Rooftop restaurant for Dublin<\/h2>\n

It has been announced this week<\/a> that the plans for the former Central Bank building on College Green suggest offices for 1,000 people in the building and there will also be shops in the neighbouring buildings and a 300-seat rooftop restaurants on the top floor with super views over Dublin. I have been on the top floor of the Central Bank in the past and it is definitely a great view! The Plaza in front of the building will also be modified: The fences\/rails will be removed and the whole plaza is planned to be MUCH friendlier than now.<\/p>\n

The redevelopment will cost a pretty penny though! 75mio is no small change! And since the planning application only was submitted now, no timeframes have been outlined yet.<\/a><\/p>\n

Low priced Aer Lingus flights to the USA & Direct flights to Hong Kong<\/h2>\n

Two interesting announcements have been made that will give us greater opportunities to get away for a little while to far away places without having to spend a fortune:<\/a><\/p>\n

Aer Lingus said that they will offer flights to the USA for just EUR 169 each way from 01 October. There is a limited number of seats available and selling already starts now. The flight price includes NOTHING but a (non-allocated) seat: No check-in luggage, no blanket, no earphones. Ohh, meals are included!
For all other add-ons there will be additional charges. It won’t be a super cheap weekend, but a relatively cheap one and for a weekend in New York you might be ok with just 10kg of hand luggage if that only costs EUR 340 in flight cost.
Not a bad price BUT Norwegian currently offers flights for EUR 99 each way (Dublin to smaller airports near Boston or New York)! and WOW Air charges EUR 129 for flights from Dublin to the USA via Reykjavik (additional charges for meals), so Aer Lingus is definitely not cheap, it could work for some of you. In a separate announcement<\/a>, Dublin Airport has said that Cathay Pacific will offer the first ever direct Dublin – Asia flight with a new 4-times weekly flight from Dublin to Hong Kong from June 2018. The current return fares are approx. EUR 650.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Drummer needed for Gardiner Street Gospel Choir<\/h2>\n

Some of you know that I am involved with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. I am looking after all Technical and Sound related matters and am also involved with the smooth running of the choir.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the moment we are looking for a drummer to join our 6-piece band. 40 people and 5 band members will rely on the drummer’s beat, so he has to be reliable in all aspects and it would help a lot if he enjoys playing gospel music and pop\/modern songs with a spiritual meaning during a weekly mass and at gigs. Band and choir are all volunteers, so there is no pay available, but a huge amount of appreciation! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

The weekly mass will run from September until June and there will be some gigs in addition to the weekly “Gig in God’s Gaff”! Support is available to get the drummer up to speed (pun intended ;-) ) with all the repertoir.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems they couldn’t stop it<\/a> or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the highly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.<\/p>\n

Initially an attempt was made to add music, storytelling and other entertainment to the event so that the horse trading would be pushed in the background, but that didn’t work. So now it is back to horse trading as the main purpose.<\/a><\/p>\n

Trader need to register with Dublin City and get a trading license for the day and with all these restrictions the market is definitely not what it was before.<\/a><\/p>\n

Did it solve the problem? Well, it is highly unlikely that the horse traders now only twice a year sell and buy horses. So if they buy and sell more frequently then the trading happens elsewhere where the authorities can’t keep an eye on it. Consequently the problem might have gone away for Dublin, but if we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it is not happening!<\/a><\/p>\n

Now the big questions that people ask:
1) What is there to do?
2) I love animals. In the interest of the horses, should I go to the Horse Fair or stay away?<\/p>\n

1) There is not much to do at the event, but you will see a good few horses and a horse fair is a bit of a spectacle.
2) Many have the concern that going to the Horse Fair would support bad treatment of animals because sellers and buyers at the fair have been found in the past to mistreat the horses and ponies. However, your attendance (or not) will not have any impact on the horse fair and will also not influence the sellers or buyers to treat the animals in any other way than they normally do. Because the authorities are expected to be there in big numbers the horse handlers are probably on their best behaviour anyway. So it is unlikely that your attendance or non-attendance will have any impact on the welfare of the animals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

The cemetery at Arbour Hill is the last resting place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those buried there are P\u00e1draig Pearse, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. On 16 Sept is the International Zouk Day and on that day a dance Flashmob is planned to happen in Dublin and for the next seven weeks, starting this Sunday, a Dance Practice will take place at the Pavilion\/Summerhouse in St. Stephen’s Green (next to the lake).<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a 2 hour session and you will learn to dance this Brazilian partner dance that was born in Rio de Janeiro less than 30 years ago (early 1990s). You don’t need to have and dance experience and you also don’t need to have a partner to participate.<\/a><\/p>\n

For years, this event was one of the most popular monthly events with a HUGE amount of people taking part. But June, it has been more or less terminated for all of us in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.<\/a><\/p>\n

Outside but near to Dublin, you can visit

+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

However, as you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Temple Bar “Night” Market is more an afternoon and evening market (14:00-20:00) and it takes place every Wednesday until September.<\/a><\/p>\n

You can buy Arts & Crafts at this market.<\/a><\/p>\n

In previous years the missing food and drink stalls (probably to protect the pubs and restaurants in Temple Bar) was mentioned by visitors as a critique.<\/a><\/p>\n

I am NOT sure if this market is still continuing. The Temple Bar Company is not very good when it comes to keeping telling people howlong something will run. They said originally September, but then they keep calling it a “Summer” Market. Mind you, they also call it “Night” Market when it starts at 14:00. :-O<\/a><\/div>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

In 1964, Dr. Robert Moog introduced the Moog Synthesiser, a completely new type of instrument that changed the course of music history. The Moog Sound Lab is currently set up in the Science Gallery and as part of the SOUNDCHECK exhibition there will be a series of residencies in this Moog Sound Lab at the gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n

The artists will explore and experiment live in the exhibition space of the Science Gallery over the course of their week long residency, which will be open to the public. They will create a unique new composition inspired by the unique capabilities of the Moog.<\/a><\/p>\n

The next resdiency will be with Linda Buckley, a composer from Kinsale currently based in Dublin. Her work has been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, RT\u00c9 National Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Sinfoniker Orchestra and Crash Ensemble. She studied Music at University College Cork and Music and Media Technologies at Trinity College Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Thursday “Words on the Street – a European Literature Trail” will take place. It is a literature event in cooperation with many foreign embassies in Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

In six venues around Parnell Square five well known Irish people and UK author Kit de Waal will read literature from 18:30 until 21:15. There will be readings every half hour, with each reading lasting 15 minutes. <\/a><\/p>\n

The venues are Abbey Presbyterian Church, Belvedere College, Belvedere School, the James Joyce Centre, Dublin Writers Museum and Poetry Ireland and the readers are Katherine Lynch, Bryan Murray, Sharon N\u00ed Bheol\u00e1in, Rick O\u2019Shea and Johnny Ward will read from translated works of European literature and Kit de Waal will read from her debut novel My Name is Leon.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

ID Cards for Ireland? – Storm in a Tea Cup<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are passports in Ireland and most people have one, but for some strange reason some people in Ireland are totally and passionately against any type of ID Card system and currently there is a huge amount of panic amongst that group of people. I really can’t understand why that is! But then I read something that worried even me!<\/a><\/p>\n

It all started with a report in the newspapers about a woman who’s pension was withheld because she didn’t agree to getting a Social Services Card. We are told that there are currently close to 3mio Social Services Cards issued to people in Ireland and with all children excluded and a population of around 4.7mio, that seems like a huge amount. The card was initially used to combat Social Welfare fraud, but it seems it is now unnecessarily also used for lots of other things and that seems to panic people.<\/a><\/p>\n

The unnecessary uses of the card<\/a> are in areas where it seemingly is used as an ID Card, for example if you want to do a driver theory test or if you want to apply for or renews a drivers license or a passport. There is NO need to use a “Public Services Card” in these cases. Instead it should be absolutely find to bring your passport as ID. (The worldwide joke of having to bring some other forms of identity to renew a passport is something I will write about another time. ;-) )<\/p>\n

There is no obligation to have a passport AND there is no obligation to have a Public Services Card, but it seems without the Public Services Card you can’t get any services so there is a form of obligation.<\/a><\/p>\n

But let me pick the pieces apart first:
1) Is an form of ID Card justified for people that receive Social Welfare? I absolutely think so. It helps fighting against fraud.
2) Should a Public Services Card be used for all the other services I have mentioned above? Absolutely not if the person has a passport instead. Sure it can be an option to ID yourself, but only ONE option.
3) Is the Public Services Card a National ID card? No! It isn’t and it doesn’t look like one BUT it is used like an ID card and therefore the principle of “If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it most likely is a duck” will apply.<\/p>\n

Now SHOULD there be a National ID Card? I definitely think so! It does make sense to have a form of ID (instead of having to bring two household bills!!) but the use of the information “behind” the ID Card has to regulated and should be limited and that is where even I have concerns about the ability of the Irish government and state to protect its citizens.<\/a><\/p>\n

As you know, I am German. In Germany we have National ID Cards since 1951!! And the requirement to always have an ID card with you was introduced in 1939 and nobody has a problem with this law. I never experienced any problem due to the fact that I had an ID Card or that I had to carry it with me all the time and even today in Ireland, I always have my ID Card with me.<\/a><\/p>\n

So what is the panic? It seems that the panic is caused by the fear of how the authorities could do bad things to you if they know who you are. BUT they can arrest you anyway if you do something bad with or without ID Card and if you don’t do anything bad then they should not be interested in you, right?<\/a><\/p>\n

Well, in Germany (and other countries) the system seems to work and you wonder if this panic is just a storm in a tea cup!? A panic about some imaginary risk that will never happen?<\/a><\/p>\n

But then I read the article in the Irish Times<\/a> about the person that found her car registration details in the records of the Department of Social Protection. Information that they should have NO access to because every department should only have access to the information they need for their own business.<\/p>\n

And when you realise that most likely the Irish government WILL screw this up again and will share information across all departments even if they shouldn’t. Then suddenly you wonder if the worries of the panicking privacy defenders and ID Cartd opponents are maybe a lot more plausible than it should be?<\/a><\/div>\n
