BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND! Hurray! Normally that means that there are a few LESS events, but this week it coincides with Halloween and there are LOADS of events. So the Dublin Event Guide is full! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, Halloween is not over yet, but I chose this headline to get you used to what will happen rapidly from next week! We will definitely talk about Christmas a LOT from next week and there is NO time to waste because the first Christmas Market is happening NEXT WEEK! And the Christmas lights in Dublin will also be switched on from next week as far as I know.<\/a><\/p>\n

So if you are a Christmas denier, get over it! And I say that in the nicest possible way!! :-)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

JJ Smyth to close doors! :-(<\/h2>\n

It was a shock rumour in the Jazz and Blues scene of Dublin when information was spread last week that JJ Smyth in Aungier Street, Dublin’s only dedicated Jazz and Blues live venue was closing its doors. I have no idea how long they were around, but it is a long long time! And there was live music performed most evening. You didn’t read about it too often in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), because the gigs are usually not free, but at EUR 10 they were still affordable.<\/a><\/p>\n

(Other unrelated rumours have it that a new venue will open soon elsewhere that will surprise with SIGNIFICANTLY higher admission charges that could even make it close to impossible for many to enjoy Jazz and Blues, but more about that at a later stage.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The JJ Smyth rumour unfortunately was confirmed during the week by other people and while there is no official announcement, it seems that JJ Smyth has no further gigs scheduled after 20 November.<\/a><\/p>\n

Groupon bought LivingSocial <\/h2>\n

We all got a bit tired of discount offers it seems because LivingSocial lately was only a shell of its former self, but luckily I still get a small bit of money from commissions if you buy through the links in the Dublin Event Guide.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now it has emerged that Living Social will be bought by its biggest competitor Groupon. It will reduce the number of offers (and the number of unopened e-mails in your Inbox!) I would think, but hopefully there will still be some good an attractive bargains available and since the Dublin Event Guide also advertises Groupon, you can still buy through the links here and help with the bills that I have to pay for sending this newsletter every week.<\/a><\/p>\n

Good-Bye TXFM!<\/h2>\n

The radio station TXFM (formerly Phantom 105.2) has closed its doors and shut down its transmission on Wednesday 26 October after 20 years on air. Many people were very sad about that even if they didn’t listen to the station regularly, but 19,000 people did listen regularly in the last few months.<\/a><\/p>\n

The reason for the shutdown has to do with broadcasting licenses but also with some sinister happenings around the time of the application deadline for the new license. It seems that a number of people and companies were interested in taking over the TXFM broadcasting license when it was up for renewal, but VERY surprisingly nobody submitted an application. Is it possible that other radio station owners put pressure on the interested parties to prevent them from submitting a license application?<\/a><\/p>\n

This exhibition focuses on personal stories of individual Irish men who fought at the Battle of the Somme from July – November 1916 (mainly serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers). Some were killed, others injured and the ones who survived unscathed returned to an Ireland which was radically different following the Easter Rising in April 1916.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition includes photographs, medals, uniforms and other original artefacts – including audio recordings from selected letters and diaries from soldiers describing life in the trenches to loved ones back home. Interview footage from the RT\u00c9 Archives provides further eye-witness testimony.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.<\/a><\/p>\n

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This \u2018mosquito press\u2019 circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/a><\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin in the 1340s was a city struggling to survive. The inhabitants were still reeling in the aftermath of a devastating Scottish Invasion of 1315. Attacks from Gaelic Irish families living in the Wicklow Mountains saw isolated farms and villages in the hinterland burned.

Tales from the Shadows: Gothic Tales<\/h2>\n

This is a free family-friendly shadow puppet show in the Marsh’s Library during the Bram Stoker Festival. It is suitable for all ages (but has limited capacity) with parental guidance advised for under 6s.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be two performances: 14:00+16:00 and the show will run approx. 45 minutes.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Many things lurk in the shadows and go bump in the night: devious devils, vengeful vampires, gloating goblins and sorrowful spectres to name but a few. If you’re brave enough for some scary stories, come watch the forces of light and darkness do battle and listen to our Tales from the Shadows.<\/a><\/p>\n

Through the winter of 1866 Bram Stoker would sit reading in Marsh’s Library, studying books on religion, witchcraft and travel in Eastern Europe. Stoker became a regular reader in Marsh\u2019s visiting frequently during his studies at Trinity College. The Library is a place where it is easy to imagine the world of reality and that of the gothic intertwining. As you make your way down the length of the second gallery it is not hard to believe that the spirit of the founder Archbishop Marsh is watching you from the bays, as he searches for a note his niece left him when she eloped. Just a few years after Stoker\u2019s visits an Egyptian mummy was found in the Library (appearing again decades later missing its head and right hand\u2026). Who knows what else may lurk among the bays?”<\/a><\/p>\n

Marsh’s Library will be open from 10:00 to 17:00 and admission will be free on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October during the Bram Stoker Festival. Even if you can’t get into the shadow puppet show, there will be other activities: a selfie station, an exhibition of comic book images telling a few of the scarier stories from the library’s past, and writing with quill pens. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes both days.<\/a><\/div>\n

Last night the time went back one hour when our clocks changed back to “Winter Time” or what is actually “Standard Time”. The good news is that you got an hour extra sleep, but the price we have to pay is a MUCH earlier evening from now on.<\/a><\/p>\n

Did you change your clocks? Don’t touch your smart phone or computer! They should look after the change themselves, but other clocks in your house or apartment might need to be adjusted. You want to turn the time BACK by one hour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Marathon 2016<\/h2>\n

The SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon is happening every year on the October Bank Holiday weekend. But this year things are a little different because it is on the Sunday not on the Monday as in previous years! So don’t get the day wrong! It also will be the biggest ever Dublin City Marathon with nearly 20,000 participants who plan to run, jog, walk or crawl the 42km.<\/a><\/p>\n

Start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the Finish line is at Merrion Square.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is not a free event and since it is fully booked, you can’t sign up for it anymore, but you can cheer on the runners for free. There are a few cheering zones marked in on the maps at http:\/\/sseairtricitydublinmarathon.ie\/coursestart-finish\/<\/a> but in the end, you can really see and support the runners at any spot along the route.<\/p>\n

The marathon will go from Fitzwilliam Square towards Christchurch then to Phoenix Park until Castleknock. Then back via Chapelizod to Inchicore. Then Dolphins Barn out to Walkinstown and then back via Kimmage, Templeogue, Terenure and Milltown. Now another loop towards UCD, Stillorgan Road, Nutley Lane and then the home stretch via Merrion Road, Northumberland Road to Merrion Square.<\/a><\/p>\n

The race starts at 09:00 and the walkers will be on the course until around 16:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

As you can imagine, there will be wide ranging road closures, some from 04:00 on Sunday morning until 19:30. Avoiding the City Centre on Sunday is probably a good idea. Some information about road closures is here http:\/\/sseairtricitydublinmarathon.ie\/traffic-information\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Because of the Dublin City Marathon there will be NO Magazine Fort Tours today, but there is good news!! The tours will continue over the winter months!!! From next week the will only be on Sundays, not on Fridays anymore, but it is great that they will continue!! I still haven’t made it to the Magazine Fort! :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/p>\n

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/a><\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The parade starts in Moore Street, then goes to Henry Street, Mary Street, Wolfe Tone Street, Parnell Street, Capel Street, Little Britain Street and it ends in Halston Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be super-sized mythical figures, fire, light and music and the theme of the parade “Sleep No More” describes a restless ballad, a dark delirious and delicious waltz between love and loss.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is an extremely stubborn myth in Ireland that Winter starts on 01 November. Primary teachers were and are still (!!) teaching it, despite Met Eireann’s repeated attempts to correct this misinformation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some think that Samhain means the “start of winter”, but it doesn’t! It possibly means the “end of summer” and then the other wrong interpretation is not far, but “start of winter” is wrong. The Celts started their “summer” on 01 May, but they lived by a completely different calendar. The year was divided in a dark half of the year from 01 November and the light half started on 01 May. They also thought that the day starts at sunset, so another sign that they just lived by a different clock and calendar.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you live like the Celts, where the year starts on 01 November and the day starts at sunset, then for you, 01 November is a good day to start the summer. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

If, however, you have adjusted to a modern calendar – unlike the primary teachers in Ireland!? – then the (meteorological) start of winter is on 01 December as Met Eireann confirms to us. And the astronomical start of winter is on 21 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

So have a great autumn day today and don’t worry about winter for another 30 days.<\/a><\/div>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino (closed from November-March)
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Br\u00fa na B\u00f3inne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow<\/p>\n

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. There is a high risk that the Free Wednesday will be restricted further in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.<\/a><\/p>\n

8th Amendment – Avoidance at all cost?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 8th Amendment to the Irish Constitution guarantees the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn and makes abortion illegal, but also puts doctors in a very tricky situation if they expect that they can only safe the life of one of the two in disastrous circumstances. The clause was added to the Irish constitution after a referendum in 1983 and many people think that a lot has happened in these 33 years and that the 8th amendment should be repealed (deleted from the constitution.<\/a><\/p>\n

The supporters of the clause are not overly interested in a referendum because there is the possibility that the opponents will win the referendum. The opponents want to have a referendum as soon as possible to stop the odd situation that women need to travel to the UK to get an abortion that is illegal in Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

So how could we find out what the majority of citizens in Ireland really wants? Let me think? Hmmmm?? Maybe put the head in the sand and pretend that there is no issue? – That seems to be the government’s approach once again! Enda Kenny and his gang are not the most decisive crowd at best of times.<\/a><\/p>\n

In a true democracy, you would give the citizens a chance to voice their opinion and you would run a referendum if there is evidence that the public opinion could have changed drastically. There is no guarantee that the 8th amendment will be repealed if a referendum happens, but at least we would know then.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week the alliance of Anti Austerity Alliance and People Before Profit (AAA-PBP) has asked the government to run a referendum, but that was rejected and the government explains that in the usual way and I will paraphrase VERY VERY freely here: <\/a><\/p>\n

“We will not ask for the real opinion of the people because we have put in place an artificial structure of a Citizens Assembly that will allow us to delay any decision as long as possible. We gave them loads ot time until half way through 2017 and we hope that they will take that time. Then this Citizen Assembly will come back to us with an opinion. We secretly hope that they will say that no referendum is needed, because then we can blame them. But if they tell us we should hold a referendum, then we will first need to discuss that and at some time later vote on it. Because once the Citizen Assembly comes back with an opinion we will first give that opinion to a Special Oireachtas Committee as this will give us a chance to delay the process further. That Special Oireachtas Committee will be also given six months to decide. So it will be well over a year before we even think about a referendum and we hope that the Irish citizens will have forgotten by then! If the Special Oireachtas Committee ALSO says we should have a referendum then we will CONSIDER to have one and will schedule it for as far away from today as we can. because we are extremely afraid of the outcome and hope that we have won the next election by then so that that referendum will not screw our chances. All in all, we don’t care about the opinion of the Irish Citizens anyway. We only care about our position in power and to maintain that we will do whatever possible to block and delay anything that interfere with our power in the slightest way.”<\/a><\/p>\n

So with that in mind – and I stress that this is MY interpretation of the situation, but it is based on the government’s official statement as you can find it through this Tweet<\/a> – there won’t be a referendum for the next 2.5 – 3 years AT LEAST!<\/p>\n

In the last 33 years, the opinion in large parts of the population certainly has changed and they have a right to ask for a new vote. Keep in mind that neither side has a guarantee that they will win or lose and that’s not what this opinion here is about. Sure I have an opinion about the 8th amendment, but my opinion is so irrelevant (I am not even allowed to vote in a referendum!) that I just want to focus on the undemocratic-ness of the government’s decision.<\/a><\/p>\n

We don’t need a Citizens Assembly or a Special Oireachtas Committee! We have clear evidence that there is a ground swell that could indicate that the opinion has changed. That should be enough to ask for the opinion again!<\/a><\/p>\n
