Here is your newest Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). It is late again, I know! :-( But the process of creating it is changing from this week. In small steps only, so don’t expect much of a change. But there is a change and it will hopefully result in a early delivery soon. <\/p>\n

I will publish this week’s Dublin Event Guide again in two stages: First I will update the smartphone app and the website, then I will add more events and once all is completed, the e-mail will be sent to you. <\/p>\n

Free “Start to Write” Class for 10 Dublin Event Guide Readers!<\/h2>\n

For the last 4 years, Yvonne Cullen has been facilitating highly successful weekday and Saturday writing classes in the National Library\u2019s Caf\u00e9 Joly and we ran a number of competitions for her courses over the last few years. Today I am telling you about her winter schedule, but there is also a chance for you to win a class with her, so keep reading!<\/a><\/p>\n

Yvonne\u2019s new term of WINTER classes at the library starts on Sat 5 November. There will be a START TO WRITE course on Saturday mornings at 11:00, weekly for 10 weeks. Warning for Online Shoppers: Shops that skim your Credit Card details<\/h2>\n

The dutch security researcher Willem de Groot (gwillem) has checked 255,000 online shops and found that nearly 6000 of them have a piece of malware (software that is installed by third party to do bad things, similar to virus software) installed that – unbeknownst to the shop owner – will send the credit card information of shoppers to criminals. The process is called “Skimming” and it seems that many shop owners don’t know how to deal with it, even if they are told.<\/a><\/p>\n

Artist Pamela de Br\u00ed cycled the entire route of the old Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) – 1000km – visiting most of the stations on this old network. She spoke to locals and gathered stories, memories, folklore and local history and recorded everything in photographs and notebooks.<\/a><\/p>\n

I find art sometimes challenging. It’s not that I don’t get it, but I ask the question WHY? and there is often no answer.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Brute Clues show in the Project Arts centre is one of those WHY? art installations. The three artists Tom Watt, Tanad Williams and Andreas Kindler von Knobloch have built what I would describe as a “platform with stairs to it” that looks very much like a stage. It looks pretty and is well done. The poblem starts when you move away from what it apparrently is to what it is meant to be, because the description says:<\/a><\/p>\n

“The artists Tom Watt, Tanad Williams and Andreas Kindler von Knobloch have created an artwork drawing on their mutual interest in architecture – built interruptions in the landscape and industry.
Their structure \u2013 which they describe as \u2018not a stage, not a dam, not a platform, and not an excavation\u2019 – can be walked on, rested on, climbed, or viewed from afar.
With roles designated for the various materials that make up Brute Clues, the limitations and rules surrounding both the materials and the institution are embedded in its structure.”<\/p>\n

So, the stage (or platform) is NOT a stage or platform and now you have lost me again. Pity! I was sooo close! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.<\/a><\/p>\n

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This \u2018mosquito press\u2019 circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.<\/a><\/p>\n

Little Stories, Little Prints – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/a><\/p>\n

The yearly Open House Dublin event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and it gives you an opportunity to visit buildings that you normally would never get access to on a guided tour that focuses on the architecture of the building and the reasons behind why it was build the way it is.<\/a><\/p>\n

Open House Dublin starts on Friday, but the main days are Saturday and Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the venues gave out tickets on a lottery basis only and the tickets are all given out now. Many other locations are running tours throughout the day and while you might have to queue for a little you will get in – unless you arrive too late in the day. Look for the white Open House ballons!<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly recommend this event and over the years, I have had the opportunity to see Busaras, Liberty Hall, Department of Foreign Affairs, Lighthouse Commission in Dun Laoghaire, Criminal Court of Justice, Central Bank and many more fascinating buildings and I can definitely say that I since see these buildings with totally different eyes!<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly recommend this event, it is really great to get a chance to explore some of Dublin’s (iconic) buildings and to hear why the architects did what they did.<\/a><\/div>\n

Renowned Riverdance producer and director John McColgan recently travelled with Tr\u00f3caire to Gaza and the West Bank to document the lives of people living a daily reality of military occupation and economic blockade. \u2018This Is Palestine\u2019 is a powerful exhibition of John\u2019s photographs from that trip and features striking portraits of people who have lost family members, homes and land due to ongoing conflict and military occupation.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/a><\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

Mathsweek 2016 is running from 15-23 October this year and there are lots of free events taking place.<\/a><\/p>\n

The first challenge is, though, to find the suitable events for you, because the website does make life more difficult than it should. You can select “Events for the General Public”, but that covers events in the whole of Ireland. So I would like “Events in Dublin” that are for the General Public, but there is no way to combine two searches. The “Events in Dublin” also contain all events for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the last weekend of the Sculpture in Context exhibition It will close on Friday and if you are working throughout the week, this is your last chance to see it:<\/a><\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition opened on 08 Sept and will run until 21 October. <\/a><\/div>\n

The yearly Open House Dublin event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and it gives you an opportunity to visit buildings that you normally would never get access to on a guided tour that focuses on the architecture of the building and the reasons behind why it was build the way it is.<\/a><\/p>\n

Open House Dublin starts on Friday, but the main days are Saturday and Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the venues gave out tickets on a lottery basis only and the tickets are all given out now. Many other locations are running tours throughout the day and while you might have to queue for a little you will get in – unless you arrive too late in the day. Look for the white Open House ballons!<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly recommend this event and over the years, I have had the opportunity to see Busaras, Liberty Hall, Department of Foreign Affairs, Lighthouse Commission in Dun Laoghaire, Criminal Court of Justice, Central Bank and many more fascinating buildings and I can definitely say that I since see these buildings with totally different eyes!<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly recommend this event, it is really great to get a chance to explore some of Dublin’s (iconic) buildings and to hear why the architects did what they did.<\/a><\/div>\n

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.<\/a><\/p>\n

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

James Goodman (1828\u20131896) from Dingle, Co. Kerry, was a canon of the Church of Ireland and Professor of Irish in Trinity College Dublin and he compiled an outstanding Irish traditional music manuscript collection containing more than 2,300 tunes. <\/a><\/p>\n

To mark the occasion of the reprint of Tunes of the Munster Pipers Volume 1 and the announcement of the ITMA\/TCD Goodman Digital Project, you are invited to an afternoon (14:00-16:00) of short presentations about Canon James Goodman and his collection. Guest speakers will be Lisa Shields (co-editor of Tunes of the Munster Pipers Volume 2), Roy Stanley (Music Librarian, TCD), Nicholas Carolan (Director Emeritus ITMA) and Emer Mayock (member of the Goodman Trio).<\/a><\/p>\n

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour<\/h2>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/p>\n

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.<\/a><\/div>\n

What happens when a brave shrimp decides to walk forward instead of backwards? And when a cannon starts shooting bells instead of bombs? Simona Roveda and Debora Danti, experts in children\u2019s theatre, will present some of the most amusing of Rodari\u2019s stories through theatrical readings. The Big Energy Hack – Hackathon<\/h2>\n

The Big Energy Hack is a 2.5 day Hackathon event from Friday until Sunday for everybody that is interested in creating innovative customer solutions for electricity customers. The organisers say: “We\u2019re looking for great people with great ideas. Entrepreneurs, IT and technology specialists, engineers, marketers, designers, forward thinkers ?are all welcome to apply.”<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be three challenges from which you can choose one, then you have 48 hours and you are put in a team with other people to create a creative and innovative solution for the problem.<\/a><\/p>\n

The event is organised by ESB and will take place in the Dog Patch Labs. Food and drinks and mentorship will be provided. It all starts on Friday at 17:00 and then again on Saturday at 08:00 (until 22:00) and Sunday at 08:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

The three challenges are:<\/a><\/p>\n

1) Empower Customers to be more Energy Efficient in their Homes
2) Enhance the ecar Driving Experience
3) Improve the Reliability and Quality of the Electricity Supply<\/p>\n

I wasn’t able to find any information about how the teams are put together and how big the teams will be. But the prizes for the teams are EUR 5000 for the best creation or concept, EUR 3000 for the next and the third prize is EUR 2000. But more than the prizes, the weekend will be full of challenges, teamwork and learnings.<\/a><\/p>\n

There is an admission charge of EUR 20 to ensure that you come to the event and not just sign up with no intention to come, but you will get the money back on the day, so it is a free event!<\/a><\/p>\n

Borderland is a short documentary that explores the Syrian refugee crisis along Europe\u2019s borders, the greatest mass migration since World War II.<\/a><\/p>\n

The film features interviews with refugees, volunteers, Colm O’Gorman of Amnesty International, Sue Conlan formerly of The Irish Refugee Council and Eva Schloss, holocaust survivor and stepsister of Anne Frank. The film is produced and directed by two Dublin-based filmmakers, Paul Webster and Conor Maguire.<\/a><\/p>\n

A post-screening conversation with Paul, Conor, Sue Conlon and Colm O’Gorman hosted by Dil Wickremasinghe (Newstalk) will discuss the documentary and the refugee crisis.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Haunted Forest Walk in Marly Park is happening again this year (but no fireworks). It will be on Sunday 30 October between 15:30 and 20:30 and is a short 1.7 km spooky walk for families.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but only if you have a wristband for every family member, Wristbands will be given out at the Marlay Park Market on Saturday 22 October and on Saturday 29 October from 08:00 each day. You can get a max of 6 per family and half of the wristbands will be given out on each of the Saturdays.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you want to bring your kids to the haunted forest walk, make sure that you get the wristbands in time! <\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. It is “country” not “jurisdiction”!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Language is a an odd thing! There seems to a sheep effect sometimes when someone uses a term that we think we SHOULD use. Years ago it was the term “non-national”. It was used initially in a misguided effort to be more inclusive by avoiding words like “foreigner” or “alien”. Not the term “non-national” made no sense whatsoever because nearly all “non-nationals” were very much nationals, just not nationals of Ireland, but of other countries. Oddly “non-nationals” was usually only used for non-Irish-nationals from outside the EU. So, it seems we had different classes of “non-nationals”. Luckily the term is hardly used anymore, which is a good thing. <\/a><\/p>\n

But there are many other words that are used in odd circumstances. “Jurisdiction” is one of them!<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week, the Irish Independent wrote<\/a> “A slump in Sterling against the euro prompted hordes of shoppers in this jurisdiction to head across the Border for their pre-Christmas shopping.”<\/p>\n

And it quoted<\/a> Ash Ireland chairman Dr Patrick Doorley, who said “[…] There are many examples of jurisdictions where tobacco price has been increased for health reasons and smuggling simultaneously tackled and reduced – such as Australia, New Zealand and Spain.”<\/p>\n

Why is the word “jurisdiction” used in this case and not the word “country”. Every country is a different jurisdiction by definition of sovereignty. The only difference is where a big country, e.g. the USA, can have different laws in different parts (states). In Ireland we don’t have different laws in different parts of the country, so the use of “jurisdiction” makes absolutely no sense.<\/a><\/p>\n

And just in case “jurisdiction” is used by some to avoid having to call Northern Ireland a different country than the Republic of Ireland: No matter what your opinion is about the political divisions on this island in the future, currently the Republic of Ireland is a completely different country than Northern Ireland and until that changes, the hordes of shoppers in this COUNTRY headed across the border (there is a big hint in this word!!).<\/a><\/div>\n
