If the same happens as last year then there will be a BIG exodus from Dublin to Punchestown for the next three days. And half the Dublin Event Guide Community will be part of it. ;-) Let’s hope that you will all have a wonderful time there with as little rain as possible, but don’t worry about us in Dublin, we have a good few things to do as well as you can see further down.
And there is another hope: Hopefully Oxegen will be better organised than some of the recent open air concerts. Going by the heat of discussion in discussion groups and forums (especially on www.boards.ie), the concert at Slane Castle and the AC/DC concert in June could have done with some (or maybe a LOT of) improvement. Since there is a common denominator between Oxegen, Slane and the AC/DC concert – they are all organised by MCD!! – let’s hope that the recent experiences are not repeated this weekend.

Last Monday I had a chat with Simon Maher live on radio. ;-) Simon does the radio programme “Phantom Daily” on Phantom 105.2. It was an enjoyable experience and interestingly I am listening to a lot more Phantom programmes since then than before. ;-) The chat was about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and a good number of Phantom Daily listeners have joined us during the week. A big welcome to all the new subscribers!! We are approaching the 5000 “barrier” with big steps and as it looks at the moment, my goal of 5000 by October will definitely be reached, probably we have grown already beyond 5000 by then. Hey, “the more the merrier” is the saying, so tell all your friends about this newsletter and ask them to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Unfortunately I didn’t manage to record the interview and it seems that Phantom 105.2 doesn’t put ALL good ;-) interviews online as a podcast. Did anyone by coincidence record the interview? I would love to have a copy of it, if possible. Pls send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com if you can help.

Just as a clarification, because someone asked during the week, I want to explain that there are two categories of free events that I typically do not include. The first category is DJ events and the second category is regular sports events. The reason for this is the pure number of events. If I tried to include every free DJ set/gig that is taking place in Dublin over a weekend, I would have to add probably 5 more pages. And the same goes for sports events. If there is a big and somewhat extraordinary event taking place, I am more than happy to include it. Just send me a mail if you hear about something or are involved and if you think this event is worth being included and I will see what I can do. ;-)

Thanks for all the supportive messages regarding my back problems last week. A week has passed, the pain is nearly all gone, I found a brilliant Osteopath and learned something new about my back/spine that will be useful for many years to come! SO the little problem last week, turned into a big advantage.
[ad]
——-
Please help spreading the word about this newsletter. They have all realised that going to free events saves a LOT of money AND is good fun. And have decided that contributing to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free) is cool. ;-) If you don’t know how much a fair amount is, think that way: 1 Euro per month (which is just 25 cent per newsletter) is not a lot, but it would help hugely with the production and the cost for this newsletter. If 1 Euro per month is a lot to you, then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you! For the rest, it would be great if I could count on your 12 Euro per year!! Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link http://www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation.
This Event Guide is a hobby and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations! I spend more than 25 hours per week (for some people that is a half-day job!) on writing and researching it.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______________________________
______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
ALIVE AND KICKING – LIFE AND BUSINESS COACHING
Offering Coaching on a 1-2-1 basis in person or by phone. In addition I will definitely go to the Infectious exhibition in the Science Gallery. I was there once, but had too little time and this week is the last opportunity. If I were a child, I would try to get my parents to bring me to the Children’s Book Day in Farmleigh House, but luckily (for the parents) not too many children read this newsletter. ;-) On Wednesday the Xpresso Arts Festival wills start and it sounds really interesting. Oh and if there is any way you can get easily to Bray, have a look at the great Bray Summer Fest programme.

______________________________
______Competition______________

FLAMENCO WORKSHOP – TICKET COMPETITION
Do you remember Solo Flamenco? It is a team of Flamenco dancers who regularly provide classes and who have a number if times in the past have made tickets available for competitions. I know a few of the group and have seen them dancing and believe me if I tell you that they are a) a lovely bunch and b) are really good Flamenco dancers. Solo Flamenco is now organising another workshop. This time the “expert” at the workshop is Concha Jareño. Concha will be in Dublin because she will perform a Flamenco show in the Button Factory on the weekend 18/19 July and on the same weekend she will run a workshop with Solo Flamenco. If you are interested in her performance (dance performance + concert) in the Button Factory, check this http://www.flamencoindalo.com/en/events/details/1-conchajareno. Tickets are EUR 22. For the workshop Solo Flamenco has made a pair of tickets available and they are suggesting that it is suitable for a beginner with some previous dance experience. I guess what that means is that it is not really the right event for me (Two left feet!), but the rest of you are ok to go. ;-) If you are interested in winning a pair of tickets for this event practising Flamenco with the hugely talented Concha Jareno you have to send me a mail. The tickets have value of EUR 100 and it is a unique opportunity to train with Concha. The workshop will be on Sat 18 July from 12:00-14:45 in the Dance House Studios not far from Busaras/Liberty Hall. For all details about the event check www.flamencoyalegria.net. To bein with a chance to win the tickets send a mail to dublineventguide@hmail.com with CONCHA in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by Wed 15 July at 17:00.

–Advertisement————————————
NEW ADVERTISEMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN EVENT GUIDE
If you want to let the Dublin Event Guide Community know about your products or services, you can do that now on a regular and repeated basis by advertising in the Event Guide. Advertisement can be by text – like this note – or with a picture/graphics. The cost for advertisement are definitely affordable and you donate to the production of the Event Guide at the same time.
Contact me via dublineventguide@gmail.com to find out more.
——————————————————–

DUBLIN ON A SHOESTRING – BOOK COMPETITION
The publishers of “Dublin on a Shoestring”, the latest version of this guidebook for cost conscious visitors AND inhabitants of Dublin made 3 copies of this book available for a competition. The book includes categories dealing with Must see places; great value pubs, clubs and venues; eating out; shopping; free stuff; where to stay and “Secret Dublin”. It is all about ideas for free and low-budget things to do in Dublin, has 264 pages and costs EUR 9.99. You can buy it all good bookshops or order it from one of the editors: http://benmurnane.com/?p=598. I didn’t get a chance to do the draw for this competition yet, so I will announce the name of the winners next week.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______________________________
______Dublin News______________

Not many “Dublin News” this week…I think I have to get out more. :-P

BUY AND SELL IN TROUBLE
For many years (mainly BEFORE the emergence of the Internet) the magazine “Buy and Sell” was the main vehicle to sell household items and cars etc privately. It was printed weekly, putting an ad in was free (if I remember it right) but you had to buy the magazine. With the “arrival” of the Internet, a printed publication became more and more unnecessary and Buy and Sell felt that immediately. They tried to move to an online way of doing their business, but offline models don’t work well online. If placing an ad is free and you can’t charge for people checking the ads online, suddenly there is not much earning potential left. Surprisingly they are still selling 31500 copies, but up to 600,000 visits to the website shows the future. For Buy and Sell the future is not tooo bright. An examiner was appointed and now a survival plan has been put together. The part that surprises me most is that the reason for the examinership is apparently not the current revenue but instead the fact that they have debts of 18.3 million. :-O Can anybody tell me how a small newspaper company with 64 employees that prints externally can manage to accumulate a debt of 18.3 million?? Amazing! And how did they think they would ever be able to pay that back? http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0708/buyandsell.html Economic challenging times definitely reveal the talent and skills of managers.

SANDWICHES DON’T PAY – O’BRIEN’S IN EXAMINERSHIP
I don’t want to turn this newsletter in a “companies in trouble”-newsletter, but if established “institutions” get into difficulties then it is worth reporting, I think. Another company that now went into examinership is “O’Briens Sandwich Bar”. This time the examinership seems to be an attempt to put landlords under pressure to reduce the rent and I guess this makes a certain amount of sense, but if you consider -as reported two weeks ago – that O’Briens apparently was prepared to pay more than EUR 190,000 per year for a tiny shop in Grafton Street, then you have to wonder how they ever could have agreed to a rental contract for that amount. Or is/was it maybe our fault for being prepared to pay crazy prices for nothing more than a “cheap” sandwich? http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0709/obriens.html

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4000+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______________________________
______Exhibitions_______________

VINCENT KEELING – OISIN GALLERY
An exhibition of oil paintings by Vincent Keeling at the Oisin Gallery is taking place from Thurs 09 July until Sun 12 July. The fact that the venue closes already at 14:00 on Saturdays and does NOT open on Sundays does make it a bit difficult for most people to go to exhibitions. So today I am listing this exhibition on a Friday and maybe you find some time if Temple Bar is not too far from your work. The exhibition will continue until 31 October 2009, so there is another bit of time (Open: Mon-Fri 10:00-17:00, Sat 10:00-14:00).
“If ever you go to Dublin town” is an exhibition of evocative photographs by Elinor Wiltshire chronicling Dubliners as they worked, played, shopped and prayed during the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Limerick, Elinor Wiltshire (nee O’Brien) founded the Green Studios on St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, with her husband Reginald Wiltshire in the 1950s. Over a period of about fifteen years, using a Rolleiflex camera, Elinor Wiltshire captured images of a changing city and its people.
Her photographs reveal an artist’s eye for the beauty that exists in everyday life – shoppers in Cumberland Street’s busy second-hand market; summer outings on Sandymount Strand; exuberant scenes of All Ireland Football Finals fans at railway stations; Corpus Christi processions through the city of Dublin.
The National Photographic Archive is on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar, Dublin 2. http://www.nli.ie/en/national-photographic-archive.aspx

———Pre-Announcements————————

This section contains lots of events this week that happen in the future some of them require free tickets and it is mentioned where this is the case. This is a much to frequent complaint when it comes to anything the public sector is meant to look after. In this case it is about something I read during the week: In September 2000 a detailed recommendation (http://www.transport.ie/upload/general/2648-0.pdf) was made to set up an integrated ticketing system for public transport. It makes absolutely no sense that for Luas, Dart and Bus you need three separate tickets and allegedly the government had a preference to introduce this integrated ticketing system in 2002. In the report it says that is it unlikely that it will be introduced in 2002, but it is kind of suggested that 2003 might be more realistic.
Now, just 9 years after the report was issued, the Rail Procurement Agency announced proudly that at the end of 2010 an integrated ticketing system will be launched. http://www.rpa.ie/en/news/Pages/IntegratedSmartCardTicketingInGreaterDublinArea.aspx Ahh, you probably think, the just couldn’t get their act together and “sat on their hands” in the last 9 years. Yes, that is what I thought at first. But then I found out that since the launch in 2002 the incredible amount of EUR 18.6 million was spent on “project management, design and development of the system”. http://e-edition.metroireland.ie/2009/07/06/?p=6 (left page top left article “One year wait for Dublin smart-card”.
Are you as speechless about this as I am? Is there ANYBODY in charge? EUR 18.6 million has been taken from you and me and have been wasted and nobody has to take the responsibility. VERY VERY odd! Imagine if you worked in a shop and took 1 Euro from the till!? You would be fired IMMEDIATELY.

—————–
Hmm, when I started writing there was daylight outside and now when I am finished there is daylight again. Another night gone. :-O I wonder when I will get a chance to catch up with all the sleep that this Event Guide costs me. ;-)
Have a wonderful weekend either at Oxegen or in Dublin with all the events happening. Enjoy!

–Joerg

*********************************************
For donations please go to http://www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
**********************************************
You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until the beginning of 2009 in pubs and other venues.
Copyright 2009 by Joerg Steegmueller.
***********************************************

——————————————————————— | DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE (for Free Events) No. 108 | 10 July 2009 Subscribers: 4491 ——————————————————————— Hi all!
