I did something very very bold last night. Friends had invited me to come for dinner, I hadn’t seen them for quite some time and therefore decided to go. It was a great evening, but you know what the consequence is. The consequence is unfortunately that we all suffer because everything is running soooo late. I know it was irresponsible to go out. ;-) But you know, sometimes writing the Dublin Event Guide is a big chore and I need to break out a bit. There are lots of events in this current version, but a LOT more will have to be added. I focused for this current version a bit more on Saturday event and parked the weekday events to be added later, so I hope that will work and won’t interfere with your Saturday tooo much.<\/a><\/p>\n

With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide six weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. Recycling in Ireland – There is hope!<\/h2>\n

To get people to recycling correctly in Ireland is STILL a struggle, so many years after the introduction of recycling bins and brown bins etc. I know people who still refuse to recycle and living in an apartment I see all the time how in common bins, where no one can identify the culprits easily, the recycling contamination happens every day. All this is not helped by the fact that recycling is visible in our world, instead we regularly read how recycling waste from Ireland is found in far away countries NOT recycled.<\/a><\/p>\n

But there is hope!! Thejournal.ie ran a poll<\/a> on Friday asking if people should be fined for putting the wrong rubbish in their green bin. And out of approx. 10,000 answers the YES side got 71%. That shows a good level of passionate recyclers who can’t understand how anybody could accidentally or – even worse – intentionally get it wrong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Mother River is a photographic odyssey by the British-Chinese photographer, Yan Wang Preston along the full 6211km of the river Yangtze, China\u2019s \u2018Mother River\u2019. From the remote high Tibetan Plateau, through the Three Gorges and on to the river\u2019s end at Shanghai, this series of colour photographs captures the dramatic shifts in landscape and offers fresh perspectives on China\u2019s present-day development. Yan Wang Preston went to sixty-three locations every 100 km of the river\u2019s course and photographed there whatever she found.<\/a><\/p>\n

This exhibition is part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Typographic Dante is a series of typographic illustrations created as a response to this unfolding narrative. Each of the 34 Cantos is illustrated typographically and each book of the Divine Comedy has a different typographic style.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 12:00 and only 20 places are available.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ash Wednesday is the start of pre-Easter lent in the catholic church.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is also the start of odd “giving up” of things in the Irish society. Some give up alcohol for lent, many give up chocolate and one of the odder ones is to give up sugar in tea (but not in anything else) until Easter Sunday. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

If you see anybody with what appears to be dirt on their forehead, don’t worry. They didn’t fall and land with their face in mud, instead they went to catholic Ash Wednesday mass, where the priest applies a ash cross on their forehead to remind them that they came from ash and will return to ash again. Many people wipe the symbol off after mass, others feel they have to make a statement with it.<\/a><\/div>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino (closed until 16 March)
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Br\u00fa na B\u00f3inne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow<\/p>\n

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed in May 2016 and is sorely missed. <\/a><\/p>\n

In the “Month of La Francophonie” in Ireland, this is a talk entitled “Langue au chat, gueule du loup et chien de fa\u00efence : la langue fran\u00e7aise en images” by French linguist Bernard Cerquiglini and Hungarian lexicographer B\u00e1rdosi Vilmos. <\/a><\/p>\n

They will display the richness of the French language through a focus on its illustrated expressions, such as “donner sa langue au chat” (literally “to give one\u2019s tongue to the cat”) or “se jeter dans la gueule du loup” (“to throw yourself in the wolf\u2019s mouth”) and their meaning.<\/a><\/p>\n

That “virus” has now spread to Ed Sheeran fans? Apparently his fans are called “Sheerios”. (Not sure though if it is a flock of Sheerios or a herd of Sheerios or a gaggle of Sheerios that will be in Tower Records on Thursday night.)<\/a><\/p>\n

Sure there is nothing wrong with being a big fan and there is also nothing wrong with shopping at midnight (I have been in Tesco myself around that time when many Tesco’s in Ireland were still open 24hrs.) but the mad run or queueing for something that is NOT scarce and will be plentiful in shops on the next day, just seems odd.<\/a><\/div>\n
