A new approach: Instead of publicising the Dublin Event Guide in two stages in full, I extracted the Saturday events and posted them on the Dublin Event Guide website. And then I continued with the work on the events from Sunday until next Friday and I am sending this now on Saturday evening late. I am not sure yet if that is a better solution, but it allowed me to release the information earlier on Saturday than usually. Maybe that helps!?<\/a><\/p>\n

The Big 500 Share is still running and 3 nice people supported my work with a donation last week. Thanks a lot! The target was to raise at least EUR 3000 through this campaign, but with 1300 we are still far far away from the target, BUT we got a little more than EUR 400 for the two charities. Arrowhead Union Orchestra & Dublin Concert Band – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

This is a unique encounter between the American Arrowhead Union orchestra, a music ensemble from the Arrowhead Union High School from Wisconsin, USA and the Dublin Concert Band.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Arrowhead Union orchestra is made up of the Arrowhead Chamber String, the Arrowhead Symphonic Band and the Arrowhead Wind Ensemble and they are on a performance tour in Ireland. At the concert they will play pieces from Georg Friedrich H\u00e4ndel, Gustav Holst, John Mackey and others.
The Dublin Concert Band is Ireland’s best Amateur Concert Band with an emphasis on musical excellence combined with lifelong friendships. They will play works from Leonard Bernstein, Nigel Hess and Bela Bartok and others.<\/p>\n

That should be a great concert!<\/a><\/p>\n

On 09 April everything Plus Size will come together for the “Ireland’s Got Curves” event near the airport. There will be Fashion Shows, Workshops, Demos, Guest Speakers, Pop-up Shops, Awards, Entertainment for women of all sizes and shapes from Size 12 and above.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed very soon and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)<\/a><\/p>\n

30 km\/h on all “residential roads” from 01 April<\/h2>\n
\n

You might think it is an April Fool’s Joke, but such nonsense is just day-to-day business in Dublin: From 01 April there is a 30 km\/h speed limit on all residential roads<\/a> between the canals all day, every day. I am totally on favour of 30 km\/h speed limits near schools, in areas with a large amount of pedestrians and in other danger spots. But a blanked speed limit of 30 km\/h is total nonsense.<\/p>\n

Dublin City claims it will save lives, but they don’t seem to substantiate that with clear numbers that tell us how many people actually died in traffic accidents between the canals in the last 12 months or the last few years. And out of these fatal accidents, I would like to know how many involved a speed of the car of more than 30 km\/h. I bet Dublin City has NO such numbers or statistics, so they just use the emotional argument that lives will be saved, expecting that everybody will shut up then.<\/a><\/p>\n

Speed limits should make sense, then the majority of people will stick to them. But where they don’t make sense, the “30” signs are a waste of effort and the speed limit will have absolutely no effect.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the time of writing this, the new speed limit wasn’t in effect yet, so we will have to see after 01 April if the “residential road” classification was applied to the right streets, let me know if you find streets that are in the speed limit zones that shouldn’t be. Oh and if you think it won’t affect you because you don’t have a car, think again: Every bus and every taxi will also have to adhere to the limit. (Only cyclists don’t have to! They can now easily overtake busses and cars at any speed they like because they can’t be taken to task when exceeding the limit.)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Each of the 34 Cantos is illustrated typographically and each book of the Divine Comedy has a different typographic style.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

Voice of Irish Concern for the Environment (VOICE) and volunteers will cook the meal, made entirely from good food that would have been thrown away due to its short sell-by date or because it looked funny. The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. A series of lunchtime lectures in City Hall deal with “Remembrance & Commemoration: The First World War”.<\/a><\/p>\n

The First World War was at the time the most devastating conflict in world history \u2013 never before had so many people been slaughtered and so many countries been involved. The commemoration of this tragic event required careful consideration. This series looks at commemoration in Belgium, Germany, Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State as they explored the legacy of a cruel war and tried to give a voice to the young men who had been killed or survived.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission to these lectures is free for the first 130 people. Doors open at 12:30 and the lecture begins at 13:10.<\/a><\/p>\n

Rob is the creator of The Food Waste Fiasco, a campaign that strives to end food waste and hunger in the U.S. and he has shown how nearly half of all food in the U.S. is wasted while 50 million (1 in 7) Americans are food insecure.<\/a><\/p>\n

This event is taking place in B\u00ed Urban, a not for profit space in Stoneybatter that connects Urban livers to nature in the city and sustainable education.<\/a><\/p>\n

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

On 31 May 1941 four bombs were dropped by German bomber planes on North Strand area. 300 houses were demolished, 28 people got killed and 90 got injured. Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.<\/a><\/div>\n

Trust issues – Is the Irish Police Force dodgy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The An Garda Siochana, the Irish Police Force, is – like every other police force in the democratic world – the one and only enforcer of right and wrong in the country. They are not the judge if it is REALLY right or wrong, that’s what we have the judiciary (the courts and judges) for, but the police has to enforce the laws.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you enforce the laws, however, you should also be obliged to stick to the laws. It increases your credibility tremendously and you set an all important example. If the rules don’t apply to the enforcer of the laws, then people behave like the children of parents that don’t stick to the rules they spout out. They become unruly and break the rules.<\/a><\/p>\n

A small example: It is wrong for the Gardai to be allowed to use\/handle mobile phones when driving, as long as all of us are not allowed to use mobile phones. And I think that EVEN if the mobile phone use is exclusively in the pursuit of their job….because we all know that it is NOT only in the pursuit of their job when they use the phone.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is however a really small example and the Irish Gardai do it better:<\/a><\/p>\n

1) Over the last few years they claimed that they carried out 1.9mio roadside alcohol test, but the Medical Bureau of Road Safety only knows of 1mio. How can there be a discrepancy of nearly a million? (RTE Report<\/a>)<\/p>\n

2) 14,500 people were prosecuted for road traffic offences and will have their convictions quashed because the gardai screwed up. They were brought to court without getting a fixed charge notice first. Not ok! (How come it took so long to come out?) The people that now get their money back and points removed because they drove 3km\/h too fast (I got 3 points for that. Grrr!) are ok in my eyes, but what about people that committed serious traffic offences and who will also go without any penalty now? (RTE Report<\/a>)<\/p>\n

3) The Sergeant Maurice McCabe saga that is also called the Garda Whistleblower Scandal where Maurice McCabe lifted the lid on Garda corruption around the penalty point system and was threatened within the police force and a cover up was attempted is still not completely sorted. 5 years after it started!<\/a><\/p>\n

4) This week it emerged that there are financial irregularities at the Garda College in Templemore. They had 50 (!) bank accounts for the college and used money for entertainment and presents that should not have been used for that. (RTE Report<\/a>)<\/p>\n

5) And now the Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan indicates that this might not be the only falsifications there are.<\/a><\/p>\n

Can we really trust our Police Force? I am sure (and know) there are many Gardai that can be trusted but if there are soo many problems, there seems to be a huge systemic problem and if you need LUCK to get to deal with a “good” Gardai then that doesn’t instill confidence in the enforcer of right and wrong in our country.<\/a><\/div>\n
