This week is probably the quietest week in the whole summer. But quiet means still nearly 200 free events!! So, why quiet? Well, there are only very few high profile\/headline events happening this week. But I hear the weather will be good. So, make the most of it, it might be the last “warm” weekend for a while. :-O<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide is currently published in two stages. The first stage is an update on the website and the smartphone app. More events will be added after that and the smartphone app will be updated continually. When all events are entered the second stage is to send the e-mail to all subscribers.<\/p>\n

This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide and if there are any events missing now, then people did a good job hiding them! :-)<\/p>\n

Music Matters is a not-for-profit organisation that sets up inclusive community choirs and also choirs for people with dementia, older people, people with disabilities and with the LGBT community. On Friday they are hosting a fundraising concert at which a selection of songs from stage and screens will be sung by Music Matters choirs and the Quincy Choral Society from Massachussetts (USA). Jameson Distillery Visitor Centre closing for six month for 11mio renovation<\/h2>\n

The “Old Jameson Distillery”, Jameson’s visitor centre at Smithfield Square, will close at the end of this month for a a six (!!) month long renovation process that will cost 11mio. Sounds like a HUGE job and I would expect that after spending so much money, it will have no similarity with the current visitor centre. RTE News has some more details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

New Speed Limits in Dublin? It will affect you even if you don’t drive!<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin City wants to introduce a speed limit of 30 km\/h in the whole City Centre between the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal and because that speed limit will also force buses and taxis to crawl along with a speed that is slower than many bicycles go, this will also affect you. And if the “between the canals” limit will go ahead, then Dublin City wants to extend the area further into other parts of Dublin from 2017.<\/p>\n

I am totally in favour of a rigorous speed limit near schools (while kids are coming and going, not around the clock!) and in areas with a large amount of pedestrians, but there are MANY other areas where it absolutely does NOT make sense. The AA calls it “absurd”<\/a>, but importantly is very much in favour of 30 km\/h zones if in the right areas.<\/p>\n

The main proponent of the 30 km\/h speed limit is Green Party councillor Ciaran Cuffe, who was also the loudest anti-busking campaigner in Dublin City Council. The argument of the pro 30km\/h side is that it increases the chance of survival for a pedestrian hit by a car significantly, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to find ANY statistics about how many accidents happen between cars and pedestrians in the City Centre every year and if any of them ended with the death of a pedestrian.<\/p>\n

No Sand Sculptures at Dublin Castle in 2016 :-(<\/h2>\n

A huge summer attraction in Dublin is not happening in 2016: The yearly sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle attracted thousands of visitors every year for many years, but I hadn’t heard anything about it for 2016. When I enquired at Dublin Castle I found out that there won’t be any Sand Sculptures this year! :-(<\/p>\n

The Sand Sculptures in Dublin Castle have been a great piece of Summer entertainment for young and old since 2002 (!!!) and I will try to find out what happened this year, so watch this space.<\/p>\n

In previous years the artists Daniel Doyle, Niall Magee and Alan Magee from the art collaborative Duthain Dealbh\/Fleeting Sculpture created the most amazing sand sculptures and there are many pictures on the Internet that show them, just search for “Sand Sculptures Dublin Castle”. They also created art made of sand, snow, ice and fire all over the world, but their website at http:\/\/www.fleetingsculpture.com\/<\/a> is not working at the moment.<\/p>\n

At least one member of Fleeting Sculpture is still actively doing sand sculptures in Ireland: Daniel Doyle has been announced by Cashel Arts Festival as a contributor to their festival in September.<\/p>\n

Since Dublin Castle is managed by the Office of Public Work (OPW) and the OPW has reduced their generosity somewhat in recent months (exemplified by the removal of Kilmainham Gaol from the list of heritage sites for the monthly “Free Wednesday” event), there could be a financial reason behind this development, but at this stage, this is purely speculation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Summer of Heritage 2016 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

The Summer of Heritage 2016 programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, is a series of free guided tours running for 10 weeks from 27 June – 04 September. There will be 29 events at locations like Dalkey Castle, Cabinteely House, National Maritime Museum, Monkstown Castle, Deansgrange Cemetery, Blackrock, Milltown, The Metals, Seapoint Martello Tower, Dun Laoghaire, Killiney Hill and there will also be a Maeve Binchy walking tour, a 1916 Graves tour of Deansgrange Cemetery, a 1916 Social History tour of D\u00fan Laoghaire and a 1916 Exhibition in Marlay House.<\/p>\n

Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.<\/p>\n

Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.<\/p>\n

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This \u2018mosquito press\u2019 circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

A Fair Land is a project in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s Courtyard where a pre-1916 village is built and will operate from 12-28 August.<\/p>\n

This project will develop a system for living derived from basic and simple resources used in a creative way. Visitors will have opportunities to eat, make, think or trade and through that process to learn, copy, assimilate and teach. With a focus on creating objects that are useful, desirable and achievable, A Fair Land will present an active and tangible representation of the place of creativity in society, creating a space for families, friends and strangers to gather, get involved, and experience alternative perspectives on living. A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 16 July to 20 August 2015.<\/p>\n

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.<\/p>\n

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Do you remember “Shakespeare in the Park”? The great team at Fortune’s Fool Production originally started in Ranelagh Gardens, then they moved to Iveagh Gardens and this year all their work has been recognised and they went on a nationwide tour first and now are back in Dublin for what I would cheekily call, the main event. The Gardens of Dublin Castle (near Chester Beatty Library) is the location this year and because of the different locations chosen, the event was renamed to “Shakespeare at Irish Monuments”.<\/p>\n

The play is “Measure for Measure”, a lesser known play by Shakespeare, so to prepare yourself, have a read of the story behind the play here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I went to the play last Sunday and I strongly recommend it. But MAKE SURE that you read at least the “Synopsis” on the Wikipedia Page that I link above. Shakespeare likes complication and uses lots of sub plots, so you get a LOT more out of the play when you understand what is happening. :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Every year in August, the Perseid Meteor showers will show up when the Earth passes through the long trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. And this year, they are promised to be extra spectacular.<\/p>\n

According to NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke, the Perseids will be in “outburst” in 2016, which means they’ll appear at double the usual rates: “This year, instead of seeing about 80 Perseids per hour, the rate could top 150 and even approach 200 meteors per hour,”<\/p>\n

The metoer showers will be visible from 04-19 August and the peak is on 11\/12 August. The best time to watch it is after 01:00 when the moon has set and to see it you need a clear sky. The peak night didn’t present a clear sky, so maybe you are luckier over the weekend. There might be a few less meteors per hour, but that’ll do as well. ;-)<\/p>\n

The advise is: “Go to a dark area, in the suburbs or countryside and prepare to sit outside for a few hours. It takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark and the longer you wait outside, the more you’ll see. A rate of 150 meteors per hour, for instance, means two to three meteors per minute, including faint streaks along with bright, fireball-generating ones.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Ironman 70.3 is really a Half Ironman with 1.9km of a swim, 90km of a bike ride and 21.1 km of a run. All together that is 113km, which translates into 70.3 miles and that is where the name comes from.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine it is not mentioned here because you can take part for free, but because you can watch it and support the athletes. The best place to support them is probably where the competition starts, in Dun Laoghaire, or where it ends in Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n

The swim starts at 06:50 and the last participant is expected in Phoenix Park at 16:20. The website is a pain to use and doesn’t have a good map for the route unless you download the full 38 page Athletes Guide here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I gathered some of the details for you here: Start is at Sandycove, south of Dun Laoghaire and Transition from Swim to Bike is on Newtownsmith Green in Dun Laoghaire. Then the route goes via Blackrock, Booterstown to Irishtown. Then along the Liffey to Heuston Station. Onwards to Lucan, then Maynooth, Kilcock and back to Dunboyne, Clonsilla, Castleknock and to Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n

At the Papal Cross in Phoenix Park is the transition from Bike to Run and the 21km run is three loops on a course in Phoenix Park and the race finish is on Chesterfield Avenue in Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n

There will be extensive road closures due to this event and Phoenix Park is more or less closed. The LONG list of roead closures is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Sunday Tour at the Magazine Fort has been cancelled due to the Ironman event causing mayhem in Phoenix Park!!<\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/p>\n

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.<\/p>\n

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience<\/p>\n

Do you remember “Shakespeare in the Park”? The great team at Fortune’s Fool Production originally started in Ranelagh Gardens, then they moved to Iveagh Gardens and this year all their work has been recognised and they went on a nationwide tour first and now are back in Dublin for what I would cheekily call, the main event. The Gardens of Dublin Castle (near Chester Beatty Library) is the location this year and because of the different locations chosen, the event was renamed to “Shakespeare at Irish Monuments”.<\/p>\n

The play is “Measure for Measure”, a lesser known play by Shakespeare, so to prepare yourself, have a read of the story behind the play here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The performances at Dublin Castle are

\n+ Weekends: 6, 7, 13, 14 August at 15:00<\/p>\n

Admission is free and no booking is required. Chairs are not provided, so bring a blanket or similar. There will be no roof and the play will go ahead in light rain…but could be cancelled in heavy rain. Check the Facebook Page below for any updates.<\/p>\n

I went to the play last Sunday and I strongly recommend it. But MAKE SURE that you read at least the “Synopsis” on the Wikipedia Page that I link above. Shakespeare likes complication and uses lots of sub plots, so you get a LOT more out of the play when you understand what is happening. :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Every year in August, the Perseid Meteor showers will show up when the Earth passes through the long trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. And this year, they are promised to be extra spectacular.<\/p>\n

According to NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke, the Perseids will be in “outburst” in 2016, which means they’ll appear at double the usual rates: “This year, instead of seeing about 80 Perseids per hour, the rate could top 150 and even approach 200 meteors per hour,”<\/p>\n

The metoer showers will be visible from 04-19 August and the peak is on 11\/12 August. The best time to watch it is after 01:00 when the moon has set and to see it you need a clear sky. The peak night didn’t present a clear sky, so maybe you are luckier over the weekend. There might be a few less meteors per hour, but that’ll do as well. ;-)<\/p>\n

The advise is: “Go to a dark area, in the suburbs or countryside and prepare to sit outside for a few hours. It takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark and the longer you wait outside, the more you’ll see. A rate of 150 meteors per hour, for instance, means two to three meteors per minute, including faint streaks along with bright, fireball-generating ones.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/p>\n

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/p>\n

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A Fair Land is a project in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s Courtyard where a pre-1916 village is built and will operate from 12-28 August.<\/p>\n

This project will develop a system for living derived from basic and simple resources used in a creative way. Visitors will have opportunities to eat, make, think or trade and through that process to learn, copy, assimilate and teach. With a focus on creating objects that are useful, desirable and achievable, A Fair Land will present an active and tangible representation of the place of creativity in society, creating a space for families, friends and strangers to gather, get involved, and experience alternative perspectives on living. The National Heritage Week is around the corner! It is a week long festival that will build awareness and education about our heritage, its conservation and preservation. There will be more than 2000 events all over Ireland and hundreds of them are in Dublin.<\/p>\n

From guided tours via concerts and talks to Family events, it will be a very busy week for anybody who is interested in Heritage or at least has an open mind. “Freedom of Expression” vs “Discrimination of Women”
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Friday it was announced<\/a> that the Mayor of Cannes has banned the wearing of Burkinis at the beach in Cannes and thinking about that, I discovered a sizeable conflict in my and maybe your thinking!<\/p>\n

I should start with an explanation, Burkinis look like a long-sleeved pyjama and they also have a form of hoodie that covers the head, but does not cover the face. In that respect they differ from Burkas (despite the similar name), which are more like a gown and also cover the face. The head part of a Burkini is more like that of a Hijab. And if all that confuses you, check out this head gear comparison here <\/a>(with pictures).<\/p>\n

Now back to the conflict that I mentioned above. The Cannes Mayor reasoned the ban with “risks of disrupting public order”, which I really don’t get and think is quite far fetched, but my concern is a different one:<\/p>\n

I am all for Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Religion. So (as long as I don’t harm anybody else!!) nobody should be told what they are allowed to believe and what not and everybody should be allowed to express their own opinion (as long as they don’t invite others to harm anybody). To “Freedom of Expression” belongs the freedom to wear whatever clothes I want to wear. With that in mind, muslim women should be allowed to wear Burkinis on the beach if they want to do that.<\/p>\n

But there is a flipside! Religions and rules about clothing based on your religion is usually man made nonsense and I am strictly against the oppression of women that is practised in nearly all religions and is particularly strong in Islam. And being against oppression, I think the oppressors should not get away with their ridiculous rules and we as a open and tolerant society should stop or at least hinder them from oppressing women.<\/p>\n

Can you see the conflict? On one hand, I think women should be allowed to wear what they want, because these clothes rules is only a means to oppress them. So ban Burkas and Hijabs and Burkinis etc. But tolerance means that the woman who WANTS to wear it should be allowed. How can we assess is SHE really wants to wear it or if she obliges because of the threats by her religious leaders?<\/p>\n

I know at least one girl who absolutely wanted to wear a Hijab, because she felt it was showing the appropriate respect to her god. And I also know muslim women who have told me that NOT wearing clothes that cover all bit of skins will expose you to such an imitating lecherous attitude in their countries that they happily wear clothes that are covering as much as possible. Sure they would like to change the attitude of the men in their world, but they don’t see that as feasible in the short term.<\/p>\n

So, what should we do? Band the Burkini to help or allow the Burkini to be tolerant and accepting?<\/p>\n

I know we are not in Cannes (and we don’t have a proper beach), but it is a problem that is already relevant in our society regarding Burkas and Hijabs and Niqabs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
