Next weekend is Open House on Saturday and Sunday, it is a two day event when some of Dublin’s most interesting buildings are open for your visits. The focus is on the architecture but a lot of other aspects about the use and quirks of the buildings will also be discussed. There will be guided tours in most places. Queueing is required. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend I strongly recommend to go for a walk in the Botanic Gardens and to see the Sculpture in Context exhibition. Weather in Sunday looks ok (dry) and if you don’t go this weekend, you only have one weekend left to see that exhibition. What else? The Busker Fleadh on Sunday. Unfortunately it takes place on Smithfield Plaza, which is the death sentence for any interesting event: Nobody likes Smithfield Plaza. But hopefully the 20 buskers will be good.<\/a><\/p>\n

And I will add one other one. Also one that wasn’t soooo great in previous years in a different location, but hopefully it will be a lot better in Newbridge House: The Spud Fest will take place because on Friday was National Potato Day.<\/a><\/p>\n

New Urban Quarter at Guinness Brewery<\/h2>\n

Diageo announced<\/a> during the week that they now need less space to brew Guinness at St. James’ Gate and that some of the big site in Dublin will be developed into a new Urban Quarter, that will be called “St James\u2019s Gate Quarter”. The whole St. James’ Gate site is 50 acres in size and the new quarter will use 12.6 acres of that.<\/p>\n

There will be commercial, residential, office and public spaces, but no timescales have been announced for the development of the area. They only said that they are currently looking for a development partner and that the development will be phased over a “long period”.<\/a><\/p>\n

We urgently need more apartments in Dublin, so this is a great plan. At some point in the past Guinness\/Diageo had considered to move the brewery to Kildare and when you think about it, it doesn’t really make that much sense to have a factory (= brewery) in the centre of the city. But for touristic reasons it was decided to continue brewing at St. James’ Gate….at least for now.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Audience Required for “Cutting Edge” with Brendan O’Connor and “Know the Score” with Jacqui Hurley<\/h2>\n

Mind the Gap Films are working on a new series of Brendan O’Connor’s Cutting Edge show and they are looking for a live audience for the show. Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n

The space will be divided by age and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomh\u00e1n Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and no booking required. Numbers are limited to 40 people at any one time but you can drop in and out whenever it suits you and as long as there is still space. Children have to be supervised at all times. The event takes place in the Atrium.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 2017 version of Dublin City’s Busker Fleadh will take place on Smithfield Plaza this Sunday. And if we go by this video clip of the 2016 version here https:\/\/youtu.be\/iF7oHfqjni4<\/a> then it can only get better! :-O<\/p>\n

There will be four spots and each busker has 1 hour, which means that 20 acts will take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition the Dublin Circus Project will perform from 12:00-14:00 and three Choirs will also be there (High Hopes Choir 13:50, Sings in the Key of D 14:50 and Sandymount Gospel Choir at 15:50.<\/a><\/p>\n

There is also a Junior Performance Area where the performance slots are 15 minutes long and Facepainting and Balloon Modelling will be provided. Some food stalls will also be there,<\/a><\/p>\n

Smithfield Plaza is never a great place for events like that because it never attracts the crowds events like that should have. Let’s hope that it will be better on Sunday!<\/a><\/div>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Dublin Festival of History runs from 29 September until 14 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 90 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (https:\/\/www.weshare.ie\/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.<\/a><\/p>\n

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 29 September until 14 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 90 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Four Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

Crazy Car Insurance Prices! Why<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Chinese friend who is living in Ireland for many years never had a drivers licence here, but this year he has decided that now is the time to tackle it. His daughter is getting to the age where he can’t pack her on the back of his bike to bring her to school and a “taxi driver” is needed. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

He studied HARD, passed his theory test and got his provisional license. He found a small car that suited him, I think it is a Ford Fiesta and then he embarked on finding an affordable insurance.<\/a><\/p>\n

He was shocked! The first insurance company quoted him a price close to EUR 5,000! :-O He rang lots more and was constantly told that his insurance premium was so high because he didn’t have any experience. He understands that, but unless the companies allow him to drive (and an somewhat affordable insurance is needed for that) he won’t be able to improve. Tricky situation! In the end he found an insurance that “only” wanted EUR 3,500 and he went for it. So from now on, he will be working close to two months every year, just to pay the insurance. He can’t understand that.<\/a><\/p>\n

During the week something happened that will help him to understand a little bit better: A passenger in a car got severely injured and sued the driver who drove the car she was in. The case was settled<\/a> for EUR 5.75 million and THAT is one of the reasons why the insurance premiums are so high.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately this case is not one of these “crazy settlement” cases and I say “unfortunately” because it is easier to get angry about a case where someone gets a scratch and walks away with hundreds of thousands. This case is different!<\/a><\/p>\n

We don’t know why the woman got into the van, but it seems that there is a high probability that she knew that the driver was drunk (three times over the limit!!!) and despite that she most likely didn’t wear a seatbelt. Because of these two things the settlement was a LOT lower (about half) than it could have been otherwise. But the seriously sad thing is that since the accident (3 years ago) the woman is in a vegetative state and is still in hospital.<\/a><\/p>\n

So the cost the insurance will have to pay are HUGE and I assume that the insurance will have to pay everything even if they might be able to claim some small amount back from the driver, but he won’t have nearly 6mio in his back pocket, so they will only get a fraction back.<\/a><\/p>\n

On one hand we can get angry about such a crazily high payment that ultimately has to be paid by all other insured drivers through their insurance premiums. On the other hand we can certainly understand that the woman is NOT in a situation where the insurance money is a nice windfall. The money will be used to modify her home so that she can leave the hospital and then will be needed to care for her for the rest of her life. Without a doubt she and her family would prefer a situation where she wouldn’t need that money. So we can see that sometimes these crazily high premiums are fully understandable, but nevertheless they need to be paid and that is ONE reason for what makes the premiums so high.<\/a><\/p>\n

There is another reason and that is greed or maybe even lies by the insurances. It seems to be certain (and early morning raids have taken place to secure evidence) that the insurances are paying out LESS money for claims than in previous years, but they still claim that the claims grew.<\/a><\/div>\n

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
