Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

Lately, whenever you get the Dublin Event Guide before Saturday afternoon it means that I am travelling somewhere or taking part in a course. When that happens, it is a major operation to get the weekly e-mail magazine compiled one or two days earlier and it has an impact on every other day of the week. See, I have a day job that also keeps my quite busy and that pays my salary and then I have another near full time job at 35 hours per week (that’s the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)), but that second job doesn’t pay me a cent. So, in order to pay my bills and buy food, I need to work hard on the first job and the second job has to come second. Maybe, one day, I can turn the second job into a money generating job (ideas on a postcard to me, please!! ;-) ), then I will start working on it a few days earlier and you will get the finished result on a Friday at the latest.<\/a><\/p>\n

Lots of things happening this week, enjoy some or all of them! And mark the weekend of 08+09 July in your calendar and block it completely. The best festival of the year will take place then. Make sure you have NO other plans. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Donations is a big worry at the moment, to be honest. This is the last week of the month and this month I only got EUR 60 in donations, but I need EUR 240 to pay the Dublin Event Guide bills. So much happening this weekend! There are community festivals (Stoneybatter Festival, Tallafest and Dundrum Festival), then there are Flavours of South Dublin & Flacours of Fingal festivals. People’s Art is happening again and it is Dublin Flea Market weekend and another really big event is the Dublin Pride Parade. Interesting Summer Solstice facts<\/h2>\n

The Summer Solstice is just behind us. It happened on 21 June. On that day the night was the shortest in the whole year and from Sunset to Sunrise that was exactly 7 hours. But it gets even more interesting! Because if we exclude twilight (It’s called Nautical Twilight), then the night was only 2 hours and 5 minutes long! :-O I thought that was sooo interesting that I had to share it with you! ;-) Thanks to the Irish Astronomical Society (http:\/\/www.irishastrosoc.org\/<\/a>) for explaining that so nicely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Stoneybatter is inviting to the first ever Stoneybatter Festival and they really worked hard. There are lots of events and most of them are free. The ones that are not free are marked on the website with a Euro sign.<\/a><\/p>\n

The festival begins on Friday already but the main days are Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday local businesses, museums, churches, community centres and even some private homes will be open for visitors. The pubs in the area have musicians performing and a concert (not free!) in the evening will take place as well.
Two outdoor stages will have music from 15:00. There will be free Outdoor Yoga. Biodiversity Workshops for children, Sewing classes and demonstrations,

Sunday is the Family Fun Day from 12:00-18:00. Stoneybatter Street and Manor Street are closed for traffic and there will be music on the festival stage and in pubs, dance, food, street performers, buskers, talks, tours and children entertainment.

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art” exhibition will take place this year. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of art works. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Dublin Pride Parade, a colourful, loud, good-humoured and popular parade of the LBGT* community, will take place on Saturday and it is some experience, no matter if you are participating or watching! This year the parade will start with some speeches and entertainment at 12:00 and the parade itself will start at 14:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The parade route will be COMPLETELY different than ever before. The event starts at St. Stephen’s Green South (go towards the Conrad Hotel or the Sugar Club to get to the right end of St. Stephen’s Green) and ends at Smithfield Plaza. A map is on the website below, but simplified the parade route is from St. Stephen’s Green to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, then to Christ Church, then passing by the Brazen Head Pub and crossing the Liffey, then to up Church Street and finally ending on Smithfield Plaza.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Smithfield Plaza, entertainment with music, drag acts and speeches and food and drink stalls will frame the post-parade party.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Stoneybatter is inviting to the first ever Stoneybatter Festival and they really worked hard. There are lots of events and most of them are free. The ones that are not free are marked on the website with a Euro sign.<\/a><\/p>\n

The festival begins on Friday already but the main days are Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday local businesses, museums, churches, community centres and even some private homes will be open for visitors. The pubs in the area have musicians performing and a concert (not free!) in the evening will take place as well.

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art” exhibition will take place this year. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of art works. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Dundrum Festival has been busier in previous years. But it is taking place again and that is better than nothing.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday there will be music performances on the bandstand of Dundrum Town Centre from 14:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

And Sunday is the main festival day. Main Street in Dundrum will be closed and a stage will be in the middle of the street with all sorts of entertainment. There will also be street entertainers.<\/a><\/p>\n

The website is not overly forthcoming with details and the Facebook page tells you even less, but it is possible that there are a lot more festival activities than these two channels suggest.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

Born in a labourer\u2019s cottage in Slane, Co Meath, the poet Francis Ledwidge worked as a farm labourer, a miner and a road worker while writing the poems that brought him fame during his short life. He enlisted in the Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1914. Having endured Gallipoli, Ledwidge was killed on July 31st 1917 during the nightmare 3rd Battle of Ypres.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known gospel choirs in Ireland will give you a chance to experience a mass with a difference. It is uplifting and inspiring and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness or your relationship with the Catholic Church in other contexts.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr Destenay discusses why the Conscription Crisis must be regarded as the real turning point in twentieth-century Irish history.
His research argues that the 1916 Easter Rising has been overestimated in Irish collective memory for political and cultural reasons and has superseded the importance of the threat of conscription in Ireland. The Trad Stage is a weekly Open Mic event in the Tivoli Backstage venue. Musicians are invited to perform live in front of an interested audience. Performances are primarily of Irish Traditional Music and Folk Singing, however it is possible to also see performances of traditional music from all over the world as well as performances of original compositions from local and international musicians.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains often on some Saturdays or Sundays, but also on other days during the month. The walks have varying difficulty and duration and the details can be found on the Dublin Mountain Partnership website: http:\/\/www.dublinmountains.ie\/news\/upcoming_events\/?no_cache=1<\/a><\/p>\n

Next Summer will be in 40 years!?

Last Wednesday (21 June) was the hottest day of the year, when Met Eireann measured 28.6 degrees in Phoenix Park. The whole week, or 5 consecutive days, was 5 degrees warmer than normal and if that happens, it is called a heatwave. For me, it was just a nice warm summer week. because summer temperatures for me START at 20 degrees. But if you are used to the cool 16-18 degrees that Ireland normally gets at this time of the year and if your thermostat is set to that low level, than you were probably melting in the current weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

Gerard Fleming, the head of forecasting in Met Eireann explained<\/a> that the last time such a heatwave hit Ireland was 40 years ago, So will it take another 40 years until we have a proper and nice week of summer again?<\/p>\n

Unfortunately the heatwave came to an end for now and there is no promise and certainly no guarantee that there will be another one soon. But wasn’t it great while it lasted!?<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, did you know what the highest ever temperature was in Ireland? On 26 June 1887 the temperature of 33.3 degrees was measured in Kilkenny. 33.3! That’s not a lot at all. Where I am from in Germany (not Spain, or Italy or Morocco. ;-) ) this is a NORMAL summer temperature!<\/a><\/div>\n
