The 10 year anniversary last week was a bit of a non-event. Thanks to the few who sent me congratulations, but I was at a seminar and was very much rushed getting the Dublin Event Guide out and couldn’t really celebrate at all. Ah well, it won’t be long and it is the 20 year anniversary. LOL<\/a><\/p>\n

National Gallery re-opens after six years of renovation<\/h2>\n

Great news! After six (!!!) long years of renovation, the National Gallery finally has fully re-opened their buildings las Wednesday. A lot of work was done and it seems that it did cost a pretty penny at EUR 30mio, but it is great that the gallery is again a proper gallery with a good sized exhibition instead of just a handful of rooms as during the renovation period.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now it is over to you! After six years I bet most of us can’t remember the richness of art that the National Gallery holds for us. Admission is free, so let’s all go in the next few months. Without a doubt there will be a few rainy days at some stage again! ;-) I am already looking forward to seeing the “new” National Gallery. www.nationalgallery.ie<\/a><\/p>\n

VHI SwiftCare Clinics will reject 3.6mio people<\/h2>\n
\n

2.12 million or 46 per cent of the population in Ireland have private health insurance and of these 2.12 mio, approx. 1.1 mio are members of the first and originally state-created health insurance VHI. That leaves more than 3.6mio that are NOT VHI members.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2005 the VHI opened so called VHI SwiftCare clinics in Dundrum, Swords and Cork, SwiftCare Clinics are walk-in, urgent care clinics that provide treatment and advice for patients with minor injuries and illnesses. Access to professionals with no significant waiting times was extremely attractive to many in need of urgent medical help and therefore these clinics have been used by lots of people, despite their relatively expensive price (VHI members got a discount, others had to pay full price).<\/a><\/p>\n

But from 01 September things will change for 3.6mio people: Access to QUICK professional care (for a price) will be closed to all non-VHI members. People that are not a member of the VHI will be rejected by the VHI Swiftcare clinics.<\/a><\/p>\n

The VHI is fully within their rights to restrict access if they think it makes sense. The Swiftcare Clinics is a commercial operation and they seem to think that VHI members get a bad services in the clinics because non-members clog up the system.<\/a><\/p>\n

LUAS Pre-Opening Celebration<\/h2>\n

The new LUAS is finally rolling!!! Yes, it only took 4 years to build what was there already many years ago. (From 1872 until 1949, Dublin had a well functioning tram system with up to 97 km of tracks!!) On Saturday the first tests with super slow moving LUAS (5-10 km\/h) will be carried out on the route from St. Stephen’s Green to College Green, to O’Connell Street and back.<\/a><\/p>\n

And as it is typical for Dublin, the jokers have discovered this opportunity and decided to make it an event. More than 700 people confirmed on Facebook that they will attend and it would be sooo coool if they really did. I’d say the real turnout will be a lot smaller, but it is still a funny idea to celebrate the LUAS by cheering it on. (Just leave the alcohol at home!)<\/a><\/p>\n

At 11:30 a photo call at O’Connell Street will take place with the Minister of Transport. Maybe that is the best place and time to show the support for the LUAS? :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Oddly Gardai and marshals will “protect” the LUAS during the tests. Bad sign for when full operation kicks in, if the new LUAS line needs protection, isn’t it? ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday the tests will continue on the route from between Broadstone and Cabra and through the City Centre again, but no “Cheer the LUAS” activities are planned for the second day yet.<\/a><\/div>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “SOUND CHECK” (09 June – 24 September) in the Science Gallery is looking the influence sound has on our life. THe exhibition looks at lots of interesting ways to create sound.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is highly interactive exhibition with lots of oppoertunities to create sound\/make noise. Some of the main exhibits are a big sound pinball table, a synthesiser on a bike, musical swings, a room full of Moog Synthesiser equipment, a Uranium controlled Xylophone and there are fice “Sonic Bikes” that you cyn pre-book and loan out for a 1 hour guided tour in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part and nobody will be bored.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 14:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known gospel choirs in Ireland will give you a chance to experience a mass with a difference. It is uplifting and inspiring and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness or your relationship with the Catholic Church in other contexts.<\/a><\/p>\n

As far as I know the Midnight Hour gigs are completely free on Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays you can get in for free if you either arrive before 22:30 or if you sign up for the guestlist.<\/a><\/div>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Story of the Capital – Exhibition in Dublin City Hall<\/h2>\n

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:<\/a><\/p>\n

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.<\/a><\/p>\n

The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 14:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin City’s silly fight against competing bikes: BleeperBike
<\/strong><\/p>\n

We all know and love the Dublin Bikes. The Dublin Bike scheme is a huge success and will hopefully get expanded more and more. Back when it was introduced, a somewhat dubious deal was struck with advertisement company JCDecaux and I am still not convinced that that was the right decision by Dublin City. Since then the cost to run the scheme seem to be outrageously high and some have wondered where the money really go. And the increase in charges some while ago also weren’t the best news. So there are some issues, but all in all it is a really good scheme. AND it is a very financially stable scheme, which means that competition couldn’t really harm it: There is more demand than the Dublin Bike scheme can deliver and the prices are in general so low that any other bike rental business would find it difficult to harm the Dublin Bike business.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regarding the future of traffic in Dublin we are constantly shown by Dublin City’s actions that the shift from cars to bikes is a huge and definite goal for Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

In this bike-positive climate and having seen the same in many other European cities, a private company has decided that they want to also offer a bike rental scheme that will – to a degree – compete with the Dublin Bikes scheme, but at the same time it will not compete at all. The company is called BleeperBike and their approach is that that put bikes on bike stands in the City Centre (NOT at prescribed locations!) and you can find the bike through an app. Through that app you also book the bike and pay for the use. The fact that bikes can be in locations that are not “bike terminals” is a big advantage (Flexibility!) but the price is a LOT higher than the Dublin Bikes price.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you use a BleeperBike for 2x 20 minute rides every working day of the year, you will pay EUR 440 in the year (Each ride up to 1 hour is 1 Euro.). If you use Dublin Bikes for your 2×20 min trips on 220 days per year, you will pay just EUR 25. So the difference is sooooo dramatic, that the BleeperBikes will never fully compete with Dublin Bikes for regular users. VERY infrequent users could however terminate their Dublin Bike card and pay the occasional Euro. And because I expect that Dublin City plans to increase the basic fee step by step (I don’t think it is justified by the way!) a pay-as-you-go scheme would be very unwelcome competition.<\/a><\/p>\n

So what happened? BleeperBike announced that they will launch in July or maybe even before (this week was even mentioned) and immediately Dublin City goes into panic mode and spits out silly and nonsensical threats.<\/a><\/p>\n

For example Dublin City says that the bike scheme does not have its consent to operate. So what? As long as BleeperBike doesn’t break any laws – and it doesn’t seem to – who cares about their “consent”.
DCC also have warned us that we would be using the service at their own risk? Excuse me? Is that any different than when I use my own bike? Or when I cross the street? It is the idiotic “Health & Safety” excuse that is used in Ireland whenever people have run out of arguments against something.
But it gets better! The next argument against BleeperBike is that Dublin City would have to first ensure that “there is adequate cycle parking capacity in city centre locations”. Who wrote that?????? Will we soon have check points at access roads where the (private) bikes are counted and the gate will get closed if too many people enter the city on bikes? And with all the cars that are taken out of the city we sure have more than enough space for bikes.
Next argument: Dublin City has to ensure “that bikes are not abandoned at unsuitable locations”. How is that different for my own bike than for a rental bike scheme?
Bu if you thought you have heard now the hight of stupidity, we are not finished yet. The final clincher from DCC’s point of few seems to be the threat that “Dublin City Council is empowered under Section 71 of the Roads Act 1993 to remove unlicensed items on the footpath\/roadway without further notice.” That law was made to give the authorities the right to remove signs\/advertisement that is not licensed, not to remove your bikes (or someone else’s bikes) whenever they feel like! And they use the fact that (very small!!) BleeperBikes’s name is written on the bikes. If you go to the BleeperBike website, you will see that it is TINY writing and would be not bigger than the brand\/manufacturer name that is printed on every bike, but DCC is clearly grasping for straws.<\/p>\n

I have no connection with BleeperBikes and heard the first time about it today! But I think DCCis REALLY going over the top here. Sure, competition blocking is always a cool thing if you want a monopoly, but in my opinion it will be a good thing if there will be some competition. It will keep DCC on their toes, one would hope.<\/a><\/p>\n

…and if you have concerns then at least use proper arguments instead of nonsensical ones.<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way: The BleeperBike website is really not finished yet and the app crashes every time you try to start it, so they have a LOT more work to do before they can even compete with Dublin Bikes.
