This is an odd week! Not because there are very few events. No, there are LOTS of events. Nearly 220! But there is no outstanding event. Nothing where I would say you HAVE to go. There are lots of good events and that is a great thing, so I am definitely not complaining. Try something new this week. Something you normally don’t do! Ireland’s Got Curves – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

On 09 April everything Plus Size will come together for the “Ireland’s Got Curves” event near the airport. There will be Fashion Shows, Workshops, Demos, Guest Speakers, Pop-up Shops, Awards, Entertainment for women of all sizes and shapes from Size 12 and above.<\/a><\/p>\n

The National Planning Framework is an initiative by the current government to find out how we (and experts) think Ireland should or will look like in 2040. 2040 is only 23 years away, but Ireland will be unrecognisable in comparison to today. I expect that the job market in Ireland will have changed dramatically, petrol & diesel cars will be phased out and all new cars will have to be electric cars (Holland will enforce that from 2025 already and Germany from 2030!!). Will we have enough housing? Will the Metro North be finished by then? ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Mountain Walking will NOT be banned – Important Court Decision<\/h2>\n

The High Court made on Friday an EXTREMELY important decision for everybody who likes Hill Walking or Mountain Walking.<\/a><\/p>\n

In August of 2013 a Teresa Wall from Swords went for a Hill Walk in the Dublin Mountains near the Sally Gap\/Roundwood. In that area old railway sleepers (big wooden beams) are put together to form a boardwalk across wetland. But Teresa Wall had a mishap. She tripped accidentally and fell on her knee. This is nothing unusual and has happened to most of us at some stage in our life. You and I would probably hurt for a bit, maybe even have to go to a doctor, but we know that if we trip, then we didn’t pay enough attention and it was our own fault.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mrs Wall was thinking differently and must have seen an opportunity to make some money. She sued the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Circuit Court under Judge Jacqueline Linnane made the crazy decision that Wall deserved a payment of EUR 40,000 because allegedly the NPWS who put the boardwalk there was negligent because the wood had rotted at a place, which was a contributor to the fall.<\/a><\/p>\n

Luckily and rightly the High Court disagreed and overturned the decision. Teresa Wall will now get nothing and importantly it was decided that SHE was negligent and not the NPWS. A great decision to stop people from trying to make money through compensations but also extremely important because if the NPWS had been given all blame, they would have to stop people from using the boardwalks as otherwise the law suits against them would never stop.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Festival of Russian Culture is being celebrated in Dublin since 2010 with a programme of music, dance, film and talks. The main festival locations will be the Hugh Lane Gallery and the libraries in Dublin. The festival will run from 19-26 February and the Family Day on Sunday 26 Feb in the National Show Centre in Swords is one of the highlights of the week, however unlike in some previous years, it is unfortunately not a free event anymore (EUR 5).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?<\/a><\/p>\n

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelg\u00e4nger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Festival of Russian Culture is being celebrated in Dublin since 2010 with a programme of music, dance, film and talks. The main festival locations will be the Hugh Lane Gallery and the libraries in Dublin. The Festival of Russian Culture is being celebrated in Dublin since 2010 with a programme of music, dance, film and talks. The main festival locations will be the Hugh Lane Gallery and the libraries in Dublin. The festival will run from 19-26 February and the Family Day on Sunday 26 Feb in the National Show Centre in Swords is one of the highlights of the week, however unlike in some previous years, it is unfortunately not a free event anymore (EUR 5).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Festival of Russian Culture is being celebrated in Dublin since 2010 with a programme of music, dance, film and talks. The main festival locations will be the Hugh Lane Gallery and the libraries in Dublin. The festival will run from 19-26 February and the Family Day on Sunday 26 Feb in the National Show Centre in Swords is one of the highlights of the week, however unlike in some previous years, it is unfortunately not a free event anymore (EUR 5).<\/a><\/p>\n

Why should we raise children with more than one language? Do bilingual children get confused? Does bilingualism cause language delay? Is it ok to teach my child a foreign language I learned in school? Is English more important than our family language? Which strategies should we use at home?<\/a><\/p>\n

The speaker is Dr Francesca La Morgia. She has been working with bilingual and multilingual families for the last 10 years. The Festival of Russian Culture is being celebrated in Dublin since 2010 with a programme of music, dance, film and talks. The main festival locations will be the Hugh Lane Gallery and the libraries in Dublin. The festival will run from 19-26 February and the Family Day on Sunday 26 Feb in the National Show Centre in Swords is one of the highlights of the week, however unlike in some previous years, it is unfortunately not a free event anymore (EUR 5).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Festival of Russian Culture is being celebrated in Dublin since 2010 with a programme of music, dance, film and talks. The main festival locations will be the Hugh Lane Gallery and the libraries in Dublin. Does the Irish Government know what “Brexit” means? – Irish 10 year plan in response to Brexit
<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Wednesday (15 Feb) Newstalk reported that the Taoiseach will announce a 10 year plan in response to Brexit here<\/a>. I expected to read about a plan that would talk about supporting the exploration of new markets for Irish companies selling currently into the UK; a plan for getting tourists from elsewhere to visit Ireland to make up for the short fall of tourists from the UK and a plan to deepen our relationships with the other EU countries (#WhoNeedsTheUKAnyway).<\/p>\n

But I certainly didn’t expect to read about a plan that will “focus on areas such as investments in roads, public transport, and energy.” Something MAJOR went wrong here! One of us, either Enda Kenny or myself, has NO clue what “Brexit” means?!<\/a><\/p>\n

My understanding is that “Brexit” means that once it happens, one of 27 countries, Britain, which is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, will leave the EU. That country won’t pay any more money into the EU, but will also not get any money from the EU anymore. All contracts that currently regulate relationships with other countries in the EU will stop being valid for the exiting country and everything has to be arranged new with this country. Ireland does a lot of business with Britain, so there will be some impact, but the ONLY area Brexit will impact Ireland is in matters that have to do with borders and markets as fas as we currently know.<\/a><\/p>\n

How does have focus on “investments in roads, public transport (!!!!!) and energy” have anything to do with a Brexit? Enda Kenny is quoted saying “That new Plan will show how we will invest in roads, in public transport, in energy, in water, in schools, in higher education and in hospitals and health facilities. It will include detailed, funded plans to complete the national road network, including links between Dublin and Derry and Donegal, and to accelerate delivery of critical public transport infrastructure.<\/a><\/p>\n

“It will include substantial investment in the ports and airports that Ireland will need as a successful, global trading nation. And it will support the achievement of our international climate change obligations and our national objectives for sustainable development and environmental protection.”<\/a><\/p>\n

I accept that streets to Derry (in Northern Ireland) could be affected by a Brexit, but how does Brexit affect public transport? Or education? Or hospitals? Or national objectives (the clue is in the word, Mr Kenny!!) for sustainable development and environmental protection?<\/a><\/p>\n

Has Endy Kenny lost it completely? NOTHING of that plan will prepare Ireland better for a Brexit than doing nothing. Now having such a plan is a VERY good idea for a country and it is surprising that this was not considered anyway, but needed a Brexit as a trigger. Is it a matter of “…we only look after our own country if another country leaves the EU”?<\/a><\/p>\n
