This is the big Christmas Market weekend. There are markets everywhere and I Hope you checked them out at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com<\/a> because this flippin’ edition is running late again. I had PLENTY of time to put it together, but I constantly fell asleep in front of my Laptop and was not able to work as hard as I should have. Working through the night is no problem on some days, but on other days I find it impossible to keep my eyes open.<\/p>\n

The hugely popular seasonal radio station “Dublin Christmas FM” will be on air until 25 Dec. is back. The station will play Christmas songs day and night from now until 25 Dec via the Internet ( www.christmasfm.com<\/a> ) and on FM frequency 105.2 (in Dublin). Arpillera (Patchwork Pictures) is the term used for the colourful pictures made in many parts of Latin America, by appliqu\u00e9ing scraps of fabric onto a larger rustic (hessian) backing. During the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile they became politically significant since working-class women used them to depict the reality of life under military rule. Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. A tenement is a substandard multi-family house in the city centre that is usually old and occupied by poor people and in Dublin families lived in tenements from the mid-19th century, throughout the 20th century and until the 1970s. Over 25,000 people were living in Dublin\u2019s tenements in 1913.<\/a><\/p>\n

In one location, in 14 Henrietta Street, the 1901 and 1911 census records indicate that 17 families totalling 100 people lived in this one house. And the one street was home to over 850 men, women and children at its most crowded.<\/a><\/p>\n

We would call that today “3rd World Conditions” and it lasted in Ireland until the 1970s!!<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin City Council have now decided to develop 14 Henrietta Street into a museum to explain tenement life. The museum will open in 2017 and on Saturday people who grew up in tenement houses are invited to come to the Wood Quay venue between the Dublin City Council offices and Christ Church and tell their story and bring memorabilia like rent books, ration books, tableware, pictures & photographs, letters etc. The memorabilia will be recorded, photographed and given back.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Remembering the Tenements Day” invites everybody who lived\/grew up in Dublin’s tenements. Admission is obviously free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/a><\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Empty Terminal 2 – Where is everybody?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The economy has improved again in the last few years and there are jobs available in Ireland if you are in the right sector. And while we still hear about emigration and many of us know some people that have temporarily or permanently emigrated, the departure from Ireland seems to have slowed down.<\/a><\/p>\n

But last Wednesday, I was wondering if everybody had left and I arrived to an empty Ireland. I flew from London Gatwick to Dublin with Aer Lingus and we arrived at Dublin airport just before 20:00. We landed at Terminal 1 and – nonseniscally – had to treck the loooong walk across to Terminal 2 to get out of the airport. At the passport check there were no queues and only two immigration officers sat there. When we arrived in the baggage claim hall, the place was deserted. There was nobody else around than the people from our half-empty plane. No other planes arriving. Nobody at customs. And after leaving the baggage claims hall there were just about 5 people sitting on the benches where you wait for the arrival of your loved ones. But they were not waiting for anybody, they read books!<\/a><\/p>\n

What a surreal experience to arrive in a seemingly abandoned airport! Where was everybody on Wednesday evening???<\/a><\/div>\n

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
