, but I rather make the card myself or maybe instead have a look at http:\/\/www.cardshop.ie\/<\/a> I found this website by chance when writing this piece and it seems to offer an interesting service: You can customise the two pages in the inner section of the card and you can even include a picture. The cards are typically EUR 2.00 and postage to you costs EUR 0.52. Clever idea!<\/p>\n
\nI don’t know about you, but the fact that August is already coming to an end again, is slightly shocking. If you feel the same just make sure you make the most of every weekend and enjoy Dublin and its events. ;-) Next week will be a Super busy weekend, so keep a little bit of energy!<\/p>\n
