Hi all!<\/p>\n

This week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is earlier than usual and I hope I won’t freak you out with that! :-) The explanation is simple: I will be at a training course this week and therefore already started on Tuesday working on this edition. You are probably wondering why I am not doing that every week? Well, if I wanted to do nothing else during the week than Dublin Event Guide, then I would start that early OR if I didn’t need a day job to pay for the rent. But as long as I have not found a super generous sponsor yet who will make it unnecessary for me to have a day job, I will have to juggle the two things.<\/p>\n

Golden Discs coming back to Henry Street<\/h2>\n

I didn’t even realise that they are still alive, but after 7 years absence, Golden Discs, the music and entertainment retailer is moving back into Henry Street. They will be at 18 Henry Street, which ironically is the former HMV shop. Golden Discs was founded in 1962, got into trouble in 2009, but made it out of examinership and seems to do ok at the moment, but with all online music sources, music retailers don’t have it easy anymore.<\/p>\n

The Riptide Movement will be in the new Henry Street shop for the opening on Thursday 27 October from 18:00 and they will play a gig in the shop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Drive in Cinema in Dublin<\/h2>\n

Retro Movies are bringing a Drive in Cinema to the outskirts of South Dublin. They will show movies on the “world’s biggest outdoor LED movie screen” at Halloween and in the middle of December for Christmas.<\/p>\n

The screen is big but the car park in Cherrywood Business Park doesn’t seem to be that huge: Only 150 tickets are available. They cost EUR 26 (+ fees) for a 5 seater car.<\/p>\n

It looks pretty and is well done. The poblem starts when you move away from what it apparrently is to what it is meant to be, because the description says:<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.<\/p>\n

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This \u2018mosquito press\u2019 circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/p>\n

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mathsweek 2016 is running from 15-23 October this year and there are lots of free events taking place.<\/p>\n

The first challenge is, though, to find the suitable events for you, because the website does make life more difficult than it should. You can select “Events for the General Public”, but that covers events in the whole of Ireland. So I would like “Events in Dublin” that are for the General Public, but there is no way to combine two searches. The “Events in Dublin” also contain all events for kids.<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/p>\n

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Samhain in Marlay Park – Wrist bands required!<\/h2>\n

The Haunted Forest Walk in Marly Park is happening again this year (but no fireworks). It will be on Sunday 30 October between 15:30 and 20:30 and is a short 1.7 km spooky walk for families.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but only if you have a wristband for every family member, Wristbands will be given out at the Marlay Park Market on Saturday 22 October and on Saturday 29 October from 08:00 each day. You can get a max of 6 per family and half of the wristbands will be given out on each of the Saturdays.<\/p>\n

If you want to bring your kids to the haunted forest walk, make sure that you get the wristbands in time!<\/p>\n

Gaeltacht not viable!? Is that really a surprise?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a foreigner, I don’t speak Irish and have never learned it in school. I did make an attempt many years ago to learn it and bought a book and a few cassette tapes (it is THAT long ago!), but I don’t think I made it beyond the first lesson.<\/p>\n

Why did I want to learn it? Well, if you move to a country where there is a different language than your own, you at least make an attempt and in addition there is this romanticised idea that it will come in handy somewhere.<\/p>\n

But then you realise that ONLY English is needed in Ireland and that apart from some politically inspired publications, there is not even a proper newspaper available in Irish, which is a clear indication to me that the language has been given up.<\/p>\n

Is it a terrible thing to give up language that is not useful anymore? Not at all! Otherwise we would all talk in Shakespearian English. Languages change and move, disappear and appear and even if there is history of a language, it does not mean that it HAS to be kept alive. On the other hand, there is NOTHING wrong with keeping it alive if there is sufficient interest and if people want to use it.<\/p>\n

The “Oireachtas Standing Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands” was now told last Wednesday by Dr Brian \u00d3 Curn\u00e1in from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies that the number of Irish speakers is decreasing, that young people’s competence in the language even in the Gaeltacht is declining and that the Gaeltacht in its current state is not viable.<\/p>\n

This has been reported by RTE.ie here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It can’t really come as a surprise! Money is spent on Gaeltacht and on Irish language initiatives and the forced language teaching in Irish schools is still in place. But all this seems (to a non-involved observer) more like state-prescribed or forced programmes and not at all like genuine enthusiasm for the Irish language.<\/p>\n

It seems that the language enthusiasm in Wales (for Welsh) is much bigger than in Ireland (for Gaelic). And considering that Welsh only became official language of Wales in 2011, that is some achievement. I am not sure what exactly was done in Wales to get there, but the system used in Ireland is clearly failing, so now the strategy needs to be changed OR maybe it should be considered to let Irish die?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
