It is a busy week with lots of events, but with no big headline events. So a good time to explore something new. Well, the first Christmas Market is happening already this week and there will be lots more from now on.<\/p>\n

And the Dublin Event Guide is late again. This time I had a completely new problem. My server was not reacting for ages this morning. There is always something to keep things interesting.<\/p>\n

I publish again in two stages: First on the smartphone app and on the website, then more events will be added and in about 2 hours the mail will be sent.<\/p>\n

This is the FINAL version.<\/p>\n

Chrismas Markets are starting<\/h2>\n

The first Christmas Market in 2016 takes place this weekend already. It is definitely much too early for me, but maybe some of you can’t wait to get the Christmas Shopping done asap? If you are not in the mood yet, either go to get in the mood OR stay away so that you won’t get annoyed.<\/p>\n

The first Christmas Light ceremony in Dublin is on the following weekend, on 13 November. Still much too early, but Christmas is early this year! Because Christmas Eve is on a Saturday, the first of advent is already on 27 November.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Magzine Fort in Phoenix Park – News!<\/h2>\n
\n

After many many years of being boarded up and completely inaccessible, the OPW decided this summer to run guided tours in the Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park. Initially tours on Friday and Sunday were planned until the end of October. Three tours per day with a max of 20 people per tour. Soon it turned out that this was not enough and it was extended to four tours per day.<\/p>\n

The end of October came and the interest was still high and a great decision was made: The tours will continue through the winter months!! They will be reduced to one day per week, but that is absolutely fine. The continuation is much appreciated and I strongly recommend that you take the opportunity. Tickets are limited to 20 per tour and you have to get your ticket in the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day. Pre-booking is not possible.<\/p>\n

First City Centre Pubs for Wetherspoon?<\/h2>\n
\n

The cheap-drink pub chain Wetherspoon from the UK is working hard on getting permission for two City Centre pubs in Dublin.<\/p>\n

One location is in Camden Street and is a former homeless hostel that is in a total dilapidated state for quit some time. Wetherspoon bought it two years ago and planned to turn it into a hotel and pub but was battling objections for a while until Dublin City Council now granted planning permission for a multi-million Euro renovation of the place.<\/p>\n

The second site is in Lower Abbey Street, where they bought the former Permanent TSB bank, a building that is from the 1830s, (beside the National Lottery building) and the neighbouring former Baptist Chapel of a similar age. It will take another while until planning for these two sites will be approved.<\/p>\n

Good-Bye JJ Smyth!<\/h2>\n

It has been confirmed now that JJ Smyth’s in Aungier Street, Dublin’s only dedicated Jazz and Blues live venue has been sold and will close this month. It seems that the last day might be 20 November. The venue will re-open – probably after extensive renovations – but it will not be a live music venue anymore as it seems.<\/p>\n

Sad to see another live music venue go and for Jazz fans and Jazz musicians it is even more painful because they are now kinda homeless.<\/p>\n

This exhibition focuses on personal stories of individual Irish men who fought at the Battle of the Somme from July – November 1916 (mainly serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers). Some were killed, others injured and the ones who survived unscathed returned to an Ireland which was radically different following the Easter Rising in April 1916.<\/p>\n

The exhibition includes photographs, medals, uniforms and other original artefacts – including audio recordings from selected letters and diaries from soldiers describing life in the trenches to loved ones back home. Interview footage from the RT\u00c9 Archives provides further eye-witness testimony.<\/p>\n

Her paintings\/drawings look interesting and intriguing. The description of the exhibition however doesn’t explain much apart from the fact that she was influenced by her shamanic dance practice and by finding her soulmate when she created the art works.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/p>\n

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n

Thesis in 3 is the Elevator Pitch for a PhD or – in other words – a research showcase and competition for research students all over Ireland. On Monday the National Final will take place in the Sugar Club.<\/p>\n

Every research student has just 3 slides and 3 minutes to explain an entire thesis. The competition is designed to showcase the world-class research happening in Ireland in bite-sized chunks.<\/p>\n

The event is hosted by Claire O’Connell from Silicone Republic and the judges are Ann O\u2019Dea (Silicone Republic), Ruth Freeman (Science Foundation Ireland) and Paul Melia (Irish Independent). Speakers are judged on the content, clarity, and charisma of their presentations, with prizes awarded for the top three speakers as well as an award for the audience\u2019s favourite.<\/p>\n

The Women War and Peace book features 23 women\u2019s stories from WWII including women who promoted liberty and actively campaigned against Fascism and Nazism and advocated for peace. Pay Demands – The start of an unstable and damaging period?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

It started all with the LUAS Drivers who demanded a crazy increase in their salaries. They didn’t get what they wanted, but they got an increase. Next were the Dublin Bus Drivers, then the Gardai and in the meantime the TDs got also a nice increase of about 9,000 per year. Then the teachers. And they will all get less than they want, but importantly, they will get SOME increase.<\/p>\n

With all this, is it a surprise that suddenly EVERYONE in the public sector wants more money? But is it justified? Or justifiable?On Friday FIVE (!!!) more unions announced that they will be looking for pay increases as the Irish Times reported here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many think that some of the pay increase demands are totally out of control, but in other areas it might make more sense. The problem however is that once the unions smell “blood” they will go after pay increases like a bloodhound. Justified or not!<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that NOBODY needs a union unless there is a dispute, so it is very much in their interest to create a dispute! It justifies their existence and keep the union bosses in a very well paid job.<\/p>\n

Any type of unrest is bad for the competitiveness of a country and damages the reputation. So it is in the interest of Ireland to sort out all unrest as fast as possible. An unstable period would be severely damaging in the context of attracting new investment from abroad. But it also doesn’t make sense to give in all cases. Where the salaries are too low, they should be increased, but where unions demand unjustifiable increases, the government should have the courage to refuse ANY increase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
