After my long weekend away last week, it is all back to normal again in the Dublin Event Guide HQ. That is a good thing and a bad thing. Last week was SUPER hectic and tiring and I felt that staying up all night for too many nights does have a direct impact on my eyesight. That is a frightening experience. So “normality” is an improvement on that side because I “only” stay work through one full night and get about 3 hours sleep the other night. But for you “normality” is bad because it means unfortunately that the Dublin Event Guide is out late again. Apologies! I am still working on finding the golden compromise.<\/a><\/p>\n

Drummer needed for Gardiner Street Gospel Choir<\/h2>\n

Some of you know that I am involved with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. I am looking after all Technical and Sound related matters and am also involved with the smooth running of the choir.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the moment we are looking for a drummer to join our 6-piece band. 40 people and 5 band members will rely on the drummer’s beat, so he has to be reliable in all aspects and it would help a lot if he enjoys playing gospel music and pop\/modern songs with a spiritual meaning during a weekly mass and at gigs. Band and choir are all volunteers, so there is no pay available, but a huge amount of appreciation! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

The weekly mass will run from September until June and there will be some gigs in addition to the weekly “Gig in God’s Gaff”! Support is available to get the drummer up to speed (pun intended ;-) ) with all the repertoir.<\/a><\/p>\n

Heritage Week 2017 – Last Weekend!<\/h2>\n
\n

Heritage Week 2017 is taking place this week from Monday 19 August and it will run until Sunday 27 August. It is a nationwide event organised by the Heritage Council and this year’s theme is “It’s in Your Nature!” and with that, the focus is on natural heritage in 2017.<\/a><\/p>\n

A huge proportion of the events is free and in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire there are hundreds of walks, workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, talks, performances and recitals. There are soo many that I can’t include them all, but I did my best to include a good number of them, but that good number was probably still less than 10%!! So the rest, you will have to check out in the guides below.<\/a><\/p>\n

Altogether you have more than 120 pages of events for this one week long festival. Unfortunately the Heritage Council still separates the events by boroughs, which is not very helpful and there is another problem. The last update to the PDF guides was made on 17 July. I am not 100% sure if you need a more up to date version of the events lists, but if you do then you rely on their search facility on the What’s On Page of the website and while the search options are good enough, the presentation of events afterwards with just 6 events per page is extremely cumbersome.<\/p>\n

Summer of Heritage 2017 in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown – Last Weekend!!<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is the leading example in the whole Greater Dublin area of top class historic events for everybody and Dublin City really could learn from them!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Summer of Heritage programme of events is a series of 30 free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of D\u00fan Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council from 26 June until 03 September. The tours are suitable for families, historic groups and individuals interested in local history and some of the locations\/tours are The Oratory, Seapoint Martello Tower, Holy Trinity Church Kiliney, Historic Dundrum, Kill Abbey, Obelisk Stillorgan, James Joyce Tower, Historic Blackrock, The Metals, Dun Laoghaire Harbour Walk, National Maritime Museum, Dalkey Castle, Monkstown Castle.

It is National Heritage Week 2017 from Monday 19 August until Sunday 27 August. There will be thousands of events nationwide and in Dublin you can expect a few hundred of them. Organiser is the Heritage Council and this year’s theme is “It’s in Your Nature!” with a focus on natural heritage.<\/a><\/p>\n

A huge proportion of the events is free and in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire there are hundreds of walks, workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, talks, performances and recitals. There are soo many that I can’t include them all, but I did my best to include a good number of them, but that good number was probably still less than 10%!! Created by leading Irish and international artists from materials ranging from bronze, woods, ceramics, steel and stone. You can learn about the techniques used to create the artworks and feel samples of the materials used.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some parts of Dublin got fancy names in recent years. The Creative Quarter is one of them, it is the area from South WIlliam Street to George’s Street, but only between Lower Stephen’s Street and Exchequer Street. There is no higher concentration of “creative” businesses than in other areas, so it’s a purely marketing driven name.<\/a><\/p>\n

In that area with focus on Drury Street, Fade Street and South William Street, a “Creative Quarter Festival” will take place this weekend from 13:00-20:00 on Saturday and from 12:00-18:00 on Sunday. There will be live music, on-street cooking demonstrations, fashion shows, comedy (not free!), pop up stalls from local businesses and an out-door movie screening.<\/a><\/p>\n

The movie screening on Saturday (18:00-20:00 – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the orignal movie)) ) is sold out, but there is often an opportunity to get a lat minute place at events like that because people don’t make use of the free tickets that got if they have something “better” coming up.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday the Dublin City Marathon will take place in and around Phoenix Park. It starts with a Swim in the Liffey at the Garda Boat Club on Chapelizod Road, this will be followed by the cycle in Phoenix Park and the third component is a run also in Phoenix Park. There is an Olympic Triathlon and a Sprint Triathlon option that athletes cab choose and the distances are Swim 1500m or 750m, Cycle 40km or 20km, Run 10km or 5km.<\/a><\/p>\n

This event is free if you want to watch it and support the runners. Transition area is on Chapelizod Road and that area is a good start to watch the event. The finish is also at the Garda Boat Club, so you will be able to see most in that area.<\/a><\/p>\n

Please note: Phoenix Park will be more or less closed for all traffic until 12:00.<\/a><\/div>\n

It is National Heritage Week 2017 from Monday 19 August until Sunday 27 August. There will be thousands of events nationwide and in Dublin you can expect a few hundred of them. Organiser is the Heritage Council and this year’s theme is “It’s in Your Nature!” with a focus on natural heritage.<\/a><\/p>\n

A huge proportion of the events is free and in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire there are hundreds of walks, workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, talks, performances and recitals. There are soo many that I can’t include them all, but I did my best to include a good number of them, but that good number was probably still less than 10%!! Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n

The space will be divided by age and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomh\u00e1n Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some parts of Dublin got fancy names in recent years. The Creative Quarter is one of them, it is the area from South WIlliam Street to George’s Street, but only between Lower Stephen’s Street and Exchequer Street. There is no higher concentration of “creative” businesses than in other areas, so it’s a purely marketing driven name.<\/a><\/p>\n

In that area with focus on Drury Street, Fade Street and South William Street, a “Creative Quarter Festival” will take place this weekend from 13:00-20:00 on Saturday and from 12:00-18:00 on Sunday. There will be live music, on-street cooking demonstrations, fashion shows, comedy (not free!), pop up stalls from local businesses and an out-door movie screening.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

In it’s 8th year, the Ukulele Hooley is taking place in Dun Laoghaire again this weekend. It is Ireland’s only Ukulele festival and is a great event if you like this small near-comedic instrument. It is a festival with a great atmosphere. It won’t be too busy going by previous years and is totally family friendly. The line-up is listed here<\/a>. I will definitely be there at some stage on Sunday. ;-)<\/p>\n

At 16:00 a Ukulele Jam will take place when every Ukulele player in the audience is invited to play along. A song list was available on the website but is unreachable at the time of writing this. There is hope though that it will work again at some stage.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year and it is considered the holier one of the two. The other one is Eid al-Fitr and it marks the end of Ramadam.<\/a><\/p>\n

Eid al-Adha will take place on 01 September and the Islamic Foundation of Ireland (IFI) is inviting to their celebration in the Iveagh Grounds in Crumlin, Dublin 12 (across the AIB bank on Crumlin Road). Parking on the grounds is EUR 2 per day and busses 27, 56a, 77a and 151 will get you there.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains often on some Saturdays or Sundays, but also on other days during the month. The walks have varying difficulty and duration and the details can be found on the Dublin Mountain Partnership website: http:\/\/www.dublinmountains.ie\/news\/upcoming_events\/?no_cache=1<\/a><\/p>\n

This month, the walks will be on 12+16+26 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

All walks are free, but pre-registration is required (details are on the website).<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown’s Summer of Heritage programme there is a Dublin Mountain Partnership walk every Sunday in August, starting at 11:00 in Barnaslingan car park. One of the biggest Boxing Fights … or just a scam?<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Saturday night\/Sunday morning at around 05:00 a boxing fight will happen that is seen by some as the biggest boxing fight of the last 100 years or maybe of the boxing sport ever and for others it is just a big scam!<\/a><\/p>\n

Your opinion probably depends on who you support McGregor, Mayweather or neither of the two and how much you have looked into the fight.<\/a><\/p>\n

One thing is (quite) certain, there will be two human beings who will bash each others head in for their OWN enrichment. This is not an Ireland vs USA fight and it is also not a fight of Mayweather against McGregor or of MMA against the Boxing sport. It is also not a fight where either Floyd Mayweather OR Conor McGregor will win. No, the fight is a show that will make both opponents and their management a LOT richer than they are at the moment. McGregor is expected to get about 100mio and Mayweather will probably get from 300-400mio. Yes, the association of ringside physicians is VERY worried about the fight and severe damage of one or both opponents is possible, but I guess that’s not much different than at other fights and both seem to be happy to sacrifice their health for that crazy amount of money.<\/a><\/p>\n

Cleverly they have created a hype that will make a huge amount of dosh for both and I would say they both don’t care that much about who will win. McGregor can always claim that this is not really his sport as a MMA fighter and he will double or trebble his net worth with this one fight in the process and Mayweather can always blame his age as he is long retired and just came back for this one fight. He has about 25m to pay to the tax authorities, so the 300m will help with that. :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

So all this weighs down on the “scam” side of the argument.<\/a><\/p>\n

What about the two opponents? They both come across like egocentric, arrogant, brain-dead a**holes, but McGregor’s idiotic behaviour at the press conferences, his constant swearing and his seemingly out-of-control fits make him the much less likeable fighter.
Surprisingly though he seems to have a lot of support in Ireland and the UK if the press conferences are anything to go by, but I am not sure he cares. Maybe it is because he is the definite underdog but apart from that he has done nothing to endear himself to his fans as far as I can see. For me he represents the negativity of our society. He might be super smart and very clever but he hides that so well behind his insane posturing and peacocking that we have to wonder if maybe his smartness is the facade and not the insanity?<\/p>\n

There are two camps in Ireland at the moment it seems. There are the people who LOVE McGregor and want him to win to “f*ck the Mayweathers”. And then there are the others who think the little wannabe McGregor should be taught a lesson and get a nice beating.
Both sides clearly fell for the facade and pretense that surrounds this whole fight and both sides are needed to drive sales and to get the opponents to laugh their way to the bank.<\/p>\n

So in the end it seems the audience is being scammed and the two opponents are the really smart ones. Like at WWE (World Wrestling), we are the real dupes. Makes you wonder if maybe the outcome of the fight is also staged and – like in WWE – already known to the opponents?<\/a><\/div>\n
