It is August Bank Holiday weekend and bank holiday weekends are a little odd regarding events. We all have lots of time but it seems that event organisers don’t want to use that available potential. Maybe they need their own day off more than anything? The result is that typically there are hardly any events on the bank holiday Monday and even the weekend events are less than at other weekends. An odd dynamic! Nevertheless, I still found 200 events for you so that you won’t have to be bored this weekend if you are in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

HOWEVER, there is no danger to your life when you move jobs or when you start a new relationship (or end an old one) or do anything else new and unknown. So our “modern” brain shouldn’t make us fearful. So we need to influence ourselves by focusing on where we want to go. What is your goal? What is the bright light or the reward at the end of the path? If you focus on that instead of focusing on the fear, you will get the courage to take the necessary steps towards your goal.<\/a><\/div>\n

Small Claims Court can’t solve your private problems<\/h2>\n
\n

During the week in a Facebook Forum, a friend described a problem he is facing at the moment. He has loaned money to someone some while back but despite all initial promises, the other person neither paid anything back nor kept my friend posted about the progress or the issues why no payments were made yet. All attempts contact the person who took the money where ignored but regularly pictures are seen on facebook when that person is seen being out with friends at weekends etc.<\/a><\/p>\n

A pretty tricky situation! Not because there was a legal OR moral question mark about what is right and what is wrong. It is very clear. My friend was a very good and supportive friend, but the person that took the money (who also moved away since!) is behaving despicably. But the tricky part is the questions what to do next.<\/a><\/p>\n

So my friend asked in that forum and many people gave advise and made suggestions. Some were good, some less so, but we all have different ways of dealing with that sort of conflict.<\/a><\/p>\n

One common theme, however, was that MANY people suggested to go to the small claims court with the issue and this got me to write this article.<\/a><\/p>\n

The small claims court is a brilliant instrument. It is a court where the cost are extremely low (just EUR 25!), the disputed value is limited to EUR 2000 and a decision is made swiftly and without the need of an (expensive) solicitor. The small claims procedure is provided by the local District Court and it has been created to help people with issues that they might have with the seller of a product or service where you don’t want to spend crazy amounts of money and wait an extensive period of time to go through the courts system.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you bought a mobile phone and it is faulty but the seller doesn’t want to fix or replace it. Or if you got a repair done on your house or car or any other item, but it didn’t fix the problem and the repairman refuses to help you further. Or if you bought a holiday but it wasn’t as promised. In all these cases the Small Claims Procedure can be extremely helpful.<\/a><\/p>\n

But there is one important area where it an absolutely not help! If the issue is between two private people for owing money, then the Small Claims Procedure does not bite. On the Citizensinformation website it says “Consumer claims cannot be made through the small claims procedure for debts, personal injuries or breach of leasing or hire-purchase agreements.<\/span>“<\/p>\n

So unfortunately the advise that most people gave to my friend is in this case not applicable. Keep that in mind if you ever get into a dispute situation! By the way, the best way out of a money dispute with friends is not to loan any money to friends. This might sound harsh, but the stress you go through if things go wrong is harsher!<\/a><\/p>\n

Summer of Heritage 2017 in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is the leading example in the whole Greater Dublin area of top class historic events for everybody and Dublin City really could learn from them!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Summer of Heritage programme of events is a series of 30 free guided tours run by the Heritage Office of D\u00fan Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council from 26 June until 03 September. The tours are suitable for families, historic groups and individuals interested in local history and some of the locations\/tours are The Oratory, Seapoint Martello Tower, Holy Trinity Church Kiliney, Historic Dundrum, Kill Abbey, Obelisk Stillorgan, James Joyce Tower, Historic Blackrock, The Metals, Dun Laoghaire Harbour Walk, National Maritime Museum, Dalkey Castle, Monkstown Castle.

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n

The space will be divided by age and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomh\u00e1n Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and no booking required. Numbers are limited to 40 people at any one time but you can drop in and out whenever it suits you and as long as there is still space. Children have to be supervised at all times. The event takes place in the Atrium.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

The August Bank Holiday is the summit of the holiday season in Ireland. Schools are still on holidays and the famour “builder holidays” are also in full swing. So the airport is probably as busy as it can be. All this has an impact on events: Event organisers stay usually away from this weekend because they expect that Ireland is deserted. It doesn’t seem like that though! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Nealry all shops would would be open today, but some of the museums are closed. Some of the regular events in the Dublin Event Guide might also not be happening today, keep that in mind and maybe check before you venture out.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Thursday, Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Thursday, Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains often on some Saturdays or Sundays, but also on other days during the month. Out with the Old and In with the New? – Flea Markets in Dublin might lose their home!?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me start with a public declaration: I LOVE the “Dublin Flea Market” and the “Fusion Sundays World Culture Market”! I don’t get to go to these two markets as often as I would like to and I often go there without finding anything to buy but still enjoying the market, but I do visit these two events as often as I can.<\/a><\/p>\n

Both markets are a monthly event and they take place in the market hall of the Food Co-op at Newmarket Square. The Food Co-op is renting the building and sublets it every Sunday to a number of markets: Dublin Flea Market, Fusion Sundays Market, Rumble in the Jumble Market and Pure Vintage Market and in the past there was also the Brocante Furniture & Vintage Market, but they have moved to the Green Door Market Hall a few doors down, but also on Newmarket Square.<\/a><\/p>\n

So they are all in the same corner of the city and there is a good bit of a buzz every Sunday. The Dublin Food Co-op runs a regular food market in that hall and uses it for a good few other events as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

But things are about to change!<\/a><\/p>\n

Newmarket Square in Dublin 8 is not the “healthiest” area. It is a nice area, but many would agree that it is in serious need of some TLC (Tender Loving Care). For years it was neglected and some parts of the area badly show it. At Newmarket Square the Teelings Distillery build a brand new visitor centre and with that and with rising property prices, the owners of the neighbouring buildings saw a welcome opportunity to sell or develop their land and buildings, And it is all kicking off now!<\/a><\/p>\n

A number of planing applications have been submitted and the they will TOTALLY transform the area. The plan is to build apartments, student apartments, a hotel, a micro brewery, offices and retail space on Newmarket Square and all rents with current occupiers (i.e. the Dublin Food Co-op and the Green Door Market) will be terminated by the end of the year.<\/a><\/p>\n

It will mean that the Food Co-op will have to look for a new home and there is a good chance that that will be further out (maybe in an Industrial Park) and will also be smaller. And it will also mean that the Flea and other markets will lose their place. Because they are each only run once a month, they need to use somebody’s space instead of having their own, BUT the markets should be relatively flexible with regards to location. …they prove that they don’t totally rely on that specific space by being able to move a completely different part of Dublin for the Christmas Flea Market, for example.<\/a><\/p>\n

What is there to do now? Should people protest and try to get politicians to force developers to keep the markets where they are? Or should we just accept that things are always in flux and new challenges will bring new opportunities?<\/a><\/p>\n

The Flea Markets have decided to collect signatures<\/a> and to submit objections (before 08 Aug). The neighbours at Newmarket Square are totally against it and their biggest concern seems to be that ‘students will just sleep there and will then leave to go to parties in D4’ as one neighbour expressed it at a recent (badly organised) protest against the new development. And the Dublin Food co-op is not getting involved either way.<\/p>\n

I am not too sure if the Dublin Flea Market and the other markets have created a community that is tied to that location. They definitely have created a sort of community, but I would think that community easily could move to a new location. It will not be easy to find a location that has both plenty of outdoor space AND sizeable indoor space and it might be more expensive than it is now, but the markets are most likely profitable businesses and the challenge of indoor&outdoor space is just that, a challenge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe the market organisers should get the book “Who moved my cheese<\/a>” and then work on a new location and let New Market Square flourish and grow in its new clothes. The neighbours will probably against anything but the status quo, so they can’t be helped and for us Flea Market and Fusion Market fans? We promise that we will come to the new location as reliably as we came to the old one.<\/p>\n
