Once again I am using the same approach as last two weeks: I looked for Saturday events first so that I can post a Saturday summary on the website and on the Facebook page asap. More events will then be added during the day until all is included and then the mail will go out and the smart phone app will be updated at the same time.<\/a><\/p>\n

Next week I will have a new challenge because I will be away at a training course from Thursday until Sunday. So I will have to get the Dublin Event Guide finished very early but won’t have a lot of days to do so. Not sure yet how to accomplish that, but I will keep you posted.<\/a><\/p>\n

The technical problem that I mentioned last week MIGHT be solved. I discovered something last week and if that really fixes it, then the solution is a faster Internet link in the range of just a few milliseconds. Not sure if the solution is reliable, I will find out this week.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Big 500 Share is still running and 3 more nice people supported my work with a donation last week. Thanks a lot! And a BIG thanks to Jutta B-S! The target was to raise at least EUR 3000 through this campaign, but with 1420 we are still far far away from the target, BUT we got a little more than EUR 400 for the two charities. That is respectable! The problem now is that the remaining amount of just over 1000 will be used up by the end of May. :-O If you can help, please do! Wetherspoon will come to Camden Street<\/h2>\n

The British pub chain Wetherspoon got the ok to build their first pub in Dublin’s City Centre and it will be an interesting development. Wetherspoon is disliked by competitors because they offer very competitive drink prices and cause a price competition that other pubs don’t like. Customers have divided opinions: Some appreciate the low prices for food and drinks but others point out that the food is not really of great quality.<\/a><\/p>\n

The pub in Camden Street will be combined with a 98 room hotel and it will not target the late-night-pub goers. Wetherspoon pubs never have live music and this one will not even have amplified music. It also will already close at 00:30. A very unusual pub then!<\/a><\/p>\n

The building it will occupy needs major renovation and with that, it is not a bad development because it will sort out a row of seriously dilapidated houses, but it remains to be seen if this pub will make its name or will be more a “hotel bar” with some mediocre food. A huge hotel bar it would be at more than 1800 sqm!<\/a><\/p>\n

Since there are already 12 bars and pubs in Camden Street and there are also 36 cafes and restaurants in the area, will definitely not be needed to fill a gap so their challenge will be to offer something different or better than all the other establishments.<\/a><\/p>\n

I came across a really interesting video clip on Facebook last week. It is about what stories we read our kids and Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo are talking commenting that none of the stories we read to kids have women in leading roles and in none of them women are in charge of their lives. So to change the role models of the girls in your life, you should consider their book “Good Night Stores for Rebel Girls”. It is a book with the real-life stories of 100 outstanding women and it really looks impressive.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

A series of lunchtime lectures in City Hall deal with “Remembrance & Commemoration: The First World War”.<\/a><\/p>\n

The First World War was at the time the most devastating conflict in world history \u2013 never before had so many people been slaughtered and so many countries been involved. The commemoration of this tragic event required careful consideration. This series looks at commemoration in Belgium, Germany, Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State as they explored the legacy of a cruel war and tried to give a voice to the young men who had been killed or survived.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission to these lectures is free for the first 130 people. Doors open at 12:30 and the lecture begins at 13:10.<\/a><\/p>\n

Healthfest 2017 is a festival of healthy food, engaging talks and “fun-filled” demonstrations (whatever that means!?) for teachers and Transition Year students in the RDS.<\/a><\/p>\n

Please note: The organisers claim that the event takes place in “RDS Simmonscourt” and elsehwere they say it will be in “Hall 4”. This is a contradiction! The RDS websites says that the evnet is in Hall 4, so then all the Simmonscourt related information on the Healthfest website is incorrect. <\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free and it is not very clear if booking is required. It seems that booking IS required, but all you can do is leave your e-mail and then they will have to get back to you. Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

National Maternity Hospital – Get the religious orders out!<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is puzzling to the highest degree how Irish politics – even in 2017 – still colludes with religious organisations. Sure there was a long history of influence and there are still plenty of politicians who still don’t understand that no church or religious organisation should be allowed to interfere with the state, but do we have to wait until they are dead before things will change?<\/a><\/p>\n

The newest scandal is the fact that the Sisters of Charity, an order of Catholic nuns, will own the National Maternity Hospital (NMH) next to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Ballsbridge. They will not just have some shares or get a percentage of the profit, no, they will OWN the hospital. You might wonder if they will build it or buy it because if you and I own something, we usually have to pay for it? No! They won’t have to pay for it! The fact that they are owning the land on which the National Maternity Hospital will be built seems to be enough to give them ownership. That is shocking!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Sisters of Charity were one of the religious organisations that proved in the past that back then they were NOT able to look after the welfare of mothers and children. And after the swamp was cleaned, regrettably the Sisters of Charity didn’t provide the compensation payments that they had promised to the “redress scheme”. For many, this is the reason<\/a> why they are totally against that religious order to own the NMH. I agree that that definitely can’t be ignored, but for me it is even a bigger problem that the separation of church and state should just never allow such intermingling.<\/p>\n

Keep the interests separate from each other and you won’t get into dodgy or tricky situations when certain treatments could interfere with religious principles. The Department of Health claims<\/a> that they are in charge and won’t let anybody interfere, but there can’t be any guarantee for that.<\/p>\n

The solution? Buy the land from the religious order! I think the Sisters of Charity should pay what they owe regarding the compensation that they are due, but at the same time, the state should fairly then pay for and afterwards own the land the NATIONAL Maternity Hospital stands on. There is NO other option!<\/a><\/div>\n
