Hi all!<\/p>\n
Another good week is coming to an end, but the weekend is looking good. I can’t promise summer weather, but at least there are a number of interesting events. Last weekend I was at the Temple Bar Circus Festival and met a few friends that I hadn’t seen for a while, which was really nice. On Tuesday I had the opportunity – thanks to Ireland’s Master-Blogger and Master-Twitterer (I gave him that title just now :-) ) Darragh Doyle (http:\/\/darraghdoyle.blogspot.com\/<\/a>) and the team from Street Performance World Championship – to see some of the best Street Performance Acts at a showcase for enterprises. Imagine, you (or your company) can book the great performers that you saw in Merrion Square for your company event! Charlie Caper was doing impressive tricks and the Space Cowboy left a trail of destruction in the cutlery drawer by bending spoons and forks. Amazing stuff!! And what can I say, it was fun. ;-) I have to explain a little more here because you might not YET have heard about Peter. He is a qualified and experienced horticulturist with more titles\/awards than fit on a business card. ;-) Peter is very passionate about gardening, but he does realise that horticulture can be a little boring if you are not into it. So in addition to the gardening and “outdoors-related” topics he adds colour and variety to his landscaping weblog by interviewing people he encounters and he does a brilliant job at it in a unique and funny way. He is a really nice guy and no matter if you get him to help you with your garden or if you just enjoy his blog, you will encounter a brilliant combination of professionalism and fun. \nThe Library in Dublin are not only great places to read and loan books or to use the Internet for free. In addition to all that, the libraries offer an impressive range of talks and events. There are soo many events that only sometimes I am able to list them here. \nAccording to a study by consulting firm, Mercer, Dublin is still the most expensive country for fast food. The survey considers March 2008 until March 2009 and compares the prices of fast food in the different countries. The most expensive places are Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, Athens, Brussels and Rome. The least expensive places are Prague, Warsaw and Johannesburg.

\nLast week I found out through a Twitter Message, that the Borders Book Shop in Blanchardstown, the only shop in Ireland of that international chain, was to close down and that there was a 50% discount on everything!! On Wednesday I made my way to Blanchardstown after work and arrived at 18:50 to find out that the shop didn’t let any new customers in anymore, because the queue in the shop at the check-out was more than 2 hours long. :-O Normally the shop is open until 21:00, but they had to close at 18:30 and had extra hired two security guards and even crowd control barriers were at hand. It seems that at 09:00 the queue outside the job was nearly endless. Borders was open less than three years and while a great shop, the few times I was there it was never too busy, but a discussion on boards.ie (http:\/\/www.boards.ie\/vbulletin\/showthread.php?t=2055619961<\/a>) suggests differently. Unfortunately I didn’t get any books at this closing down sale, but it seems to me that there is a market niche: A discount book shop could do quite well in Dublin! ;-)<\/p>\n

\nRosario told me that the Ulster Bank Theatre Festival offer free tickets (up to 3 different shows) to people who volunteer some hours of their time to help with the events preparations. \nFocus Ireland is looking for 130 volunteers for their Fundraising Triathlon on Sun 02 August 2009. I did volunteer there last year and am thinking about doing it again this year if I find the time. It is not long to the day, so if you are interested to volunteer, please contact them soon. Volunteers don\u2019t need to have any triathlon\/sports experience but will play a key role in helping out with registration, directions and event safety by warning general passers by that there is a race in progress and by issuing directions to event participants.
\nVolunteers are needed from 06:00-15:00 (yes, it is VERY early, but Focus Ireland say\u00a0 that “you will be greeted with coffee\/tea and a big welcome on arrival”). Every volunteer will be provided with a Triathlon t-shirt, goodie bag, free car parking and an invitation to the BBQ after the race. They also need about 20 volunteers to help setting up the Triathlon area in Grand Canal Square on Saturday 01 August. \nGoing by the name you would think that this is a festival for gardening enthusiasts only, but that is not the case. The Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is a great family festival and with music, dance, crafts and arts there is something to do even if you are not a keen gardener. St. Anne’s park has a beautiful Rose Garden and the International Rose Trials do take place on the Friday before the Festival, but this is only ONE aspect of the whole festival. Access to the park is free and the festival runs on Sat 18 July from 10:30-18:00 and on Sun 19 July as well from 10:30-18:00. St. Anne’s Park is in Raheny on your way from Fairview to Howth. You can take the bus to Howth, just ask the driver to let you out near St. Anne’s Park, if you have never been there.

\nRenowned puppeteer Conor Lambert will entertain and create drama with his unique (Dublin) adaptation of \u2018Punch & Judy\u2019. Follow a very naughty Mr.Punch as he is left with the task of minding the house while Judy gets busy with other important chores. Mr. Punch\u2019s inability to take on the simplest of chores leads to hilarious consequences involving the Gardai!

\nOn Sun 19 July the Irish Hospice Foundation Dublin-Paris Cycle takes place. At 08:00 on Sun 105 cyclists will depart from UCD and travel approx 100km through Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Killiney, Enniskerry, Roundwood and take the coast road through Wicklow town and onto Gorey.<\/p>\n

\nIt was confirmed to me that this event is still taking place and a number of people commented in a very positive way. Unfortunately I haven’t experienced it myself yet, but it seems that it is an event worth recommending.
\nA new event has been happening on Monday nights (every Monday night) in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, 78 Grafton Street. The recently-formed music collective called the ‘Lazy Band’ is playing roots, trad and folk songs from Ireland, England, America and anything else they like. Admission is free and the bar serves during the show. Some people order up pizzas from downstairs. Laid-back atmosphere, unplugged and informal, and worth a visit! The event starts at 20:00 and goes until 22:00.<\/p>\n

\nOn Saturday and on Sunday a number of events will take place during the day and no tickets are required for these events. Jack Lynch, the organiser of the event, sent me lots of information, including a nice looking brochure, but unfortunately it is not on the Farmleigh House website and I couldn’t find it anywhere else either.<\/p>\n
\n______This is odd!!______________<\/p>\n
\nThis story is not THAT odd. It actually makes a lot of sense to turn a property in what can be sold\/let the easiest. The story is about a developer in Tallaght turning his buildings which were originally built as a 186-bed and 48-bed hotels into bedsits for approx. EUR 600.
\nBut what did surprise me was the sentence that explains that the hotel rooms have been converted into bedsits “through the addition of a kettle and a microwave”. So is that really the only difference between a bedsit and a hotel room? Strange! http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/property\/2009\/0709\/1224250305547.html<\/a><\/p>\n
\nSo prices in the private sector are in general dropping. Not drastically and not in all areas, but there is stagnation or a downward trend. Only one category of areas is completely excluded: Wherever the civil sector directly or indirectly controls the service provided, the prices are still rising. You could interpret that as (intended) stealth taxes OR the public sector really lives on a different planet and just doesn’t get it that the economic situation has changed. My bet is on the latter. Odd!!!
