There are still a good few Chinese New Year Festival events, but the best one that is suitable for everyone is the Family Day on Sunday in the CHQ Building. During the week, Green Drinks Dublin is happening again, but the topic is not the most exciting this time. MUCH more interesting will be the new Science Gallery exhibition, though. With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide three weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)<\/a><\/p>\n

Last year of Dublin Food Co-op in its current form!?<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Food Co-op, a great cooperative for people that are interested in better quality food (organic & fairtrade & environmentally-friendly), but possibly even more relevant for all of us, a super venue for events like the Dublin Flea Market, the Fusion Sundays World Culture Market, the Pure Vintage Market and a few other flea market-type events. The Food Co-op’s premises in Dublin 8 is the home for flea market-type events on about 44 Sundays every year.<\/a><\/p>\n

But the rising tide with increased property prices and new opportunities for developers means that the owner of the building wants to built something else there and consequently the Food Co-op only got another ONE year lease. So by the end of 2017 they will have to move somewhere else and nobody knows yet if the new premises will still be close to the City Centre and\/or if they will be suitable for other events like flea markets.<\/a><\/p>\n

A signature campaign was started to request the Taoiseach not to go to Washington on St. Patrick’s Day to bring Trump the traditional Shamrock pot and the simple message is<\/a><\/p>\n

Mother River is a photographic odyssey by the British-Chinese photographer, Yan Wang Preston along the full 6211km of the river Yangtze, China\u2019s \u2018Mother River\u2019. From the remote high Tibetan Plateau, through the Three Gorges and on to the river\u2019s end at Shanghai, this series of colour photographs captures the dramatic shifts in landscape and offers fresh perspectives on China\u2019s present-day development. Yan Wang Preston went to sixty-three locations every 100 km of the river\u2019s course and photographed there whatever she found.<\/a><\/p>\n

This exhibition is part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Super Bowl LI (51) is one of the biggest sports spectaculars in the world this year. It will take place in Houston, Texas and this year the two teams playing against each other are the New England Partiots and the Atlanta Falcons.<\/a><\/p>\n

The game starts at 23:30 and continues for up to 4 hours.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since the Super Bowl is still increasing its audience on our side of the ocean, many pubs will screen the event live. However, make sure that they will show the FULL game. Because it is a Sunday evening, the long running time and the pub rules clash, which doesn’t allow pubs to stay open that late unless they have an extension. A few years ago, some pubs kicked the customers out at half-time, but I seriously hope that doesn’t happen anymore.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the Super Bowls events are free screenings, other are Super Bowl Parties, which are typically not free and often organised by one of the Dublin-based American Football Teams.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tea drinking in many Asian cultures is highly ceremonial, especially in China where it first originated. It was first introduced as a medicine and food spice, but has now become the beverage of choice and a way of life. The history of Tea in the Western world was remarkable in that it inadvertently brought about major social changes in China, precipitating the Opium wars of the 1840s and leading to the fastest sailing ships of their day – the Tea Clippers.<\/a><\/p>\n

Central to this installation is a group of new film works in which Lloyd continues to probe the architecture and ambiences of particular places. She integrates sounds and images in ways that challenge typical viewing conventions \u2013 sliding from interpretable scenes into \u2018abstract\u2019 formulations of colour, shape and light.<\/a><\/p>\n

Car Insurance Madness in Ireland! Are they all incompetent?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

I needed to renew my car insurance and this is always a good bit of work. Since I made some significant savings a few years ago, I always compare as many as possible insurances every year to see if there is a better offer somewhere.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last year I didn’t change the insurer, but this year it went a little different. My car is a Mazda with 1.8l and it is 9 years old. I have a full no claims bonus and have my drivers license since I was 18 so for quite a long time. I also am driving in Ireland for many many years, BUT I still have a German drivers license and annoyingly I was caught in last May speeding! Yes, I did drive 6km (!!) faster than allowed and got 3 very very annoying penalty points.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the framework and the points and the German license do make things a little less smooth.<\/a><\/p>\n

The saga started with AIG (last year’s insurer sending me a renewal offer for EUR 780. Not too bad I thought. A few days later they rang me and asked me if I was interested in renewing, so I said I was but hadn’t decided yet. The guy suggested that he will check if there is anything better than EUR 780 he can do and off he went with all his questions. But suddenly we hit a hurdle: He asked me if I had an Irish drivers license and I said that I still (as for the last four years I was insured with them) had my German license. He claims that that was never on their system (which is rubbish) and he would have to recalculate the price. After a few moments he told me that instead of EUR 780, now the best offer was EUR 1040! Wow! Not having had any accident for many years but having a German insurance suddenly increased my risk by nearly EUR 300? How can that happen? He claimed it is because I got my license driving on the other side of the road. But the fact that I am driving nearly longer on the (wrong ;-) ) Irish side of the road than on the German side didn’t impress at all. Well, there was no going back! AIG was not to be my trusted partner in the future, so I started comparing in earnest and I found VERY interesting things.<\/a><\/p>\n

I found, for example, that Liberty Insurance is TOTALLY incompetent (or alternatively very greedy OR all the other insurances are the incompetent ones). Why? Well, the insurance cost is meant to be calculated based on the risk that you pose to the insurance and you would expect more or less the same price from EVERY insurance, because it can’t be that you are VERY risky for one and not at all risky for the other insurance. But Liberty seems to live on a different planet then the others. They calculated the cost as EUR 1667 !! Wow! That is even more than AIG wanted after the “change”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Well, since most others quoted around EUR 780-950, I new that AIG and certainly Liberty were completely mad. (HOW can Liberty get any customers with prices like that???)<\/a><\/p>\n

I also found out that the insurance quote comparison sites are NOT much use. Chill and Sheridan and Compare Insurance all quoted higher prices than I could get elsewhere. So don’t rely on the quality of the comparisons.<\/a><\/p>\n

AXA was also madly expensive at EUR 1263. Another outlier.<\/a><\/p>\n

The lowest quotes I got at first from 123.ie and Aviva and I nearly had decided for 123.ie, but then I remembered that I had forgotten to check with Allianz directly. In the past Allianz was always too expensive and I had already received Allianz quotes this time through the price comparison sites. (Compare Insurance quote EUR 993 and Sheridan quoted 853 – How can there be such a difference for the same insurance for the same conditions??? 140 Euro!?)<\/a><\/p>\n

But then I rang Allianz and I got SOME surprise! They only quoted EUR 604!! That was by FAR the lowest price (but how can it be so much lower than the Allianz price that Sheridan and Compare Insurance quoted???). And compare this to the mad Liberty Insurance once more?!<\/a><\/p>\n

So, you can guess who I signed the contract with!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Now, my parameters are different than yours and therefore you could have a completely different result. So I am not saying that you will get the lowest or the highest quote from the same insurances I mention here. But what I am saying is that the work that you have to put into comparing can easily be worth your time! EUR 400 less than the AIG quote? I am happy to compare prices for 2 or 3 hours for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

So, COMPARE COMPARE COMPARE and do NOT trust ANYBODY in this business. I think they ALL have no clue!<\/a><\/p>\n
