I was hoping that I would be able to send this week’s Dublin Event Guide at around 09:30 at the latest, but now it is 11:30 and I am still not finished. So I will have to post it on the website and the smartphone page again and then add some more events before I send the e-mail.<\/a><\/p>\n

Culture in Dublin never stops and sometimes I wonder if I made a mistake when I decided to write about free events. I should have decided to write only about the most expensive events! Discount food markets in Ireland are most popular shops<\/h2>\n

Every month, Kantar Worldpanel provides an update on market share of the different food shops in Ireland and the headline this time – at least on RTE News – is “SuperValu remains largest grocery retailer<\/a>“. This is definitely correct when you look at the market share numbers, but what I find a lot more interesting is that the two discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl are combined the largest food seller in Ireland. They are two separate shops and on one hand you can’t shouldn’t combine their market share. But on the other hand they BOTH have – in contrast to the others – a rather unique approach to selling food, where own branded products is the majority of products.<\/p>\n

The figures are SuperValu 22.1%, Tesco 22.0%, Dunnes Stores 21.6%, Lidl 11.8%, Aldi 11.6%<\/a><\/p>\n

So if you combine Lidl and Aldi, you arrive at 23.4% and if you compare it to how close the other three are to each others, then a lead of 1.3% is HUGE!<\/a><\/p>\n

I tested myself and the results are sooo interesting!<\/h2>\n

A few months ago, friends of mine went to Glendalough and after a day of hiking, one of the two came back with a swollen face, fever and feeling absolutely rotten. He had never experienced that, but we guessed that it could be a form of hay fever\/pollen allergy. To confirm they did an Intolerance Test and got the confirmation that he has a Pollen Allergy that he never knew about.<\/a><\/p>\n

Because the results were so interesting, I also did the test. All you have to do – after you have bought it – is to send four or five hairs in a plastic bag to an address in the UK and about a week later you get a list of food and non-food items that you are intolerant too. Fascinating stuff! I found out that I am intolerant to peaches and to milk (I knew that) and to almonds, for example. I had never known about my body’s issues with peaches and almonds, but I tested it out afterwards and was amazed how accurate these test results are. Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The idea is simple: Run at speed through a set course and then shoot on a target with a Laser pistol and then repeat that 4 times. Time and accuracy both count and the course is either 4x800m or 4x400m long.<\/a><\/p>\n

Thomas Ashe Commemoration<\/h2>\n

Thomas Ashe was born in Kerry and began his teaching career 1908 as a principal in Lusk where he also founded a pipe band and the Round Towers GAA club. He was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and of the Irish Volunteers and was a commandant during the Easter Rising. He was arrested but not executed and was released in June 1917. In August he was arrested again and died during a huner strike in prison in Septermber 1917.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday the Round Tower GAA Club in Lusk is celebrating their founder with a full day of events. More information is on the website below and all events are listed on the flyer in PDF format here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There will be a Wreath laying, then a march to the GAA club, followed by a GAA tournament, then the unveiling of a Thomas Ashe sculpture will happen. Historical talks and a documentary screening will follow and in the evening bands and a pop-up gaeltacht will conclude the celebrations.<\/a><\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 29 September until 14 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 90 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

There is something wrong with the festival website website: I can’t reach it because my virus scanners block the site and report Malware on the site. The people running the site think all is harmless and it might be a false alarm. I will not risk it anymore and instead have now a PDF version of the programme and made it available via the Dublin Event Guide website so that you can use it as well if you want. The Dublin Festival of History runs from 29 September until 14 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 90 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in J.W. Sweetman’s. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together.<\/a><\/p>\n

The topic this month is “Ireland’s Groundwater”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Alex Russell (PhD researcher at UCD) will give a general overview of the quality of groundwater in Ireland (natural water chemistry and geology) but also cover contemporary issues in regard to climate change etc. For example, in Ireland, up to 25% of drinking water supplies are sourced from groundwater, with a particular importance in rural areas where public supplies are often unavailable. However, in Ireland private wells remain unregulated for quality testing, potentially leading to significant unknown exposures to contaminated waters.<\/a><\/p>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to some OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

For years, this event was one of the most popular monthly events with a HUGE amount of people taking part. But since July, it was more or less terminated for all of us in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.<\/a><\/p>\n

Outside but near to Dublin, you can visit

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 29 September until 14 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 90 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The people running the site think all is harmless and it might be a false alarm. Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin City Hall has a museum\/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2017.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Festival of History runs from 29 September until 14 October and is brought to you by Dublin’s Libraries and Dublin City. There are more than 90 events and all are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The people running the site think all is harmless and it might be a false alarm. Is This the End of Drinks Reception and Exhibition Openings?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t drink much alcohol and because I usually drive, it is just to risky even to have a glass of wine, so it wouldn’t affect me personally much, but it is interesting to observe how confused and ambivalent the attitude to alcohol in our society is.<\/a><\/p>\n

We know that it is not doing anything good, but it is completely normal to get access to alcohol. Things are different for other substances that could possibly even help suffering patients. An interestingly different approach between the two.<\/a><\/p>\n

But alcohol challenges the politicians. On one hand, they would like to forbid it, on the other hand they are SERIOUSLY afraid to do so because they fear the negative consequences from the voters at the next elections.<\/a><\/p>\n

So instead they tinker around with the rules. More and more stringent drink driving laws which drive Danny Healy-Rae crazy and other attempts to influence what happens in society, but the consequent step of a blanket ban will be avoided at all cost.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now it looks like the next restriction could be free alcohol that you might get at your hair dresser. It seems that the “Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (IACP)” and “Addiction Counsellors of Ireland” are asking the Health Minister to forbid free alcohol at a hair dresser. But if that will be forbidden, then all free alcohol, even at a drinks reception or at an exhibition opening will have to be forbidden. And if free alcohol will be forbidden, then there won’t be any glass of wine to welcome people aymore because the only other alternative would be to sell it and that is obviously illegal without a license.<\/a><\/p>\n

Just forbid alcohol completely. That would be the only honest thing and then we (and politicians) have to deal with the consequences OR alternatively stop getting into a panic over the odd glass of free drink!<\/a><\/p>\n
