Culture Night was GREAT! It is such a brilliant event and I really hope that you all had a chance to go to it as well. So many events, so many people, such a great atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n

But there is always also a downside of a Thursday or Friday event because it has the risk of impacting the Dublin Event Guide completion. Last night I was out from 17:00-00:00 and these 7 hours could have done wonders to this week’s Event Guide. Here is an update on the development at Newmarket Square and from reading this article, I get the impression that the two sides talk about COMPLETELY different things. The current Flea Market and other markets are largely indoor with SOME outdoor element. But since we are in Ireland, this often is not the most comfortable place to be for a market trader or a buyer, so without the large proportion of indoor space, we suddenly we a completely different type of market.<\/a><\/p>\n

The developer seems to think though that outdoor is all that is needed and that he is completely safeguarding the existence of the markets. A perfect example where both sides have not managed yet to make the other side understand their points!<\/a><\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/p>\n

Prints and drawings by German artist K\u00e4the Kollwitz (1867-1945) will be shown for the first time in the National Gallery of Ireland. \u201cK\u00e4the Kollwitz: Life, Death and War\u201d will give the Irish public an opportunity to discover this important woman artist who created almost 300 prints, around 20 sculptures and some 1,450 drawings during her long career. 38 prints and drawings from the rich collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Germany will be shown. Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2017″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Eye Contact Experiment is an event where you sit across another person and make eye contact for one full minute with that random stranger who is another participant in the experiment. The goal is to “rebuild our sense of shared humanity”.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event in Dublin will take place in St. Stephen’s Green and meeting point is at the top of Grafton Street across from St. Stephen’s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free. More than 850 people have declared that they will go and more than 3500 people are interested in this event. Not all of them are in Dublin, but MANY are!<\/a><\/div>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

This event is not free and sold out now, so mentioning it here is more a warning about the traffic impact than a suggestion to take part: On Sunday the Great Dublin Bike Ride will take place. Cyclists can go for a 60km or a 100km route. The start line is at the junction of Church Street and Arran Quay and the finish will be at Smithfield Plaza. Up to 6000 cyclists will take part and the routes can be seen here: http:\/\/www.greatdublinbikeride.ie\/routes\/<\/a>

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n

The space will be divided by age and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomh\u00e1n Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and no booking required. Numbers are limited to 40 people at any one time but you can drop in and out whenever it suits you and as long as there is still space. Children have to be supervised at all times. The event takes place in the Atrium.<\/a><\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

“The Chester Beatty\u2019s remarkable Manichaean papyrus codices have a complicated history. Written in Coptic and dated to the fourth century, they include unique sacred texts of a lost religion. They survived the almost total destruction of Manichaeanism as well as a World War and the chaos of its aftermath. The poorly preserved papyrus was painstakingly conserved by Dr Hugo Ibscher and his son Rolf. However it remains a complex puzzle for both researchers and conservators due to the challenges of folios in sellotape-sealed Perspex frames and the significant sections that remain unconserved.”<\/a><\/div>\n

Magazine Fort – Four Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Sculpture in Context – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be open form 07 Sept and will run until 20 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin City Hall has a museum\/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2017.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50<\/a><\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.<\/a><\/div>\n

“Probe: Research Uncovered” is an evening full of events and has therefore some similarity with Culture Night, just with a focus on research. There will be talks, experiments, comedy and workshops showcasing the best of Irish research. Probe is a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin and Science Gallery Dublin and is part of the European Researchers\u2019 Night.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event takes place in TCD\u2019s Front Square where live experiments, exclusive performances, interactive workshops, stand-up comedy and storytelling sessions in a number of tents will guide you through the study of vaccines, the future of tiny satellites, artificial intelligence and much, much more.<\/a><\/p>\n

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. MyTaxi increases charges by EUR 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know, they would argue that they are not doing that, but if you check your wallet after using a MyTaxi Taxi, you will have EUR 2 less in it than last week, so to me that is an increase. <\/p>\n

But let’s start that story at the beginning:
On Wednesday MyTaxi informed their customers that from midnight on that same Wednesday (Thanks for the advance warning! :-O ) MyTaxi drivers would (be allowed to) charge a EUR 2 booking fee for all bookings via the app or phone. <\/p>\n

According to MyTaxi, they had told their drivers not to charge that fee in the past, but they are not telling them that anymore and consequently the drivers will\/might add that EUR 2 now. <\/p>\n

The charge is allowed by the National Transport Authority (NTA) which regulates the taxi fares, so MyTaxi think they are fully compliant with all rules and regulations and probably to add insult to injury, they are claiming on their website (https:\/\/ie.mytaxi.com\/pricingpolicy<\/a>) that “We\u2019re confident that by implementing this change, mytaxi drivers will offer an ever-improving, market-leading service when you need it most.” <\/p>\n

Ask your customers and you will be told that you aren’t providing an “ever-improving” service. <\/p>\n

I am no expert on Taxi fare history, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that “booking fee” is from the olden days when taxis where “controlled” by radio. You rang their head office\/dispatcher and the head office told the driver where to pick you up. The EUR 2 were possibly the charge the head office got. But since you can’t request a MyTaxi taxi any other way than through the app (unless you go to a taxi rank) and because that middle man is not there anymore, it might be that that booking fee is well outdated!? <\/p>\n

Either way, it is an effective increase of EUR 2, so now before you drive a metre, you will have to pay EUR 5.60 during the day and EUR 6 at night and – as I reported last week in the Dublin News section of the Dublin Event Guide – this charge will increase in February to EUR 5.80 and EUR 6.00. <\/p>\n

I hope we will get the proper Uber service soon (not the crippled Uber service that we have currently)! It seems that some taxi competition is urgently needed. I am aware that Uber is not perfect either and the fact that they lost their license for London in the last few days shows this clearly, but I’d think Uber is fixable.<\/p>\n
