“Pieta Palooza: A Night of Music & Marvels” is a fundraising night in aid of suicide awareness charity Pieta House organised by Ruth Cotter.<\/a><\/p>\n

With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide two weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)<\/a><\/p>\n

Last “Picture Clinic” in the National Gallery<\/h2>\n

For years the “Picture Clinic” in the National Gallery was an monthly event when National Gallery Curators would appraise paintings, prints and drawings brought into the Gallery for free.<\/a><\/p>\n

But the National Gallery is re-jigging their public programmes and with that the Picture Clinic in February is the LAST Picture Clinic in the National Gallery. The Picture Clinic will be discontinued and you will have to go to fine art auction houses to find out the value of your art work from now on.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are a number of great live music venues in Dublin that regularly run free events with good bands but that recently got worse and worse with the information policies about the gigs. All three pubs listed above (and there are a few more) once were REALLY good letting their customers know about gigs, but lately they have NO or very sparse information on their websites or Facebook Pages. They don’t update the information anymore and seem quite uninterested in keeping people informed.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mother River is a photographic odyssey by the British-Chinese photographer, Yan Wang Preston along the full 6211km of the river Yangtze, China\u2019s \u2018Mother River\u2019. From the remote high Tibetan Plateau, through the Three Gorges and on to the river\u2019s end at Shanghai, this series of colour photographs captures the dramatic shifts in landscape and offers fresh perspectives on China\u2019s present-day development. Yan Wang Preston went to sixty-three locations every 100 km of the river\u2019s course and photographed there whatever she found.<\/a><\/p>\n

This exhibition is part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

Remembering Harold Sloan (Bohemian Football Club)<\/h2>\n

One hundred years ago this month, Harold Sloan, a former captain of Bohemian FC and Irish International, was killed on the battlefields of the First World War’s Western Front. Harold was born in Ashtown and in 1901 scored the first-ever goal at Dalymount Park. He was just one of over 40 Bohemian FC members who served in WWI, but was sadly not the only one to lose his life.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday, Bohemian FC will host a talk on the life of Harold Sloan and the experiences of some of the dozens of former Bohemians during the First World War.<\/a><\/p>\n

Historian P\u00e1draig Yeates, Ciaran Priestley, a Bohemian FC member whose original research has brought the memory of Sloan back to the consciousness of Bohemian supporters today and Gerard Farrell, who has researched the war experiences of a number of other prominent Bohemians from history will be the speakers. <\/a><\/p>\n

The talk will be followed by a Q&A and light refreshments and admission is free. Attendees are asked to consider making a contribution to the Bohemian Foundation.<\/a><\/div>\n

RetroGaming.ie are running a SNES (Super Ninendo Entertainment System) gaming event in the Back Page pub. The main event with a Super Mario Kart Tournament and a Street Fighter II Tournament is not free (EUR 7 per game or EUR 12 for two).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Temple Bar Trad Fest takes place from Wednesday until Sunday (25-29 January). The programme consists of (non-free) headline gigs and (non-free) Tradfringe events, (free but now sold out) Front Row gigs and in addition to that there is a Music Trail, Tradkids events and Live at the Hub gigs.<\/a><\/p>\n

+ The Music Trail are daily gigs in 15 pubs in Temple Bar and neighbourhood. Many of these gigs are the regular gigs that would take place in these pubs anyway and there is no separate gig schedule available it seems. The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Today is “Imbolc”, a celtic festival that is usually described as the first day of Spring and if you are a Celt or a Pagan, you can celebrate the start of Spring today. I am sure that for you 01 November is the first day of the year (That’s how the Celts did it!). And a new days starts for you undoubtedly at Dusk\/Sunset and NOT at midnight!<\/a><\/p>\n

If you are NOT a celt or pagan, then you are like most of us for whom the Seasons now are defined by their meteorological aspects and based on Meteorology, 01 February is NOT the first day of Spring, instead, we will start that season on 01 March. (In the rest of Europe Spring starts on 21 March at Equinox, but let’s try to leave that complication out of it. ;-) )<\/a><\/p>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino (Closed until mid-March)
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Br\u00fa na B\u00f3inne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow<\/p>\n

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. <\/a><\/p>\n

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.<\/a><\/div>\n

Beyond Leaving is an exhibition from Mon 14 Nov to Mar 2017 in the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar and the lecture “Beyond Leaving-a perspective on current Irish emigration and return migration” with the curator David Monahan will take place on Wednesday.<\/a><\/p>\n

David Monahan\u2019s “Beyond Leaving” is the documentation of the departures of over 120 people in 2010 as they left Ireland after the global financial crash. Now, some years later, Monahan has taken a closer look at a small group of these people working in collaboration with them through photography, Skype conversation and video. This show tries to describe and understand the distance between expectation and reality for the current Irish emigrants. Admission to the exhibition is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains often on some Saturdays or Sundays, but also on other days during the month. Snobbery in Dublin stops people from getting lower priced groceries!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once upon a time I was forced to buy my groceries in Superquinn. That was even before Tesco was in Ireland and before Aldi and Lidl arrived. Then I remember the week the first Aldi in Parnell Street opened. There were queues outside the shop and inside you couldn’t use a trolley because we had to walk through the shops like ducks in a row because there were soooo many people inside.<\/a><\/p>\n

Nearly every Aldi and Lidl in Dublin (and there are MANY now) is busy and the market share of the two shop chains keeps growing, but there are some people who still think that they are too good to shop in Aldi and Lidl. But this snobbery is crumbling when you experience the high quality goods for SIGNIFICANTLY lower prices than others charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

Oddly, though, when it comes to setting up new shops, some parts of Dublin are still totally against an Aldi or Lidl in their neighbourhood and I don’t believe for a minute that this is because of the dying village centres (they are already dead since Centra, Spar and Starbucks took over) or because of the REAL traffic increase. Maybe the PERCEIVED increase and this always reminds me of the stupid idea that Fingal County had when they limited the opening hours if Ikea near Ballymun and tried to force the shop to charge for parking during peak hours to avoid that looming traffic chaos that would bring the M50 to a stand still. Nothing like that ever happened and Ikea luckily was able to change the Fingal County rules.<\/a><\/p>\n

So it is either a total misjudgement regarding traffic OR it is snobbery and I think ultimately it is the snobbery that is the reason for the NOs in Castleknock and Clonsilla that is described in this article http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/lidl-2-3201010-Jan2017\/<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, both Aldi and Lidl have managed to create pretty and very well integrated shops in some areas, so the look of the shops is not a good enough reason anymore to reject them.<\/a><\/p>\n
