The Bram Stoker Festival is taking place from Saturday until Monday. There are a few free events and many non-free events and you can find out all details at http:\/\/www.bramstokerfestival.com\/<\/a> The main free event are the Macnas Parade on Monday and the Stokerland Fun Fair on Saturday and Sunday. <\/p>\n

Ryanair delays carry-on bag rule changes<\/h2>\n

Ryanair will change the rules for carry-on baggage significantly as I had reported before, but the rule change has now been postponed to 15 January instead of 01 November to give passengers “more time to familiarise themselves with the changes”.<\/a><\/p>\n

From that day non-priority customers will only be allowed to bring one very small bag on board an will have to check the second piece of hand luggage in. However, that second piece will not cost anything (YET!).<\/a><\/p>\n

Customer who paid for priority boarding will be allowed to bring two pieces of hand luggage (one big and one small) on board.<\/a><\/p>\n

Check in baggage will cost less (EUR 25 instaed of EUR 35) and the checked baggage allowance will increase to 20kg.<\/a><\/p>\n

Prints and drawings by German artist K\u00e4the Kollwitz (1867-1945) will be shown for the first time in the National Gallery of Ireland. \u201cK\u00e4the Kollwitz: Life, Death and War\u201d will give the Irish public an opportunity to discover this important woman artist who created almost 300 prints, around 20 sculptures and some 1,450 drawings during her long career. 38 prints and drawings from the rich collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Germany will be shown. The National Print Museum is inviting to their exhibition “The Wild Apple Press”.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Wild Apple Press is an American private press, printing mostly stories and imprints about Ireland and by Irish writers. The Press grew out the \u2018book arts\u2019 program at the University of Alabama in the mid-1970s, initially printing broadsides and ephemera. All type is handset and printed letterpress by Irish-American printer Jim Wilder in his print shop in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.<\/a><\/p>\n

Works from the Press have been included in collections at: Royal Irish Academy Library; National Library of Ireland; Russell Library, Maynooth University; Early Printed Books, Trinity College Dublin; Burns Library, Boston College; Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University; Catholic University of America; and Special Collections, University of Delaware.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition showcases contemporary fine printing and samples of the worldwide revival of letterpress printing.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations

+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin City Marathon is a yearly event that for many years took place on the bank holiday Monday but is now moved to the Sunday of the October bank holiday weekend. There will be approx. 40,000 (!!!) participants and it is a massive operation to get everything running as smooth as it does year after year.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event is not free and registration has closed a long time ago because it was full so soon, but the free part is that you can support and cheer on the runners either along the route or at the start or finish line…and many do that every year. The start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the finish is at Merrion Square and the course route takes the runners all over Dublin and you can find the map via this site here<\/a>. The race will start at 09:00 and because some participants will run and others will jog and others again will walk, it will continue for many hours.<\/p>\n

Please note that there will be partial and total road closures throughout Dublin and give yourself additional time if you need to drive somehwere.<\/a><\/div>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think\/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

+ 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017
+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world
+ Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster)
+ a selection of Manuals for Civilisation

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the last bank holiday before Christmas! A somehwat surprising thing about bank holidays in Ireland is that the number of events often doesn’t increase in a bank holiday but instead decreases (because a few regular events might not take place). Today is Halloween, which was originally a Celtic Harvest Festival and is the Gaelic Samhain festival. The word Halloween comes from the contraction of “All Hallows’ Evening” because All Hallows is on 01 November. Because of that contraction some people prefer to write it as “Hallowe’en” (The ‘ is not a misplaced accent, but represents the missing letters in “evening”).<\/a><\/p>\n

Halloween in Ireland is nowadays a festival for grown ups to dress up (like mardi gras\/carnival in other countries) and for kids the dressing up is made even better by the amount of sweets that they can get when they are going around the houses on their “Trick or Treat” loot. If unexpectedly your doorbell rings on Tuesday evening, it is most likely a bunch of kids offering you the deal to either give them treats (sweets) or they will play a “trick” on you. Most people stay on the safe side and buy a “trick” free life with some handfulls of sweets. :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to some OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

For years, this event was one of the most popular monthly events with a HUGE amount of people taking part. But this year, it was more or less terminated for all of us in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. The wrist band distribution on 21 October was postponed due storm “Brian” and ALL wristbands will now be handed out on 28 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

On 29 October the yearly Haunted Forest Walk will take place in Marlay Park. It is a spooky 1.7km walk for parents with children and that event is hugely popular. So much that free admission is only possible with a wristband. The walks will happen between 15:30 and 20;30.<\/a><\/p>\n

Wristbands have to be collected at the Marlay Park Market on 21 or 28 October and half of them will be given out on the first Saturday and the other half on the second Saturday. Once the wristbands are given out (and the distribution already starts at 08:00) that’s it!<\/a><\/p>\n

Wristbands are given out for the exact timeslot of the Haunted Forest Walk and max. 6 can be given out per family.<\/a><\/p>\n

Security Screened Wallets
<\/strong><\/p>\n

The latest security recommendation is to use a Security Screened Wallet that will prevent access to your Credit Card through Near Field Communication (NFC) or RFID while it is in your pocket. Why is this a thing? Well, if you only need to tap your card on a Credit Card reader to pay (Contactless Payment), then a criminal only needs to have a portable Credit Card Reader and needs to get close enough to your card in a packed Luas or train to also be able to take money from you.<\/a><\/p>\n

Credit Card companies say that this is not a risk and the limit to EUR 30 protects you further, but read the TINY print, i.e. the Terms & Conditions and you will see that they are well aware that there are risks and they have a lot of responsibilities put in your court.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tapping your card is convenient, but I never found it a huge challenge to type in my code when I use a credit card. The time you save might be 30 seconds all in and that is really not a convenience game changer.<\/a><\/p>\n

So I never would need to “tap” my credit card and therefore I made sure that it will not even have that functionality. The consequence is that I do NOT need a security screened wallet because no criminal could “tap” my card either against a will.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some say that credit card companies\/banks don’t give you cards that do NOT have the NFC or RFID functionality. But I would have to ask you if you are really certain and if you have not just asked, but insisted.<\/a><\/p>\n

I have cards from 2 banks and a credit card company and none of them has the NFC\/RFID functionality. All I needed to do was ask for cards without it!<\/a><\/p>\n

If your bank refused to give you a card without it, tell the bank that you will then disconnect the RFID antenna within the card and familiarise yourself about the disconnection trick via YouTube clips. Example: https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c9vTvbHgi2M<\/a> You will “damage” the card and the credit card company\/bank might tell you that you are not allowed to do that. Then openly tell them that you will damage the card UNLESS they send you one without the “Tapping” or contactless payment option. Tell me if that worked at dublineventguide@gmail.com<\/p>\n
