My week was mixed with some great achievements and some bad news. Sounds like a normal week in life, right? I have “launched” the new Dublin Event Guide Facebook Group (we already have a Page with 70,000 Followers). Facebook Groups are more like a get together where people can exchange their opinions, can chat, can discuss things if they want. So it is less me telling you something about events, but you can talk to each other if you wish. I don’t expect that the group will become huge, but I hope it will become a lively environment for Dublin Event Guide users. The Group is here.<\/a><\/p>\n

The posting format is the same as in previous weeks: Website first for the Saturday events, then adding more events for Sunday and weekdays and then the mail will be sent to all 24,000.<\/a><\/p>\n

The PhotoIreland Festival (01-31 May) consists of exhibitions, workshops, photobook launches and talks. This year, the festival explores how Photography is used to share accounts of personal experiences related to conflict: The Recount of Conflict. Many events are free, but the website doesn’t make it easy to identify what is free and what isn’t. Spring into Heritage 2017 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown event programme<\/h2>\n

The “Spring into Heritage” programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is back and will consist of a series of free guided tours between 24 April and 18 June in a a whole range of heritage sites.<\/a><\/p>\n

The sites included are The Oratory, James Joyce Tower and Museum, Dalkey Castle & Heritage Center, Marlay House, National Maritime Museum, Cabinteely House, Seapoint Martello Tower, Dun Laoghaire Harbour, Dublin Bay Biosphere Tour. Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page<\/a> (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: http:\/\/www.bealtaine.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Like Dublin 1 and Dublin 2, Dublin 8 is a HUGE part of Dublin. It reaches from Christ Church to Kilmainham Gaol and from the Liffey to the Grand Canal. On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May the very first “neighbourhood festival” takes place in Dublin 8 and everyone is invited to it.<\/a><\/p>\n

All events are free, but most needed registration and unfortunately all tickets are gone. So unfortunately there is not much left to do if you have no tickets.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday and Sunday all guided tours in the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Richmond Barracks, Irish National War Memorials, Kilmainham Gaol, Magazine Fort, Goldebridge Cemetery and on Pat Liddy’s Walking Tours are booked out.<\/a><\/p>\n

All that is left are a few self-guided tours in IMMA. IMMA Gardens, the National War Memorials and in Kilmainham and on Sunday afternoon there is a Family Explorer event in the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 14:00-16:00 with artwork exploration and workshops for families with children.<\/a><\/p>\n

So, what’s the “verdict” about this new event? Well, it is great if you have tickets to a guided tour, but if you don’t it is an absolute non-event! The initiative is great, the idea is good, but big events that do not require tickets are required to make it a proper festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

Culture Night is so successful because you do NOT need to plan and book tickets and there is something to do for everybody. “Culture Date with Dublin 8” is nowhere near a “neighbourhood festival” because most of the people are excluded from visiting the neighbourhood on the weekend for lack of venues to go to. It’s a start, but hopefully it will be much better in 2018!<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 21 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The ISPCA will bring an army of dogs (including puppies!) who are looking for a new home. And there will also be professional dog grooming services, vet and behavioural advice from the experts, including TV Vet Pete Wedderburn and Suzi Walsh and lots of pet prizes. The us two-legged visitors there will be coffee and food stalls.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every year in May the National Dawn Chorus is celebrated with a very early morning walk at the grounds of Castletown House. Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page<\/a> (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: http:\/\/www.bealtaine.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Like Dublin 1 and Dublin 2, Dublin 8 is a HUGE part of Dublin. It reaches from Christ Church to Kilmainham Gaol and from the Liffey to the Grand Canal. On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May the very first “neighbourhood festival” takes place in Dublin 8 and everyone is invited to it.<\/a><\/p>\n

All events are free, but most needed registration and unfortunately all tickets are gone. So unfortunately there is not much left to do if you have no tickets.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday and Sunday all guided tours in the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Richmond Barracks, Irish National War Memorials, Kilmainham Gaol, Magazine Fort, Goldebridge Cemetery and on Pat Liddy’s Walking Tours are booked out.<\/a><\/p>\n

All that is left are a few self-guided tours in IMMA. IMMA Gardens, the National War Memorials and in Kilmainham and on Sunday afternoon there is a Family Explorer event in the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 14:00-16:00 with artwork exploration and workshops for families with children.<\/a><\/p>\n

So, what’s the “verdict” about this new event? Well, it is great if you have tickets to a guided tour, but if you don’t it is an absolute non-event! The initiative is great, the idea is good, but big events that do not require tickets are required to make it a proper festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

Culture Night is so successful because you do NOT need to plan and book tickets and there is something to do for everybody. “Culture Date with Dublin 8” is nowhere near a “neighbourhood festival” because most of the people are excluded from visiting the neighbourhood on the weekend for lack of venues to go to. It’s a start, but hopefully it will be much better in 2018!<\/a><\/div>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

This Sunday the 2nd yearly Kids Guide Summer Camp Fair is back! More than 50 camps will showcase their summer, as well as annual camp and class programmes for kids around metro Dublin and even from as far away as Connemara. Last year’s fair was such a success that this year the fair has moved to a larger location at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire to accommodate more than double the number of exhibitors and visitors expected.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but if you pre-register your kids will have a chance to win one of the many great camps that have made a prize available. Camps for kids aged 4-17 will feature, along with taster sessions and entertainment all day. The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 21 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The us two-legged visitors there will be coffee and food stalls.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page<\/a> (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: http:\/\/www.bealtaine.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page<\/a> (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: http:\/\/www.bealtaine.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The National Library is involved in “The National Neighbourhood: Around the Table” project. This project connects communities old and new across Dublin\u2019s historic central area with artists of different disciplines to explore the food history of the area. Groups visited the library as part of the project. Themes of mothering, belonging, words and work were shared through mapping the story, role and journey of food in the city – from the docks to the markets, and from the streets to the table.<\/a><\/p>\n

The short film “Around the Table” (24 min) was made as part of the project, and explores Dublin’s food history through the memories of Dublin’s dock workers, workers from Cadbury’s who explain why the ‘Flake’ produced in Dublin had the best taste to current developments in food choices.<\/a><\/p>\n

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page<\/a> (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: http:\/\/www.bealtaine.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”<\/h2>\n

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page<\/a> (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)<\/p>\n

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: http:\/\/www.bealtaine.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains often on some Saturdays or Sundays, but also on other days during the month. We are back where we were before…and we have learned NOTHING! – House prices in Dublin
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just 9 years ago in 2008 the country nearly collapsed when the banks and the property market got in serious trouble. People couldn’t pay their mortgages anymore because they had paid too much for the properties they lived in and for investment properties and many are STILL hurting from the losses. But memory is a short term thing!!<\/a><\/p>\n

Back then, the mess was created by builders overcharging to make a big profit and by buyers overpaying because they expected massive profits. Last weekend it seemed as if 2008 had never happened. I heard about it on Newstalk but after a good search found an article about it in the Irish Times<\/a>: Twelve out of fifteen apartments in the Hanover Lofts development at Grand Canal Quay were sold over one single weekend! The price? The 4x one-bedroom apartments start at EUR 415,000 and the 11x two-bedroom apartments start at EUR 575,000.<\/p>\n

The madness is back with a vengeance!<\/a><\/p>\n

What does that mean for us? If you own a property you can celebrate because the price is definitely going up. And if you don’t won any property there are two options: Either start panicking because you need to buy NOW and not wait any longer. OR: RELAX!! The prices are already FAR beyond what is affordable for many. So no rush for your buying! Maybe there will be another crash, THEN it is your turn! ;-)<\/a><\/div>\n
